Genesis 18

Gen 18:1

Blessings given in the path of home duty: shepherds at night (Luk 2:8-20), Moses keeping flock (Exo 3:1,2), David in sheepfolds (Psa 78:70), Gideon threshing (Jdg 6:11,12), Abraham in tent-door (Gen 18:1), and a woman coming to draw water (Joh 4:7,26).

“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it” (Heb 13:2; cp Rom 12:13, 3Jo 1:5,7; 1Ti 3:2). Cp also Lot with strangers (Gen 19:1).

THE LORD: = 3 angels, who speak on His behalf (v 10).

THE GREAT TREES: “Elon”. Rt “strength” or “oak”. The Heb is consistently translated “tree(s)” in NIV, but “plain” in Gen 12:6; 13:18; 14:13; 18:1; Deu 11:30. Cp also Jdg 4:11; 9:6,37; 1Sa 10:3.

HE WAS SITTING AT THE ENTRANCE TO HIS TENT: Abraham sat in door of tent (alone). Lot sat in gate of city: Gen 19:11.

IN THE HEAT OF THE DAY: This is an open manifestation, not a dream of the night.

Gen 18:2

Hospitality: Heb 13:2; Rom 12:13; 1Pe 4:9.

HURRIED (RAN): Eagerness. Abraham’s characteristic haste: Gen 19:27; 22:3.

BOWED LOW TO THE GROUND: Normal form of greeting strangers (Gen 23:7).

Gen 18:3

MY LORD: Not “Yahweh”, but “Adonai”, although supposedly altered by Sopherim (Comp 32). Or, poss plural: “Adonai” = “My lords, with no recognition as yet of their divine origin”. A normal form of greeting (Gen 30:27; 1Sa 20:29).

Gen 18:5

SOMETHING TO EAT: AV: “a morsel of bread” — a very modest description of what proves to be a sumptuous feast (vv 6-8).

REFRESHED: “Comfort ye” (AV) or “stay” (ie strengthen) ye (AV mg).

Gen 18:6

Abraham commanded a very large household, of perh several hundred, but he delighted in personally ministering to these visitors.

Gen 18:7

A “sacrificial” meal!

Gen 18:8

This meal, not proper/kosher according to modern Jewish dietary laws.

“He will eat curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right” (Isa 7:15).

HE STOOD NEAR THEM: In a mediatorial, or servant’s, capacity.

Gen 18:9

A very strange thing, to know the name of the man’s wife!

Vv 9-15: Abraham had not told Sarah of the promised seed, or else she had not believed him. Sarah doubted, but only for a brief moment.

Gen 18:10

Cp 2Ki 4:16: another unusual childbirth.

Gen 18:11

Spiritually, we are like Sarah — past the time and unable to bear “fruit” to our “husband” without divine help.

Gen 18:12

MY MASTER: “My lord” (adon) in AV. This is what Sarah said in her heart, ie, her ordinary attitude: 1Pe 3:6; 1Co 11:3.

Gen 18:14

HARD: Sw “wonderful” in Isa 9:6.

“You do not prove the resources of God until you trust Him for the impossible.”

I WILL RETURN: “I will surely return” (v 10). God was personally involved in this birth, literally so in giving strength and revitalization to this aged couple — just as He is spiritually involved in the calling of each of His sons and daughters by the Word (hence causing them to “born after the Spirit”: Gal 4:29; John 6:44,45).

AT THE APPOINTED TIME: In Gen 18:10 it is “the time of life”, but the question of time is emphasized again in Gen 18:14: “At the TIME APPOINTED…” Not only was Isaac born out of a promise but a promise to be fulfilled at a SET TIME (cp Gen 21:2). This time was first appointed in Gen 17:21 — a year after Yahweh appeared to Abraham with the covenant token of circumcision (Gen 17:1,10,11) — and probably nine months from the visitation of Gen 18.

Gen 18:16

LOOKED DOWN TOWARD SODOM: As Jesus looked toward Jerusalem… Mamre is in a valley close to Hebron; from the heights a little to the east a view of the Dead Sea can be had.

Gen 18:17

Abraham = the Friend of God in 2Ch 20:7; Isa 41:8; Jam 2:23.

Gen 18:20

The sins of Sodom: more than sexual. Also, pride, arrogance, haughtiness, leisure, indifference to poor (Eze 16:49).”It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building” (Luk 17:28). In short, they showed concern only for temporal affairs, material wealth and pleasure.

Gen 18:21

The angels do not have infinite wisdom: ie, they must go down to see for themselves!

THE OUTCRY THAT HAS REACHED ME: Cp cry of Abel’s blood: “Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground” (Gen 4:10), and laborers defrauded of wages (Jam 5:4). Cp also Babylon the Great, whose sins have reached unto heaven (Rev 19:5).

Gen 18:22

THE MEN: They continue to assume the appearance of ordinary men.

BUT ABRAHAM REMAINED STANDING: Reflection and waiting before approaching God.

BEFORE THE LORD: One of the 3 “men” remained behind, while the other 2 went ahead (Gen 19:1). Abraham was prob talking to an angel referred to as “the Lord”. Since there were 3 initially (v 2) and since the plural word “men” is used in v 22 when they went toward Sodom, then apparently one stays behind and becomes a spokesman for the Lord. Refs where an angel = God are Psa 97:7 (cp Heb 1:6); Gen 32:30 (cp Hos 12:3-4); Exod 3:1-6 (cp Act 7:38).

Gen 18:23

Other cities were to be destroyed, but Abraham pleads for Sodom only, because that is where Lot dwelt (Gen 14:12). God allowed Abraham to “barter” without telling him it was wrong. Moses “bargains” with God on several occasions (eg Exod 32:11-14). Gideon also does… a conscious imitation of Abraham’s intercession in Jdg 6:39 (cp Gen 18:32). Notice, however, the humility of Abraham in his bartering: “dust and ashes” (v 27); he pleads with God not to be angry (v 32).

WILL YOU SWEEP AWAY (DESTROY) THE RIGHTEOUS WITH THE WICKED: The lesson of the Flood and Noah, prob learned from Shem?

Gen 18:24

FIFTY: The number of Jubilee and, hence, deliverance (Lev 25:10). “Why not let the feeble light still shine, so long as there is any possibility that another sinner may be called to repentance?”

Gen 18:26

The righteous, as salt of the earth, a preservative: Mat 5:13.

Gen 18:27

SO BOLD (I HAVE TAKEN UPON ME): Astonished at the liberty he has taken.

DUST AND ASHES: Abraham’s estimate of himself (cp Job 14:1,2,7; 1Co 15:45-49; Rom 5:12).

Gen 18:31

“There was abundance of mercy with God, but His servant was limited — he was afraid of overdrawing his account” (CHM 199).

Gen 18:32

TEN: 10 = Lot, wife, 2 married daughters (Gen 19:14), 2 sons-in-law, at least 2 sons (Gen 19:2), and 2 unmarried daughters (Gen 19:12,15,31).

Power of faith and intercession of others: Mat 8:13; 9:32; 15:28; 17:14-18; Luk 8:50; Joh 4:49; Jos 6:17; Gen 7:1; 18:32; 19:12; Act 27:24.

Abraham is now assured, but his faith was to be sorely tested when he rose to see Sodom’s smoke afar off: Gen 19:27,28 (WAbr 81,82).

Genesis Overview

Author: Moses (date of writing: c 1440-1400 BC).

Period: Creation to c 1800 BC.

Title: The Heb title of this book is taken from its opening phrase, Bereshith (“In the beginning…”). The English name is taken from the title given to this book in the Greek Septuagint translation. The Greek word genesis can mean “birth,” “genealogy,” “history of origin,” or “source.” The word “genesis” is also found in the opening phrase of the first book of the New Testament, Matthew, where it means “genealogy” or “history of origin.”

Summary: Genesis is the single most important book of the Bible. It is the beginning and foundation of the Bible, on which everything else is built. Everything revealed in the other books of the Bible has its beginning in the book of Genesis. It is the first book of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. As both the Hebrew and Greek titles suggest, the book of Genesis is a book of beginnings. Genesis and Revelation stand as two end posts bridging the revelation of God to man; the first telling how it all began, the second revealing in symbol how it all will finish. In Genesis we see the beginnings of all that Revelation predicts as the consummation of the Divine purpose in the earth.

For example:

  • Genesis speaks of a natural creation (Gen 1); Revelation of a spiritual creation (Rev 3:14).
  • In Genesis the serpent speaks (Gen 3:1-5); in Revelation it is restrained (Rev 20:2).
  • In Genesis, the curse is imposed (Gen 3:17); in Revelation it is removed (Rev 22:3).
  • In Genesis, sorrow and death make their appearance (Gen 3:16-19); in Revelation they are taken away (Rev 21:4).
  • In Genesis, access to the tree of life is denied (Gen 3:24); in Revelation, access to it is opened (22:7).
  • In Genesis, the first paradise is closed to man (3:23); in Revelation it is opened to him (Rev 21:25).

DIVISIONS OF GENESIS

In addition to the natural separation into two periods of time, the book of Genesis is also divided naturally into twelve sections. With the exception of the first, these natural subject divisions are marked in the Hebrew text by the word “toledoth” (lit, “generations,” or “births”). In the Septuagint, this word is translated with the Greek term “genesis”. The KJV translates the phrase in which “toledoth” appears as “the generations of…” and the NIV uses the expression “the account of…” These divisions act something like the subject headings used in some Bibles — except in this case, they are inspired! The divisions of Genesis are listed below:

  1. Creation — the beginning: Gen 1:1 – 2:3
  2. The history of the heavens and the earth: Gen 2:4 – 4:26
  3. The book of the genealogy of Adam: Gen 5:1 – 6:8
  4. The genealogy of Noah: Gen 6:9 – 9:29
  5. The genealogy of the sons of Noah: Gen 10:1 -11:9
  6. The genealogy of Shem: Gen 11:10-26
  7. The genealogy of Terah (Abraham): Gen 11:27 – 25:11

DIVINE PORTRAITS OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF GENESIS

  1. Adam illustrates human nature ; and what we are we have inherited from him (1Co 15:47,48; Rom 5:12-19).
  2. Cain illustrates the carnal mind, at enmity with God and with a religion of its own (Gen 4:1-16; 1Jo 3:12; Jud 1:11).
  3. Abel illustrates the spiritual mind, which discerns the value of shed blood (Gen 4:4; Heb 9:22; 11:4).
  4. Enoch illustrates communion with God that leads to separation from the world, and typifies believers caught away from the great tribulation (Gen 5:21-24; Heb 11:5,6; Jud 1:14,15).

Theory of continuous generations beginning many 1,000s of years ago (ie evolution) can be answered by demonstrating that progressive increases would make present projected world population much greater than it actually is.

Genesis 1

Gen 1:1

BEGINNING: The Heb (reshith) sig a period of unlimited duration — ie not at a single point approx 6,000 years ago! That is, of Adam’s era. “Which existed ages before!” Were there previous creations?

GOD: Elohim. “Out of whom” (ie God) was all: Rom 11:36; 1Co 8:6. Direct creation: Isa 52:5; 45:18; Psa 148:5.

CREATED: Bara. Singular verb, but plural subject. Psa 51:12: All things created by God’s spirit. Psa 104:30: “Thou renewest the face of the earth.” “Bara” = to rearrange, remold, sig from some material (ie created man out of dust). The earth was created out of God’s basic energy (Phan 46,47). In future again, God will be “all in all” (1Co 15:28). See Elp 10-12; Trial 58-71. Adam was told to “be fruitful… replenish (refill) the earth” (Gen 1:28), same as told to Noah (Gen 9:1). Exact meaning to be determined by context and usage.

THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH: A parable of the new spiritual “creation”, in Christ: Isa 65; Rev 21.

Gen 1:2

WAS: Or “became”.

FORMLESS AND EMPTY: Heb “tohu-bohu”. “Without form and void” (AV). Used together in Isa 34:11; Jer 4:23. “Without hope (formless) and without God (empty)”: Eph 2:12. (Yet God did not create it with this in mind; He created it to be inhabited: Isa 45:7,8 — ie, eternally: to bring forth “salvation”!)

DEEP: Called “the abyss” in Job 35:9. The Heb is “tehom”: a cognate with Akkadian Tiamat, the name of the chaos monster supposedly overcome by Marduk in connection with the creation: See Lesson, Leviathan (the “Creation”).

SPIRIT OF GOD: Heb “ruach Elohim”: “The spirit strength of the Mighty Ones”. “Spirit” = the “wisdom” of Pro 8:22-26.

WAS HOVERING: “Moved” (AV). Like a mother bird brooding over her young: Deu 32:11 (cp Exo 19:4). The words portray the energy-giving presence of God — wrapping, protecting, and caressing the chaos of the unfinished earth as He prepared to complete His creation.

“What a blessing to know that our Heavenly Father can take total chaos and create out of it, a functional, dynamic, God-glorifying creation.

Your personal life might, at this point in time, resemble the state of things that existed right here at the beginning of time on this planet… dark, turbulent, sad, dysfunctional and ‘lifeless’.

But the powerful creative words of our Loving Heavenly Father can change all that, even as they changed the face of this globe in just six days, 6,000 years ago.

SEPARATED (DIVIDED) THE LIGHT FROM THE DARKNESS: Alt rend Heb “between the light and between the darkness”: v 18. “What fellowship between?” (2Co 6:14). No sooner is there a good thing in the world, than a division is necessary. Light and darkness have no communion; God has divided them, let us not confound them. Sons of light must not have fellowship with doctrines or deeds of darkness. The children of the day must be sober, honest, and bold in their Lord’s work, leaving the works of darkness to those who shall dwell in it for ever. Our ecclesias should by discipline divide the light from the darkness, and we should by our distinct separation from the world do the same. In judgment, in action, in hearing, in teaching, in association, we must discern between the precious and the vile, and maintain the great distinction which the Lord made upon the world’s first day.

“A believer has two principles at work within him. In his natural estate he was subject to one principle only, which was darkness; now light has entered, and the two principles disagree. Mark the apostle Paul’s words… ‘I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, which is in my members’ [Rom 7:21-23]. How is this state of things occasioned? ‘The Lord divided the light from the darkness.’ Darkness, by itself, is quiet and undisturbed, but when the Lord sends in light, there is a conflict, for the one is in opposition to the other: a conflict which will never cease till the believer is altogether light in the Lord. If there be a division within the individual Christian, there is certain to be a division without. So soon as the Lord gives to any man light, he proceeds to separate himself from the darkness around; he secedes from a merely worldly religion of outward ceremonial, for nothing short of the gospel of Christ will now satisfy him, and he withdraws himself from worldly society and frivolous amusements, and seeks the company of the saints, for ‘We know we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren’ [1Jo 3:14]. The light gathers to itself, and the darkness to itself. What God has divided, let us never try to unite, but as Christ went without the camp, bearing His reproach [Heb 13:13], so let us come out from the ungodly, and be a peculiar people. He was holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners [Heb 7:26]; and, as he was, so we are to be nonconformists to the world, dissenting from all sin, and distinguished from the rest of mankind by our likeness to our Master” (CHS).

Gen 1:5

Alt rend: “And the evening was, and the morning was, etc.” A traditional Heb expression: lit 24-hour day: Exo 20:9-11. The natural order of the day: from dark (first) to light. Spiritual lessons!

“The evening was ‘darkness’ and the morning was ‘light,’ and yet the two together are called by the name that is given to the light alone! This is somewhat remarkable, but it has an exact analogy in spiritual experience. In every believer there is darkness and light, and yet he is not to be named a sinner because there is sin in him, but he is to be named a saint because he possesses some degree of holiness. This will be a most comforting thought to those who are mourning their infirmities, and who ask, ‘Can I be a child of God while there is so much darkness in me?’ Yes; for you, like the day, take not your name from the evening, but from the morning; and you are spoken of in the word of God as if you were even now perfectly holy as you will be soon. You are called the child of light, though there is darkness in you still. You are named after what is the predominating quality in the sight of God, which will one day be the only principle remaining. Observe that the evening comes first. Naturally we are darkness first in order of time, and the gloom is often first in our mournful apprehension, driving us to cry out in deep humiliation, ‘God be merciful to me, a sinner.’ The place of the morning is second, it dawns when grace overcomes nature” (CHS).

Gen 1:6

Nothing “good” created on 2nd day, but only the rearrangement of waters.

GOD: Elohim.

EXPANSE: “Firmament” (AV). Heb “expansion” (AV mg). To spread, or stretch, as Job 37:18.

Gen 1:7

Day Two: the only day in which God did not pronounce “Good”.

GOD: Elohim.

UNDER… ABOVE: Once, a vapor cover encircled the earth to a great altitude: cp Psa 29:10; 148:9. This caused an even, warm climate — a greenhouse, or tropical effect; and protection from radiation (the reason for very long lives in the beginning?). Spiritual lesson: clouds, mists = the righteous (Rev 1:7n); oceans, lakes = the wicked (Rev 17:15; Isa 57:20).

Gen 1:8

GOD: Elohim.

SKY: “Heaven” (AV). Heb “shameh”: sig “lofty” (singular, not as plural in v 1).

Gen 1:9

GOD: Elohim.

LET DRY GROUND (LAND) APPEAR: Being “born” out of the water = baptism! On the 3rd “day” of 1,000 years, Israel appears as the “earth” among the other nations (“waters”). As in Hag 2:6; Act 17:26, God sets “bounds” on both lit and fig “seas”.

Gen 1:11

GOD: Elohim.

VEGETATION: “Grass” (AV). AV mg: Heb “tender grass”, from rt “to sprout forth”, as the “flesh” in Isa 40:6-8.

SEED-BEARING PLANTS: “Herb yielding seed” (AV). The higher forms, edible (cp Gen 1:29).

ACCORDING TO THEIR KINDS: This phrase, 10 times in Gen 1.

SEED: The seed = God’s continuing creation: In men, to bring forth fruit (Gal 5:22). In 3rd 1,000-year period, the promise to Abraham and his “seed” Christ (Gen 13:15).

Gen 1:14

On the 4th day (of 1,000 years), a more distinct light — ie, Christ — appears!

GOD: Elohim.

LIGHTS: Heb “meoroth”, not as in vv 1-5. Here, “luminaries” or “lamps”, as in tabernacle: Exo 25:6; Lev 24:2; Num 4:9,16.

TO SEPARATE (DIVIDE) THE DAY FROM THE NIGHT: AV mg: Heb “between the light and between the darkness”.

The study of the heavens: Job 9:9; 38:31,32; Amo 5:8; Isa 40:26. The heavenly bodies can teach God’s purpose: Psa 89:36,37; Mal 4:1,2; Dan 12:3; Psa 8:1,2; 19:1 (“The heavens declare the glory of God”).

The lights in the sky and the seasons they pattern are regarded thereafter as signs of Gods gracious, sovereign ordering of all of life. Out of nothing came not randomness or chaos but a divinely ordered progression of time, through segments called seasons, which in themselves show the pattern of life and death and life again.

SIGNS: Heb “othoth”, from rt “to come”, ie prophecies (Jer 10:2).

SEASONS: “Appointed”, ie cycles of time — used 3 times in ref to promised “seed”: Gen 17:21; 18:14; 21:2.

Gen 1:15

Poss the light of the first day of creation was the Shekinah Glory of God. Now, on Day 4, that function of giving light to the earth is taken over by created lights. Cp Isa 60:19,20. Two different words for light(s) are used in Gen 1:3,4 and Gen 1:14-16.

Gen 1:16

GOD: Elohim.

MADE: Heb “asah” = “appoint” (Psa 104:19). Notice: this is NOT the “creation” of the sun, etc. These were created earlier (v 3), but now — for the first time — they appear, and are visible from the earth, and are “appointed” by God as the lights that we now know.

LIGHTS: Cp v. 14n.

LIGHT: “Meowr”, the sing. of word in v 14.

THE GREATER LIGHT: The sun = Christ (Mal 4:2; Joh 8:12; 2Sa 23:4). The absence of Christ = “night” (Joh 9:4,5). The sun in Scripture (perh) = Christ. (Psa 19:4-6; 2Sa 23:4; Mal 4:1-3). The setting and rising of the sun = Christ’s death and resurrection. Sun, moon, and stars often = Israel. In Joseph’s dream (Gen 37:9-10) the sun (Jacob), moon (Jacob’s wife), and 11 stars (his brothers) bow down to him; basis for Israel being repr quite often by sun, moon, and stars. See also Jer 31:35,36; Gen 22:17; Dan 8:10 (cp v 24); Amos 8:9; Isa 30:26.

TO GOVERN (RULE): Mg: “for the rule of”.

THE LESSER LIGHT: This will one day rival the sun: Isa 30:26. The moon = (?) the ecclesia: reflective and inconstant, but also a light (Phi 2:15,16; Mat 5:14; Song 6:10).

Gen 1:18

TO SEPARATE (DIVIDE) THE LIGHT FROM THE DARKNESS: Essential moral lesson: “What communion hath light with darkness? Or what concord hath Christ with Belial?” (2Co 6:14). Christ, the “light”, is separate from sinners (Heb 7:26).

Gen 1:20

GOD: Elohim.

WATERS: That is, the waters above the firmament: Gen 1:7.

TEEM: AV: “Bring forth abundantly”: “Swarm”, RV mg. Note that Life comes out of the water (Rom 6)!

Gen 1:21

GOD… US: Elohim. Plural: “sons of God”, ie angels (Job 38:7; Gen 3:22; Psa 8:5; cp Num 12:8; Act 7:38; Gen 32:30 with Hos 12:3,4; 1Ki 22:19). The plural prob relates to angels, although the verb here is singular. So God prob entered into consultation with His surrounding hosts and conferred with them on the creation of man in their joint image. Angels involved in creation: Job 38:4-7; Psa 148:2 (describing creative acts of Gen 1); Psa 104:4,5 — again in a creative context.

IMAGE: “Tselem”. Form, appearance, shadow — as Jam 3:9. Typ God’s creation in Christ: “in his image” (Col 1:15; Heb 1:1-3). God Himself and Elohim have a form and body. We are a copy of that (Ber 65:2,3; Elp 37-41). See Lesson, Gen 1:26, “Us”.

LIKENESS: “Damuth”. Capacity, authority, status — as Eze 1:5; Isa 40:18,25; 46:5. See Article, Image and likeness of God.

LET THEM RULE OVER: A purpose for man, beyond all the rest of God’s creation. “Last Adam” and his “bride” to have dominion over all God’s creatures: Psa 8:4,6; Heb 2:6-8.

IN HIS OWN IMAGE: But after the Fall, Adam made a son in HIS (not God’s) image (Gen 5:1-3)!

SUBDUE: “To tread down; to bring under control”. Implies that the one being subdued is hostile and there is need for correction: sw Jos 18:1, Jer 34:11,16, Num 32:22,29, Est 7:8.

RULE OVER: “Have dominion” (AV). Cp Psa 8:4-6. But Adam lost this dominion in curse: cp Heb 2:8,9. Ct here with Noah’s time (Gen 9:2-5) and Exo 21:28. Christ will have dominion: Psa 2:8; 72:8. See also Phi 2:5-10; 3:20,21; Joh 16:33; 17:1,2; Mat 28:18; 1Co 15:27; Col 1:15-23; 1Pe 3:22.

GOOD: “Tob”. LM 104. Never after this is man so described, but rather: Gen 8:21; Ecc 7:29; Jer 10:23; Mar 7:21-23; Mat 10:18; Rom 7:23. At this time, sin and death had not yet entered the world (cp Gen 2:25). Everything will be made “tob” — good, beautiful — in God’s own time (Ecc 3:11). “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy” (Job 38:4-7).

VERY GOOD: As used of the Creation, this phrase appears only here, in v 31. Now, for the first time, all God saw was “VERY good” — because the Creation was finished? or because Man was the culminating expression of God’s creative force?

“Total peace and joy for man are found only in total service to God. That is man’s original and ‘natural’ condition. That must be gained. All life must be given to the effort. All else is degeneration and perversion without promise or hope” (GVG). Ct with Gen 6:12: “God saw… and the earth was… corrupt.”

Gen 2:2

BY THE SEVENTH DAY: Note, in ct to earlier days, there is no “evening”, no “night” there (cp Rev 22:5).

HE RESTED: God could only so “rest” while there was no sin in the world. “Finished” or “ceased” does not imply He was weary! See Heb 3:7-4:1. God does not need to rest. He “faints not, neither is weary” (Isa 40:28). Why this terminology?: (a) an example of anthropopatheticism, ie speaking of God as though He had all the feelings of a man (Eze 38:18; Gen 9:16; etc); (b) the angels, present at Creation (Exo 31:17).

Gen 2:3

BLESSED: The word may carry the sense of a gift, or endowment.

MADE IT HOLY: “Sanctified it” (AV). Set apart. Separation, and special observance. But the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath: Mar 2:27; Isa 58:13.

Gen 2:4

Gen 2:4-4:26: “Generations of heaven and earth”: Fall of Adam, mortality, “men of earth” (Gen 4:17-24), in ct to men of God (Seth’s seed: Gen 5:1-6:8).

GENERATIONS: “Toledoth”, history, story, account. Not just genealogy. “The gens of…” — 11 times in Genesis (see outline, Gen 1). 3 other times in all Bible: (1) Moses, Aaron: Num 3:1; (2) Pharez (Rth 4:18); and (3) Jesus Christ (Mat 1:1).

LORD: First time Yahweh is used in the Bible.

WHEN: AV has “in the day”, but not limited to a 24-hour period (cp Num 7:84).

Gen 2:5

PLANT: Cultivated plants, in ct other “herbs” of Gen 1:11. The later cultivation of the earth would be part of the “curse”: Gen 3:17,18,23.

NOT… RAIN: Earth was obviously very warm and tropical; thus rain turned to vapor and mist (Gen 1:7). Earth was mainly lowlands (Gen 7:19). Ct Gen 7:4: when the rains came, they would be in judgment!

Gen 2:7

FORMED: As potter with clay: Isa 29:16; Jer 18:4.

MAN… GROUND: Adam… adamah. The physical constitution of man. God: the animating factor, the motivating force. Will God forsake His own handiwork?

DUST: No inherent immortality: Psa 51:12.

BREATH OF LIFE: Neshama chai.

LIVING BEING: AV has “living soul”. In Heb, “chai nephesh”.

“The two entities ‘soul’ and ‘spirit’ are carefully distinguished in both OT and NT. The word ‘soul’, translated from ‘nephesh’ in Hebrew and ‘psyche’ in Greek, represents the living principle of the body, and is shared by man and the animals. On the fifth day of creation, as God created animal life in the oceans, and birds, He designated them as having ‘life’ (Gen 1:20), or ‘nephesh’. On the sixth day, ‘Man became a living SOUL’ (Gen 2:7) as well. The soul refers to desires and appetites both of the flesh and the mind, perhaps summed up by the word ‘consciousness.’ Plants, while alive in the biological sense, are not conscious (this may also be true for certain other ‘lower’ organisms classified as animals by modern biology), and therefore not alive in the Biblical sense, nor does their death imply Biblical ‘death.’

“The ‘spirit’ is quite different. God Himself ‘breathed into (man’s) nostrils the breath (ruach) of life’ (Gen 2:7), thereby imparting only to mankind some measure of His own spiritual nature. It is noteworthy, that while God is identified as ‘Spirit’ (John 4:24 — Greek ‘pneuma’), nowhere is He identified as ‘soul.’ He stands separate from mere beings, not driven by the same desires as animals and man” (New Bible Commentary).

Gen 2:8

GARDEN: An area protected by fence = a way of life, protected by teaching and separation from outside influences. “Paradise” (LXX): Luk 23:43; Isa 51:3; Joh 19:41 (Christ in garden).

EDEN: Sig “delight” or “pleasure” (Gen 2:10,15; 3:23,24; 4:16). Paradise is an area on the earth! Encompasses all of Modest, including Assyria and Persia, Syria (2Ki 19:12; 37:12), and Palestine also (Gen 13:10-12). See Eze 31:3,8,9; 28:13-19; 27:23. This vast area has been the field of conflict between “serpent” and “seed” ever since (Mat 23:35) — Elp 56.

Gen 2:9

TREE OF LIFE: Eating of it conferred immortality. Sym power and wisdom of God: Pro 3:13,18; 1Co 1:24. Christ in Rev 22:2. In tabernacle, an almond tree (Exo 25:31-33). Aaron’s rod was of almond (Num 17:8). The almond bloomed in early spring, pointing to resurrection. Truth = tree of life (Psa 1:3; Pro 3:18; 11:30; 13:12; 15:4; 1Pe 1:23-25). Jesus: the branch (Zec 6:12); vine (Joh 15:1,5). The cross, a tree (Act 5:30; 13:29; 1Pe 2:24). Ct two trees: (1) Tree of knowledge, etc: planted by God, pleasant, forbidden, brought death. (2) Cross of death: planted by man, hideous, commanded, brings life.

TREE OF KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL: Note similarity with Christ at death: Deu 21:23n. Christ = tree of life, in midst of the garden. Other trees = tree of knowledge of good (repentant thief) and evil (2nd thief).

Gen 2:10

A river came from Eden, in the west, to water the garden in the east (near the Tigris/Euphrates? Elp 57).

A river of life, in the Garden of Eden: spiritual water from the rock (Exo 17:5,6; 1Co 10:1-4); fountain of life (Psa 36:8,9; 46:4); wells of salvation (Isa 12:2,3; 44:3,4; 49:10; 55:1,3; Eze 47:1-12; Zec 14:8); water springing up unto everlasting life (Joh 4:10-14; 7:37-39); and the water of life (Rev 21:6; 22:1,17).

FOUR HEADWATERS (HEADS): Perh Tigris and Euphrates at that time joined and then separated again, thus forming the 4 branches (Spk). But the world’s topography has been changed drastically by the Flood; thus the locations of some of the rivers is uncertain. Silt deposited by the Tigris/Euphr has caused the sea to recede approx 80 miles since beginning (Expos 1:60). Sym Christ as river of life, divided into 4 “heads”, the 4 gospels, flowing out to all mankind. Cp Psa 46:4; Joh 7:37,39.

GIHON: Poss Nile. Sig “bursting”. More likely, the eastern branch of 4-headed river, in Kushistan.

TIGRIS: “Hiddekel” in AV. Perh “darting arrow”. The Tigris (Dan 10:4).

IT RUNS ALONG THE EAST SIDE (ie “face” in Heb) OF ASSHUR, or Assyria. The river of God, flowing from Eden, will turn back the “face” of the Assyrian (Dan 12:6,7; Mic 5:5).

MAN: Adam (AV mg).

WORK… TAKE CARE OF: True happiness is found in creative cooperation with God, not in idleness. Work, under the instruction of the Elohim (Job 32:8; VH 56; Elp 72). (Note: these are fem verbs, while “garden” is masc; but “commandment”/v 16, and “law/torah” and “covenant/berith” are fem!)

Gen 2:17

TREE OF KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL: Eating the forbidden fruit was sin. Man comes to know sin by God’s Law (Rom 3:20; 7:7). By disobeying God’s Law, they learned the meaning of sin, by practical experience. Every person, at an accountable age, begins to eat of this tree. Tree of knowledge = age of accountability (Deu 1:39: children not responsible). Adam was still a “child”. Tree = judicial discernment between good and evil: 2Sa 14:17; 1Ki 3:9.

“It wasn’t the ‘apple’ on the tree that caused the problem. It was the ‘pair’ on the ground!”

WHEN: AV has “in the day”. Not nec the same 24-hour day (cp. 2:4). Adam lived 930 years in all (Gen 5:5).

YOU WILL SURELY DIE: Heb “dying thou shalt die”. A process of death? (Ct with serpent’s words in Gen 3:4.) “And Adam would have literally died, except this repentance caused God to alter His original plan. Other examples: (1) 40 years delay entering Promised Land, (2) Hezekiah’s 15 extra years” (WRev 266).

Why is it almost universally assumed that the forbidden fruit was an apple? Perhaps because apple is Latin is “malam”, and “evil” in Latin is “malum”, and the closeness in the sound/spelling was thought to give a hint as to the identity of the fruit.

Gen 2:18

I WILL MAKE A HELPER SUITABLE FOR HIM: The first “I will” of the Bible is answered by (one of) the last: “I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb”: Rev 21:9.

SUITABLE: “Meet” (AV), ie “fit”. AV mg: “as before him”.

Is it also true that it was/is not good for GOD to be alone?

We often mention that Adam and Eve in the garden are a pattern of Christ and the Bride/church. But before there was Christ and the Church, there was the Father and “Israel”… also patterned by Adam and Eve.

If God reveals that it was not good for Adam to be alone, but that he needed a companion… surely it was a patterned or figurative way of saying, “It is not good for ME to be alone… l must have a companion!”

And all of God’s work from that day to this, especially involving His Son, has been for that express purpose: of creating a “companion” (actually, a company of companions) for His eternal fellowship. That is what the “new creation” is all about.

Look at it another way: (1) If our own observation/experience shows us how unsatisfactory life can be if lived entirely alone, with no regard for or fellowship with others, and how much we need companionship, personal and spiritual and sympathetic and loving… and (2) If we are made in the image and likeness of God, then… reasoning backward… it is not good that God Himself be alone either!

I remember some years ago a young sister asking in a Bible class: “Why does God love me?” The question passed with perfunctory discussion, and I at first dismissed it from my mind as of no great consequence. But then the question came back to me again later… and it suddenly seemed to be of enormous import: “WHY does God love me?” Not just the fact of His love, but the rationale behind it! I finally came to the conclusion that: God loves me because He needs someone to love, and He needs someone to love Him… and that somehow even the Omnipotence of the Universe would be incomplete without the love, freely given, of His creation!

So why weren’t/aren’t the angels enough? I would think it is because their devotion is almost preprogrammed… whereas our devotion/love is out of our own wills, freely given. And this is what God is looking for! And this is why He had to create beings like Adam and Eve with the potential to choose, and hence the potential to disappoint him greatly… but also with the potential — what a potential! — to please Him.

Now there’s a thought: that our disregard for the Father can truly hurt him! What a responsibility to consider!

A wife is responsible to keep her husband from being alone in a terribly lonely world. A wife is a hedge against the alienation that comes from being human. She is a sanctuary when he battles with pain and criticism. Few people care about a man’s dreams, hopes, fears. Society tells him he’s out of sync. His friends lack real love and intimacy. Since being expelled from Eden, man vaguely remembers and longs for the fellowship and completeness only God Himself can supply. But, in the interim, a wife can help more than almost anyone, or anything, else.

“One day, we stopped by the house of an elderly couple, and the husband joyfully insisted that we join them for some ice cream and cake because it was their 50th anniversary, ‘Fifty years!’ I exclaimed. ‘That’s a long time with one person!’ ‘It would have been a lot longer without her,’ the husband replied.”

BONE OF MY BONES: All other creatures, both male and female, were created independently from elements. They had, and have, no moral allegiance or sympathy toward one another. Man and woman are of one flesh. They do have such ties. Their relations are intended to be governed by the very highest ideal: the Marriage of the Lamb (Rev 19:7,8; Eph 5:29-33; Psa 45; Song). “What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mat 19:5,6).

It has been said that “Eve was made from a rib taken from Adam’s side, not from his head that she might be his superior, nor from his feet that she might be trampled on at will, but from his side… that she might be his equal — and from under his heart, that she might be cherished, and loved.”

WOMAN: Heb “isha”.

MAN: Heb “ish”. Not “adam”. “Ish” sig Adam’s comprehension of higher things.

Gen 2:24

V 24 is spoken by God. The ecclesia/wife must be faithful (ct Jam 4:4; Rev 2:14; Hos 2:1-5), and bring forth fruit to her “husband” (1Ti 2:15; Gal 4:26; Isa 53:10; Rom 7:4).

ONE FLESH: An intimate union, as 1Co 6:16.

“We were visiting friends when they received a telephone call from their recently married daughter. After several tense minutes on the phone, the mother told the father to pick up the extension. The newlyweds had had their first big fight. In a few moments, the father rejoined us and tersely explained, ‘Said she wanted to come home.’ ‘What did you tell her?’ I asked. ‘I told her she was home’ ” (Larry Cunningham, quoted in Reader’s Digest).

In the Chinese language whole words are written with a symbol. Often two completely unlike symbols, when put together, have a meaning different than either of their two separate components. An example is the symbol for “man,” and that for “woman.” When combined, they mean “good.” How wise are the Chinese!

Gen 2:25

NAKED: “Gahroom”, rel “subtil” in Gen 3:1? Nakedness = sin (Mic 1:11; 2Co 5:3; Rev 3:17; cp Gen 3:7). At this time, they had no sin (innocent in conscience) and hence were not ashamed of their nakedness. No proneness to lust or sin: “very good” (Gen 1:31). (Babylon’s tradition of the fall: Halley 68.)

Gen 3:1

Gen 3 presents the perfect miniaturized picture of God’s plan of salvation thru Christ: (1) It begins with: Serpent, Flesh, Death and Adam. It ends with: Cherubim, Spirit, Life, and Christ. (2) It begins with the tree of knowledge of good and evil; it ends with the tree of life. (3) It begins with an ineffective covering of fig leaves; it ends with an effective covering of skin, requiring bloodshed. (4) In the center, at its turning point, it tells of the cursing of the serpent and the blessing of the seed of the woman.

Notice how many pts in Mosaic Law are rooted in sin of Eden (Gen 3): (1) Serpent an abomination (Lev 11:42). (2) Nakedness to be avoided (Exo 20:26). (3) To uncover nakedness = sexual union (Lev 18:6-19; 20:11). (4) Childbirth brings uncleanness (Lev 12:1-8). (5) Reproductive functions, even innocent ones, unclean (Lev 15:16-28). (6) Hanging on tree (Deu 21:23/Gal 3:13) rel to trees of Gen 3.

SERPENT: From Heb rt “quickness of perception”; in Greek, “to see”. Heb “to hiss, to divine”; thus, voice of flesh: Ecc 10:11; Psa 12:4. The serpent was “Satan”, ie an adversary (Num 22:22; 2Co 11:3,14), an animal with a mind adverse to (at enmity with) God. A literal serpent: 2Co 11;3.

CRAFTY: “Subtle” (AV). Same basic word as “naked” (gahroom) in Gen 2:25. Simply, “wise” — good in itself (Mat 10:16), but here untempered by morality. The serpent had no regard for God’s Law. Either this particular serpent was made that way by God, or, more prob, he ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge and thus acquired extraordinary powers. If he ate of the tree, this would explain:

  1. His power of speech.
  2. His subtlety: no other serpent has had this cleverness.
  3. There is some subtlety in: “Ye shall not surely die”, ie, ‘See, I’m eating it, and no harm comes to me.’
  4. The curse on the serpent now takes on a special fitness: “Upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat” — a sharp contrast with climbing the tree of knowledge and eating its fruit.

DID GOD REALLY SAY?: A reflective, doubting question. Beginning of doubt in the word of God: 3 steps: (1) doubt, (2) disbelief, (3) denial.

Part of the great original “lie” is the idea that there should be no restrictions in the perfect plan of a loving God. Ever since Eden, philosophers have labored under this misconception: ‘How could a kind Father allow any of His children to suffer? to hurt? to die?’ This single erroneous idea is responsible for a myriad of false beliefs and false hopes.

ANY: Or “every” (AV). An exaggeration for effect.

“Many years ago, Indian youths would go away in solitude to prepare for manhood. One such youth hiked into a beautiful valley, green with trees, bright with flowers. There he fasted. But on the third day, as he looked up at the surrounding mountains, he noticed one tall rugged peak, capped with dazzling snow. I will test myself against that mountain, he thought. He put on his buffalo-hide shirt, threw his blanket over his shoulders and set off to climb the peak. When he reached the top he stood on the rim of the world. He could see forever, and his heart swelled with pride.

“Then he heard a rustle at his feet, and looking down, he saw a snake. Before he could move, the snake spoke. ‘I am about to die,’ said the snake. ‘It is too cold for me up here and I am freezing. There is no food and I am starving. Put me under your shirt and take me down to the valley.’ ‘No,’ said the youth. ‘I am forewarned. I know your kind. You are a rattlesnake. If I pick you up, you will bite, and your bite will kill me.’ ‘Not so,’ said the snake. ‘I will treat you differently. If you do this for me, you will be special. I will not harm you.’ The youth resisted awhile, but this was a very persuasive snake with beautiful markings. At last the youth tucked it under his shirt and carried it down to the valley. There he laid it gently on the grass, when suddenly the snake coiled, rattled, and leapt, biting him on the leg. ‘But you promised…’ cried the youth. ‘You knew what I was when you picked me up.’ said the snake as it slithered away’ ” (Ancient American Indian legend).

A favorite nursery rhyme is the familiar tale of an egg that takes an unfortunate tumble: “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men Couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.”

This piece of wisdom is a relic thousands of years old. Versions have appeared in eight European languages. In its primitive stages, however, Humpty Dumpty was a riddle. It asked the question: what, when broken, can never be repaired, not even by strong or wise individuals? As any child knows, an egg. Regardless of how hard we try, a broken egg can never be put back together again. We simply have to learn to live with the mess.

There is a Humpty Dumpty story in the Bible. We call it the Fall. Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit. They claim they now possess the necessary wisdom to be like God. When the dust settles, Adam and Eve are not perched on a lofty plane. They have fallen. Regardless of how hard we try, things can never be put back together again.

Our contemporary fall is seen in the feeling that things just don’t work anymore. Our lives appear out of control. Changes come faster than our ability to cope. Broken eggs are an appropriate symbol. Wherever we step we hear the crunch of fragile shells beneath our feet.

Gen 3:2

When repeating Gen 2:16, Eve appears to leave out the “free to”. Had she lost sight of the blessing involved?

Gen 3:3

BUT GOD DID SAY: Note the reversal of stress: Eve dwells most on the (relatively minor) prohibition, rather than the (very generous) allowances. “Insensible to the free grant of many trees, we take it amiss that one should be withheld — and fret under the wholesome restraint of duty” (Candlish, Gen 48).

YOU MUST NOT TOUCH IT: Where was this said?! Apparently, this represents added theology!

Gen 3:4

YOU WILL NOT SURELY DIE: The first lie: cp Pro 30:6; Joh 8:44; 3:8,15. The first hint of false belief in man’s immortality — making God a liar (1Jo 5:10). A reliance upon God’s mercy (tree of life) with no regard for His majesty (tree of knowledge).

Gen 3:5

“Let us sin; then we shall learn by experience how to avoid the consequences.”

Original sin was mankind’s lust after self-sufficient knowledge, a craving to shake off all external authority and work things out for himself.

LIKE GOD: Or “as gods” (AV). “Elohim” (plural), prob ref the angels of God. Jewish rabbis so understood it: the Targum says, “And the Lord God said to the angels who minister before him, ‘Behold, Adam was alone on the earth as I am alone in the heavens on high. From him there will arise those who will know how to distinguish between good and evil. If he had kept the commandments {which} I commanded him he would have lived and endured like the tree of life forever. But now, since he has not observed what I commanded him, let us decree against him, and let us banish him from the Garden of Eden, before he puts forth his hand and takes {also} of the fruit of the tree of life. For behold, if he eats of it, he will live and endure forever.’ “

KNOWING GOOD AND EVIL: Intimately acquainted with evil, as God is. “But they learned good without the power to do it, and evil without the power to avoid it” (CHM 43).

Gen 3:6

The latent propensities are excited: (1) “lust of flesh”, (2) “of eyes”, and (3) “pride of life”: 1Jo 2:16; Elp 82,83; Jam 1:14,15; Achan in Jos 7:20,21.

“There is nothing like a sense of unreasonable deprivation to make a person urgently desire what is withheld” (Joan Thomas).

WHEN THE WOMAN SAW THAT THE FRUIT OF THE TREE WAS GOOD FOR FOOD: How did she know this? Poss by observing the serpent eating of the tree? Cp the curse on serpent: ‘Now you shall eat dust!” (Gen 3:14).

AND HE DID EAT: “Great sociality in sin” (HPM; cp Elp 123). Being tempted by Eve (1Ti 2:14); note Pro 5; 7). JT suggests that this first union produced Cain — ie, the “seed of the serpent”: Gen 3:15.

What kind of love is that? It all started with a tree. It will end with a tree. But there had to be that tree in the middle.

The sad one.

Eve thought she wanted the knowledge of good and evil — a shortcut to being in her Father’s image. Instead she reaped the whirlwind of constant conflict between good and evil. Her “seed” wielded the sword of the spirit and conquered the flesh, overcoming evil in the supreme act of obedience and love for the Father — self-sacrifice. But not just “self-sacrifice”, but a kind of love the world has never known. Perhaps there was a hint of that love in Judah’s humble plea before Joseph to give up his freedom for his thieving, ungrateful (or so he thought) little brother Benjamin: “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come upon my father.”

And there was another hint in the heart of Moses when in his great love for God and his idolatrous brethren he prayed, “But now, please forgive their sin — but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.” Later the Apostle Paul exhibited an inkling of this phenomenal love: “For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race…” What kind of love is this that would sacrifice itself for miserable sinners?

Show me the way to that tree, please. “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly… But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us… when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son…”

I want to follow in His steps ALL THE WAY to the cross. “..if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him…”

But how? How do I love my spouse like that, my children, my home ecclesia, my neighbor?

Maybe it’s something like inviting a lonely one to lunch on Sunday after meeting instead of planning something fun that I want to do. Maybe it’s making a phone call in the evening after work to a wayward one instead of watching a video or listening to my favorite music on CD. Or being patient, comforting and encouraging to an erring one when I could just be “right” instead.

Gen 3:7

THE EYES OF BOTH OF THEM WERE OPENED: 3:7 The opening of the eyes of Adam and Eve caused confusion and distress whereas the opening of the eyes of the two on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:31) caused joy and enlightenment.

It is not surprising that many of the abominations and instances of uncleanness under the Law of Moses reflect the events in the Garden of Eden. Not only is the serpent an abomination (Lev 11:42), but nakedness is to be scrupulously avoided (Exo 20:26). In fact, to uncover another’s nakedness becomes, in the Hebrew, a euphemism for sexual union (Lev 18:6-19; 20:11), probably because the sexual union of Adam and Eve followed close upon their realization of their “naked” state. Since the image of the “serpent-mind” is inherited by each generation from the preceding one, therefore childbirth also brings a stigma of uncleanness (Lev 12:1-8). Even the reproductive functions of both men and women in their most innocent aspects are nevertheless “unclean” under the Law (Lev 15:16-28).

Since death came into the world because of Adam’s sin, merely to touch a dead body brings an unclean condition. And the legal decree of Deu 21:23, finding its fulfillment in Gal 3:13 (“Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree”), probably has its origin and justification in the fact that sin first entered the world in the eating of fruit from a tree!

The tragedy of Eden, then, was kept before the eyes of the Jews in many ways. It must not be forgotten, since it was a reminder of how they had come to be in their fallen condition. But for those who looked beyond the surface, there were also prophetic types of the redemptive work of Christ. In becoming the “last Adam”, in order to undo the consequences of the first Adam’s sin, he came under all the aspects of the Edenic curse: he was born “of a woman, under the Law” (Gal 4:4), necessitating a cleansing sacrifice even by his birth (Luke 2:21-24). He possessed a “serpent-nature” in common with all men, and ultimately he crucified that nature by lifting it up on a “tree” (Num 21:6-9; John 3:14), in the process being stripped naked. And thus he died, again bringing legal defilement to himself and those who handled his body.

The Law of Moses, and the curse of Eden, cast a shadow over even this perfect man. But his life was of such quality and worth that the shadows could not remain. As the great light of the sun, when it rises in its splendor, drives away all shadows… so the perfect wholeness and beauty of the Son’s character overcame every legal blemish and imperfection — and in effect rendered them, and the whole system of which they were a part, null and void. Death could not hold HIM in the grave; mere legal defilement could not sully his majesty — God’s justice would allow no such thing: “This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him” (Acts 2:23,24).

Nor can mere legal defilement stand in our way of sharing in the glorious redemption which our Savior has made possible for us! “When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ” (Col 2:13-17).

OPENED: Awareness of inflamed passions. Fleshly inclinations aroused. Ashamed of nakedness. “Nakedness” = sinfulness in Rev 3:17; 16:15; 2Ch 27:19.

Cp Deu 23:13 (where “excrement” is, lit, “that which comes out”) with Mar 7:15,20,21 and Mat 15:18,19 (where sin is equated with excrement). In Deu 23 God is said to be walking in the midst of the camp (as he is here, in the midst of the garden), and that He is too holy to look upon that which is “indecent”. Could this explain, in part, the need that Adam and Eve felt to cover themselves? (Does this suggest that now, for the first time, they have need to relieve themselves, and this induces shame at the indecency?)

FIG LEAVES: Cp Cain’s sacrifice: 4:5. “Many inventions” (Ecc 7:29). The fig points to Israel, and its special worship at a later date (see Joe 1:7: Luk 21:29). The “fig leaf” coverings of Mosaic Law — this type of covering was cursed by Christ in Mar 11:33,34. No shedding of blood: Heb 9:22; Mat 26:28.

COVERINGS: “Aprons” (AV); “things to gird about” (AV mg).

Gen 3:8

SOUND: “Voice” (AV). Transl “sound” (RV): cp 2Sa 5:24; 2Ki 6:32. “The voice of God” = His representative, who speaks for Him (cp Exo 23:21). God is seeking Adam and Eve… He wants sinners to worship Him: Joh 4:23.

AS HE WAS WALKING: Was this a daily habit, so as to teach Adam and Eve?

COOL: AV mg “wind”. Perh the cool of the evening, dawning towards a new day.

HID: An impossible task! Attempts to hide sin from God will always be unsuccessful: Jer 23:24; Heb 4:13; Amo 9:2,3. “[In sin] we resort to the trees of the garden — the affairs or amusements of the world, the forms and ceremonies of religion, or its wordy technicalities, or its fervors and passions, or its busy activities… whatever, in short, may serve to fill a certain space, and bulk to a certain size, as a barrier between God and the heart that shrinks from too direct an approach to him. And we soothe ourselves with the notion that this hedge… serves the same purpose on God’s side as on ours…” (Candlish 53).

Gen 3:9

CALLED, in longsuffering, patience, mercy.

WHERE ARE YOU?: ie, “In what condition are you?”

Gen 3:10

I WAS AFRAID… SO I HID: As if Adam had come to the judgment of God (indeed, he had!), but was now afraid to stand there — so he seeks for more time, better preparation, etc! But — by contrast — there is “no fear in love” (1Jo 4:18).

BECAUSE I WAS NAKED: Nakedness as a symbol of sin: The remedy for this: to be clothed with the white raiment (Rev 3:18; 16:15; 19:8; Gal 3:27).

AFRAID: The result of a defiled conscience. The fear of God is beginning of knowledge (Pro 1:7).

The legacy of Adam’s sin for all mankind was fear, more urgent, insidious, worse than death (which does not bother us for most of our lives). Fear fills our lives, our minds, warps our thoughts, weakens resolve, poisons relationships with others and with God, and hides us from the love and grace of our Lord. Fear aggravates disease and hastens death. Our habits, even our characters, are largely formed through fear. Some are aggressive, intolerant, talkative, arrogant, contemptuous of others, boastful, angry (as, for example, a mother’s angry welcome to a child she feared was lost). Some are reserved, shy, silent, polite out of fear. Religion is distorted by fear: of upsetting God or the sect, fear of divine disapproval and punishment in this life or the next, or of sectarian displeasure or excommunication. Some hate, some love from fear. We fear losing things — money, jobs, position, security, men’s goodwill or respect, friends, loved ones. Do we fear losing our place in the kingdom? Do we fear not being “good enough” for our Saviour? Are we afraid our treasures of good works are not yet sufficient to protect us from condemnation, as we are afraid we have not sufficient earthly treasure to protect us from want? Fear fills hospitals, mental homes, refugee camps. Fear is at the root of divisions, wars, oppression, terrorism. Either to bring relief from fear, or to instill fear in others.

We are even afraid openly to acknowledge fear. Stress, anxiety, worry, shyness, reserve, inferiority complex, lack of self-confidence, depression: all these may be manifestations of fear. A score of euphemisms for “I was afraid and I hid myself”… in addictions to drink or drugs or self-pity?… taken for temporary but useless relief.

The remedy? “Fear not!” A true and sincere and full faith in God and His promises is the only real antidote to fear. This comes from reading the Bible, and believing it.

Gen 3:11

WHO TOLD YOU?: Adam stands self-condemned by his own words, as do we all.

Gen 3:12

By ct, Jesus accepts blame for his bride: Mat 8:17; Psa 69:5; Eph 5:26; 1Pe 2:24.

Gen 3:13

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? Cp Gen 4:10; 20:9; 31:26; 1Sa 13:11; Joh 18:35.

Gen 3:14

Man blames the woman (Gen 3:12); the woman blames the serpent (Gen 3:13); but the serpent has no one to blame!

Christ destroys the devil (Heb 2:14; Rom 8:3; Jam 1:13-15).

CURSED ARE YOU: Even the non-responsible are often punished: Gen 9:5; 15:16; 20:6; Exo 21:28; Lev 20:15; Zec 1:15; Eph 5:6.

Gen 3:15

ENMITY: A “war” to the “death”: Joh 15:19; Rom 7:18-23. See Lesson, Gen 3/15-enmity.

YOUR OFFSPRING (SEED): All who serve sin in the flesh (Rom 6:12,19), headed by Cain.

HERS: This “seed” = Christ. But 2 seeds also = 2 peoples. See Elp 88 re serpent. Christ, “seed of woman”, had no human father: Luk 1:35). In plural, all who serve God, headed by Seth.

The offspring of the woman: the Virgin Birth in the OT: Psa 71:6; 89:26,27; 110:3, LXX; Gen 3:15; 49:1,25; Isa 7:14; 49:1; Jer 31:22; Mic 5:1,2; 2Sa 7:14.

HE: “It” (AV). A singular seed.

The crucifixion, of course, involved the bruising of Christ’s heel.

The enmity of Genesis 3:15 analyzed:

  1. The mind of flesh (diabolos, observation) against the mind of the Spirit (revelation): Rom 8:6,7 mg; Gal 5:17.
  2. False doctrine (Psa 58:4; 140:3) against the Truth (2Co 11:3,4,13).
  3. This brings sin (Num 21:6), in contrast to obedience (Rom 7:17-23; 1Co 15:56).
  4. And the result is death , in contrast to life (Rom 6:23).
  5. A multitudinous seed, in Adam (1Co 15:22), in contrast to another multitudinous seed, in Christ (Isa 54; Eph 5:31), the “Bride”.
  6. Governmental power of the “serpent” (Rom 16:20), in contrast to governmental power of the “seed” (Rev 19:6). Cp Rev 12:14; 20:2.
  7. The singular seed — “antichrist”, Man of Sin, Antitype Cain against the singular seed of woman — Christ himself (Gal 3:16), and the Antitype Abel (2nd 2:7-9; 1Jo 3:12; 4:3).

Christ brings an end to this enmity: Heb 2:14,15; Rom 8:3; Psa 41:9.

Gen 3:16

PAINS: Or “sorrow” (as AV). Sorrow at fate of children, as Eve in Gen 4:25, bereaved of Abel. A closer affinity of mother to child. Christ the man of sorrows: Isa 53:3. Like begets like: the posterity of Adam and Eve would follow the course of their nature (Jam 1:12-15; Rom 5:12), and the outcome would be found in Gen 5: “And he died, etc. etc.”

YOUR DESIRE… FOR (TO) YOUR HUSBAND: Woman’s desire to man, Christ: Song 2:16; 6:3. Man’s preeminence over his wife: Eph 5:22-24.

DESIRE: “Longing”, as in 1Co 11.

Gen 3:17

TREE: Curse of tree: Gen 2:9n; Gal 3:13; Deu 21:23n.

BECAUSE OF YOU: “For your sake” (AV). The trials and sorrows of life make the Truth more meaningful. In Rom 8, the whole creation groans, for what?…

Gen 3:18

THORNS: A crown of thorns: Joh 18:2! Nations = thorns in side (Num 33:56; Jos 23:12-14). Thorns = human nature (Heb 6:8n), choking the word of God. Cp also parallel between thorns here and tares in Mat 13:24-30,36-43.

YOU WILL EAT… OF THE FIELD: Requiring more effort in its cultivation than the trees.

Gen 3:19

SWEAT: Christ’s sweat, as blood (Luk 22:44).

BY SWEAT… YOUR FOOD: Dignity in labor: 2nd 3:10. The slothful farmer allows thorns and weeds to grow (Pro 24:30-32). Idleness is evil: Eze 16:49.

UNTIL YOU RETURN TO THE GROUND: “Ground” = “Adam”. An irrevocable law: the cessation of life: Psa 90:7-12; Ecc 12:7.

Gen 3:20

ADAM NAMED HIS WIFE EVE: Heb “cheval”. Adam’s wife already had a name — “Ice” (Gen 2:23) — a name which fitly described her origin, for it signified “Out of man [is]”. But in view of the great redemptive promise just received, Adam evidently felt she needed a new name — one in keeping with her destiny… with the part she would play in the scheme of redemption. What more appropriate than “Cheval” — “Life”!

BECAUSE HE WOULD BECOME THE MOTHER OF ALL THE LIVING: The woman’s new name (sig “life”) described her destiny, as the mother of the redeemer (Gen 3:15). Through the woman, by a specially prepared birth, would come a son — the “seed of the woman”. He would (in some way probably only dimly perceived by Adam at this time) destroy the power of death brought by the serpent. Whereas the serpent was the “father” of death, this man-child would become the “father” of life — and his mother therefore would be the “mother of all life”. Eve was not so named until after the Fall, when she was also given the promise of a special “seed of the woman” who would bring life to all Adam and Eve’s children.

Notice Eve’s words in Gen 4:25. Cp Jerusalem, “mother of us all” (Gal 4:26).

Gen 3:21

GARMENTS (COATS): Heb “kethoneth”: Special ceremonial coats, used 4 other times in OT (Gen 37:3n). Ref to priestly garment!

SKIN (SKINS): Though AV has “skins”, the word is singular. Pointing to the one perfect sacrifice of Christ, for atonement of sin (Joh 1:29). Necessitates the shedding of blood: Heb 9:22; Gal 5:24; Rev 13:8 (the lamb). Garments were a covering for sins: Psa 32:1; Isa 61:10; Gal 3:26; Rev 19:8. Manmade systems of covering are not “suitable”!

Gen 3:22

If Adam already had immortality, this precaution was unnecessary. The result? An overpopulated world of “immortal sinners”.

Gen 3:23

Exclusion from the source of life, leading to death for Adam and his descendants: Rom 5:12; Eze 18:4,20; Job 14:7-10.

Gen 3:24

The purpose of cherubim, not prevention or closing of the way, but instead a maintenance or preservation of the way (Eze 1:4n). Here, east of Eden, was God’s immediate presence in cherubim (cp Gen 4:3,14,16; Psa 80:1-3; 99:1; Exo 25:22). Here, men brought offerings. The “flaming sword” consumed acceptable sacrifices (Elp 153; Lev 1; cp 1Ki 18:38).

God intended man to live. One sin would not frustrate His purpose. God’s honor required judgment, but His love provided an atonement.

PLACED: “Caused to dwell”. Same root as “shekinah” glory of God (see Zec 8:3n).

EAST: Or, “in front, before”. Where the “sun” rises: cp Eze 43:2; Zec 14:4; Rev 16:12.

A FLAMING SWORD: Better, “a sword-like flame”. The word of God = 2-edged sword (Heb 4:12). “Sharp sword out of mouth” (Rev 19:15). Fire sym spirit of God (Rev 4:25), also, glory and brightness of Christ and saints (Eze 1:4,13,14,26), and majesty and honor (2Pe 1:16; Dan 12:3; Mat 13:43). See Tes 64:7.

FLASHING BACK AND FORTH (WHICH TURNED EVERY WAY): Thus displaying its many faces (ie Gen 4:14).

GUARD: “Keep” (AV). Sig “protect, observe, preserve”; as other cherubim, this one “kept” the promise of salvation before man. It represented the seed of woman (Gen 3:15), Christ; also the multitudinous Christ, a guarantee of the sureness of divine purpose, covenants, and provisions for salvation.

THE WAY TO (OF) THE TREE OF LIFE: Christ is the way, truth, life (Jo 14:6), “new and living way” (Heb 10:18-22), “God’s way” (6:12), “narrow way” (Mt 7:14). Psa 16:11: “path of life… thy (God’s) presence (countenance, face)… pleasures for evermore”. The “way”: 6:12; 18:19; Exo 33:13; Psa 25:9; Isa 35:8; 40:3,14; 51:10; 59:8. In Acts, 9:2; 16:17; 19:8,23; 22:4. Ct “ways of sin”: Pro 14:12; Jer 2:18; 10:2; Jud 1:11. The hope of immortality is made accessible by our overcoming in faith: Rev 2:7; Pro 3:18.

Genesis 4

Gen 4:1

CAIN: Heb “gotten, or acquired” (AV mg). Word play between “qanah” (here) and “qanith” (“brought forth”). Poss, per Strong, Cain sig “create, erect”; thus sig “redeemer, purchaser”, or “creator, father”.

In no way did Eve lag behind her husband [cp Gen 3:20] in this expectation of the fulfillment of God’s promise of a redeemer. In fact, she was so eager for the promised deliverance that she seized upon her firstborn as the “seed of the woman”.

The name “Cain” has usually been considered to derive from the Hebrew “qanah” — so as to signify “gotten, or acquired” (as in the AV margin). But more modern scholarship makes a connection with another Hebrew word, “qanith” — which is now understood to signify “give birth to” or “create”. The note in the New English Translation says, “Here is another sound play (paronomasia) on a name. The sound of the verb ‘qanith’ (‘I have created’) reflects the sound of the name Cain in Hebrew and gives meaning to it… There are two homonymic verbs with this spelling: one meaning “obtain, acquire” and the other meaning “create” (see Gen 14:19,22; Deu 32:6; Psa 139:13; Pro 8:22). The latter fits this context very well. Eve has CREATED a man!” [The passages listed in the NET note may be much better translated in light of this recently-discovered meaning of “qanith”. For example, Pro 8:22 reads in the KJV: “The LORD POSSESSED me [Wisdom] in the beginning of his way, before his works of old” — this uses the old meaning of ‘qanah’ (to get, or acquire), but surely misses the point; the context of Pro 8 is the Creation! The NIV, using the new scholarship, translates the same passage: “The LORD BROUGHT ME FORTH as the first of his works, before his deeds of old.” And now ‘Wisdom’ is seen, rightly, as the first of Yahweh’s “creations”!]

The KJV has Eve saying, “I have gotten a man from the LORD”. But the NIV, and the NET, give us a fuller meaning. Now Eve may be seen to say, “I have created a Yahweh-man!” — we might say, ‘God manifest in the flesh’ (1Ti 3:16) or ‘God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself’ (2Co 5:18).

This fits the context very well: it portrays Eve as a “Creator”; she has sought to be “like God” (Gen 3:5) — and now — in her mind — she has finally succeeded: just like God, she has created a man! And the man she has created will truly redeem men from the curse of the serpent.

But, alas! It was a false hope. Eve’s firstborn proved himself to be instead a son of the serpent, by his enmity against another “seed of the woman”, his brother Abel. This enmity culminated in the murder of his righteous brother. Thus Cain, like his “father” the old serpent, showed himself “a murderer from the beginning” (John 8:44; 1Jo 3:12). He was not to be a “creator” of life, but a bringer of death.

Gen 4:2

Gen 4:3

“There is a way that seems right to man, but the end thereof is death” (Pro 14:12).

IN THE COURSE (PROCESS) OF TIME: Indicates a set time to offer sacrifice (cp Gen 3:24n).

OFFERING: “Minchah” (Lev 2:1). A voluntary, bloodless offering, and thus a denial of Heb 9:22 (“Without shedding of blood… no remission of sins”: cp Mat 26:28; Job 31:33). A mistaken belief that works may replace grace of God. A wrong to make God the receiver when He alone can give (Act 9:25). The cherubim of Gen 3:24 should have shown Cain the right course, but it did not.

Gen 4:4

A more perfect offering: Heb 11:4. The detail here implies that specific rules had been given (ie 3:24).

FAT PORTIONS: “Crucify the flesh” (Gal 5:24). A dedication of the blood/life: Lev 17:11.

FIRSTBORN: Firstborn in Law: Num 18:15-17; Exo 13:2. Double inheritance: Deu 21:15. Priesthood: Num 8:4-18. Authority: Gen 49:3; 2Ch 21:3. Christ was “firstborn” (Col 1:15-19). We are ecclesia of firstborn (Heb 12:23; Rev 14:4; Jam 1:17,19).

Gen 4:5

Cain, the choice of men: strong, clever, handsome — no doubt like Esau and Saul. But God chose Jacob and David and Abel instead. Cain, desired by Eve as the seed (v 1n), grows up spoiled, selfish, and proud, due to attention lavished on him. Not pliable in God’s hands. And thus envious of his brother.

“A way that seems right to man, but the end thereof is death” (Pro 14:12). A stubborn refusal to do right: Pro 21:27; 15:8.

ANGRY (VERY WROTH): The first religious controversy! Even to hate one’s brother is to commit murder (1Jo 3:15).

DOWNCAST (HIS COUNTENANCE FELL): Cp Neh 6:16.

Gen 4:7

WILL YOU NOT BE ACCEPTED?: “Have the excellency” (AV mg), ie the status for a firstborn son under the Law.

SIN: “Chattah”, a sin-offering (Num 6:11,14,16). In the Pentateuch, these lie at the door of the tabernacle or temple. Here, could refer to east gate or door of garden (WHGT 58). A sin-bearer, or animal for sacrifice, could have been procured from Abel — but Cain was too proud. (Cp Christ is his death, providing a sin-covering even for those wicked men who plotted his death.)

DESIRES: Cp idea in Gen 3:16.

YOU MUST MASTER IT (THOU SHALT RULE OVER HIM): Either (1) You will/should have the upper hand over sinful impulses, or (2) You desire the mastery of your brother, i.e. the office of the firstborn.

“It all began with one small wrong act that Cain was very able to put right. Cain offered a sacrifice of vegetables instead of the sacrifice of an animal and then became jealous that Abel’s sacrifice was favoured by God while his own sacrifice wasn’t. It was here that the LORD intervened and warned Cain what would happen if he did not put his actions right. God said, ‘Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.’

“Cain’s decision was to stay bitter. To ease his problem, Cain made a bigger one by killing his brother. Now Cain had two problems. He had offered an unacceptable sacrifice and not put it right, and had murdered his brother.

“When the LORD confronted Cain about the death of Abel, he again tried to cover it up by lying.

“If Cain had just taken God’s advice and put the first problem right, the rest of his sins would never have happened. Sin desires to have all of us, but we must master it. Let us not fall into the same trap as Cain and add sin to sin until it masters us” (RP).

Gen 4:8

LET’S GO OUT TO THE FIELD: Not in some mss; not in AV. But there is strong textual support for such a phrase: the LXX, Syriac Peshitta, Latin Vulgate, Samaritan Pentateuch, and Jerusalem Targum (ADI 13). Cain is luring his brother, deceiving him.

Cain killed his brother after “church” was over! The beginning of the continuing conflict between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman: Mat 23:35; Jud 1:11; Heb 12:24; 1Jo 3:12.

Gen 4:9

WHERE IS… ABEL?: Cain had evidently buried the body of his brother (cp v 10).

I DON’T KNOW: The first (human) liar as well as the first murderer: Joh 8:44.

Gen 4:10

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?: As in Gen 3:13r.

YOUR BROTHER’S BLOOD CRIES OUT… FROM GROUND: The dead do not literally talk. Only their memory calls them back to mind, after manner of “souls under altar” (Rev 6:9,10; cp Heb 11:4; 12:24).

Gen 4:11

FROM THE GROUND (EARTH): That is, to be an exile: vv 12,16. Cp fate of Esau: Gen 27:39n. And cp the curse upon Jewry for the murder of Jesus: Mat 23:35; Deu 28:15-24. (See Pink 70).

Gen 4:13

A confession of sin. (But Cain seems more concerned with punishment than crime.) Thus Cain limits God’s power, by ignoring His offer of mercy (v 7n).

Gen 4:14

PRESENCE: Lit “faces” (always plural in Heb): Elp 148; Gen 3:24n.

WHOEVER FINDS ME WILL KILL ME: There were prob already many descendants of Adam and Eve in the earth, some 100 or so years after the Creation. For Cain, “No peace for the wicked” (Isa 57:20). He was afraid of poss kinsmen/redeemers who would try to kill him. Cain’s act set a precedent that others might follows. Cain’s fate: a type of Israel’s punishment of scattering, after they killed Christ.

Gen 4:15

PUT A MARK ON: “Appointed a sign for”. Did Cain now avail himself of the previous offer (v 7) of a sacrifice, in Eden, God’s “city of refuge”?

MARK: Making him easily distinguishable by appearance — like Jews? Or, a “place”, like the cities of refuge, where Cain will be safe from the avenger of blood. (But, after a while, Cain grows restless and leaves to build his own city.)

The story is told of two brothers, convicted of stealing sheep, who were branded on the forehead with the letters ST, to indicate “sheep thief.” The one couldn’t bear the stigma, became bitter, and moved away. Eventually he died and was forgotten. The other brother chose a different course. He said, “I can’t run from what I did, so I’ll stay here and win back the respect of my neighbors and myself.” As the years passed, he built a solid reputation for integrity. One day a stranger saw him, now an old man, with the letters on his forehead. He asked a townsman what they signified. “It happened a long time ago,” said the villager. “I’ve forgotten the particulars, but I think the letters are an abbreviation for ‘saint’.”

Cain too was a marked man who, like that first brother in the story, never thought beyond the severity of his punishment to the severity of his sin. He didn’t realize that his “brand” was a blessing as well as a curse. It held in check the vengeance of his fellowmen so that he wouldn’t be killed. God was granting Cain an opportunity to acknowledge his wrong, to plead for mercy, and to wipe out his reputation as a murderer. How tragic that he chose not to! (See Lesson, Scarlet letter, the).

Gen 4:16

CAIN WENT OUT: Cp Jon 1:3.

PRESENCE: “Faces”.

CAIN WENT OUT FROM THE LORD’S PRESENCE: A divine sanctuary (perh an altar to God). If Cain had remained there, there would have been protection for him from any “avenger of blood” (v.15). But Cain decides to go out from God’s protecting presence, showing his self-dependence (just as in the earlier matter of sacrifice) rather than relying upon God. In effect, he builds his own “temple” as well as his own city.

NOD: Only mention in Bible. Sig “wandering, exile”, from rt “to waver, to flee, to disappear”. Location unknown. To fulfill v 12.

EAST OF EDEN: For “east”, see Gen 3:24n and Lesson: Eden.

Gen 4:17

“Cain’s Wife: a Second Look”: Compass 9:121. A survey of genetic difficulties with “inbreeding” — and suggestion that these problems were far less severe in earlier times.

ENOCH: “Dedicated”, in this case prob to a false god. Was Enoch destined to be the high priest of a temple city, dedicated to an apostate religious worship — ie, the “way of Cain” (Jud 1:11)?

CAIN WAS THEN BUILDING A CITY: Abel already had a “city” (Heb 11:16).

HE NAMED IT AFTER HIS SON: Cp Psa 49:11.

Gen 4:18

IRAD: “Wild ass”; a man of flesh.

MEHUJAEL: “Smitten of God”.

METHUSHAEL: “Man of God”, a religious sort.

Gen 4:19

LAMECH MARRIED TWO WOMEN: First instance of polygamy. “From the beginning it was not so” (Mat 19:8).

ADAH: “Adorned”, in beauty or self-glorification.

Gen 4:20

Cain’s seed, the “seed of the serpent”, made their names known in the fields of politics, “education”, city life, “civilization”, permissiveness, “culture”, popular music. But all with no real God! Cp the world today. The pre-flood apostasy “said to God, ‘Depart from us'” (Job 22:15-17).

JABAL: “Produce”, i.e. pomp, pageantry.

FATHER: Figuratively, organizer, founder, master, patron, businessman. “Father” = “leader” (Gen 4:21; 45:8; 2Ki 5:13; 2Ch 4:16; Isa 22:21).

RAISE LIVESTOCK (HAVE CATTLE): Was the simple work of Abel now corrupted into a large, profitable business?

Gen 4:21

JUBAL: “Joyful music”; cp “Jubilee”. A “band leader” of renown!

Gen 4:22

TUBAL-CAIN: “Flowing forth from Cain”.

TOOLS: Including weapons? See v 23.

NAAMAH: “Pleasant”. All women of Cain’s line have names reflecting outward appearance, refinement, luxury.

Gen 4:23

A minor bruise brings a fatal retaliation. The RV of v 23 reads “I have slain a man for wounding me and a young man for bruising me.” This reading seems likely due to the boastfulness of v 24. Also the words for “man” and “young man” are different, so it is possible that Lamech killed at least two people (maybe wiping out a whole family). Lamech’s boast was that he was greater than God, who pronounced a mere seven-fold judgment against any who sought vengeance on Cain (v 15). “But I take vengeance 77-fold if need be!” LXX reads “70 times 7”. Cp Peter’s question, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Till seven times?” Christ’s answer: “Until seventy times seven” (Mat 18:21,22): ‘Let the gentle persistence of your forgiveness at least match the opposite murderous attitude of power-drunk Lamech.’

Gen 4:24

Lamech boasts that he no longer needs the divine protection afforded his ancestor Cain (v 15). Lamech is proud of his son Tubal-cain, a maker of weapons (v 22). Ct Mat 18:22: Christ forgives 77 times. Also cp Dan 9:24 (“70 sevens”).

Gen 4:25

SETH: “Sheth”, “appointed or put”. If Abel typifies Jesus in sacrifice, Seth typifies him in resurrection — a “son” to replace the one who was slain.

Gen 4:26

Now begins the separation between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman.

ENOSH: “Frail”. Used of man, implying weakness, humility (Psa 8:4; 90:3; 103:15).

TO CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD: Or, as AV mg, “to call themselves by the name of the LORD”. The beginning of the “ecclesia”. Men calling themselves the “sons of God/Yahweh”. (2) Or, to plead for the Savior hitherto denied them (Gen 3:15; 4:1; etc).

Genesis 5

Gen 5:1

Gen 5 is like a walk through the cemetery, as the record of the gravestones testify to the condemnation because of sin. It is valuable to color in every reference to “and he died.” All the generations were affected by the law of sin and death. So with monotonous regularity this statement, “and he died”, is made, emphasizing the hopelessness of the human race in spite of the long lives lived. Inevitably the end awaits even Methuselah. This is the theme song of Life — the only significant exception being Enoch — a wonderful reminder that the sting of death can be defeated.

“This is the book of… Adam” (Gen 5:1). Contrast this with: “[This is] the book of… Jesus Christ” (Mat 1:1). The book of Adam’s family tree and the book of the genealogy of Christ form a striking contrast. One is a record of death, the other of life. Gen 5 has been called the “obituary chapter” of the Bible, for time after time we read the doleful words “and he died”. On the other hand, Matthew, in giving the genealogy of Jesus, constantly repeats the phrase, “…and [he] begot”. Although the people in the line of Christ did eventually die, the word “death” is never mentioned in Mat 1. By our sinful nature we are in Adam’s book on death, but by our spiritual “new birth” we appear in Christ’s living register of the redeemed.

The story is told of a man whose name was printed in the obituary column of a daily paper by mistake. Greatly disturbed, he went to the newspaper office and exclaimed, “This is terrible! Your error will cause me no end of embarrassment and may even mean a loss of business. How could you do such a thing?” The editor expressed regrets, but the man remained angry and unreasonable. Finally the editor said in disgust, “Cheer up, fellow, I’ll put your name in the birth column tomorrow and give you a fresh start! How’s that for a good deal?”

That’s what baptism into the name of Christ can do for us!

Gen 5: Long life span, Gen 1:7n. Also, curse on Adam and posterity may have had a cumulative effect. Long life facilitated transmission of knowledge, ie history from the lips of the very participants. Note repetitions: “He died… he died… he died…” An inevitable sentence. The chronology of significance of names in chapter: “Man, made in God’s image, changed to misery, laments. Blessed EL comes down, to teach. Death brings to weary comfort and rest.”

WRITTEN ACCOUNT: AV “Book of the generations of…” Cp book of generations of Jesus Christ in Mat 1:1.

ADAM: “Red, earth”. Cp 1Co 15:47.

LIKENESS OF GOD: Ct with v 3: “in his own likeness”.

The Purpose of God Revealed in the Names of the First Ten Sons of God: * Adam: Man. * Seth: Appointed. * Enos: Miserable. * Cainan: The object of mercy. * Mahalaleel: He who is with the mighty God. * Jared: Shall descend. * Enoch: The consecrated one. * Methuselah: His death shall send forth. * Lamech: When smitten. * Noah: Rest. * Reading the meanings in order: Man, appointed (to be) miserable, (yet) the object of mercy. He who is with the mighty God shall descend, (even) the consecrated one. His death shall send forth, when smitten, rest.

IN HIS OWN LIKENESS: Ct v 1: “in the likeness of God”. Adam was created in God’s image, but after his sin, his son was born in Adam’s image (and not God’s image, at least in the same sense as originally). “Shapen in iniquity” (Psa 51:5).

“There is no reason why we cannot think of God every minute. There is no reason why we cannot have His will and presence, and the love of Him, always in the forefront of our consciousness. Gen 5:24

WALKED: Cp Gen 6:9.

HE WAS NO MORE: Lit, “he was not” — ie he simply ceased to exist. “Not found” (Heb 11:5).

GOD TOOK HIM AWAY: Enoch was taken away from the impending judgment and the increasing wickedness — just as saints were “taken away” (Mat 24:40,41). “By faith, Enoch was translated, not to see death” (Heb 11:5). After 365 years Enoch did die — typ, in sacrifice (VH 58). 365 days (cp 365 years/a completed cycle): “Like the shining sun of righteousness (Mal 4:2), he completed his course” (HPM). Abel typifies sacrifice of Christ; Enoch typ reward at 2nd coming.

Gen 5:25

The first (partial) fulfillment of Gen 3:15. Typ Christ, who will bring true rest: Heb 4:1,9.

NOAH: “Rest, comfort”. Noah is typical of all righteous, who are saved by water while the world around them is perishing.

HE WILL COMFORT US: Typ Christ, who will bring true rest (Mat 11:28,29; Isa 11:10).

CAUSED BY THE GROUND…: “Out of the ground which the Lord hath cursed this one shall…” (RSV). The deliverer of mankind (ie Noah, Christ) must be one of mankind — sharing in the effects of the curse.

CURSED: They were looking for the renewal of the earth from curse (ie, Psa 104:30).

Gen 5:32

Genesis 6

Gen 6:1

Gen 6: “The glory of redemption notwithstanding the wickedness of society is revealed. The ch repeats the story of the transgression of Eden. It is brought about by the adulterous union of the races which leads to the greatest calamity history has known. But the flood is not only an act of judgment, but also of mercy. Left to himself, man would have brought destruction anyhow (v 13), and would have involved the righteous in the calamity. Divine intervention prevented this. Notice the three inspections by the divine eyes: vv 3, 5,12, and cp with the three inspections of the leprous house (Lev 14:33-35). So the world that then was perished, and so will present day society. For that reason, we keep apart from all the contamination of a godless world in every respect, and set our hearts to follow the example of righteous Noah” (GEM).

Gen 6: The Flood. Reason?: Apostasy from the Truth. “Un-creation” and “Re-creation”! Pre-Flood cities: Halley 72. “The like figure whereunto baptism also now saves us” (1Pe 3:21).

Gen 6:2

Angels do not marry: Mat 22:30; Luk 20:35,36.

SONS OF GOD: The sons, or children, of God are those who take God’s name upon themselves: see Gen 4:26; Deu 14:1; 1Jo 3:1,2,10; Jer 10:20; Ezek 16:21; Joh 11:52; Hos 1:10; Rom 9:6-8; Joh 1:12,13; Rom 8:14,19; Mat 5:9,45. Note: it was man whom God decided to destroy, not angels.

BEAUTIFUL: “Tob” = ‘good’, sw as “good for food” in Gen 3:6. The lust of the flesh.

THEY MARRIED ANY (THEY TOOK THEM WIVES OF ALL): Rather than marrying only in the Lord: Deu 7:3,4; 1Co 7:39. This association with the world led to respectability and worldly compromise. Cp Israel’s later corruption by the Moabites (Num 25). Enoch condemns such marriages with aliens (Jud 1:14,15), and is rewarded by God for his faithful obedience (Gen 5:24; Heb 11:5,26). All the mingled seed of Seth and Cain was destroyed by the flood (Gen 7:21-23).

Gen 6:3

120 YEARS: Noah’s sons were already married (v 18). At Flood, the oldest was already 100 (Gen 5:32; 7:6). This allows only 40-60 years for the building of the ark (Sh 84:11:24).

Gen 6:4

NEPHILIM: A race of giants (Num 13:33). “Giants” (AV). From root “to fall”: (1) men of violence (vv 12,13: “to fall upon”), or (2) “fallen ones”, ie apostates.

HEROES: “Mighty men” (AV). “Ha-gibborim”. Mighty men of v 11; Gen 4:17. As Korah, etc (Num 16:2). After flood, a similar such man: Nimrod, renowned for natural strength, leadership, achievement (Gen 10:8-10).

MEN OF RENOWN: “Enosh ha-shem”.

Gen 6:5

Notice: God doesn’t blame the devil!

THE LORD SAW (GOD SAW): Ct with v 2: the sons of God “saw”!

Gen 6:6

GRIEVED: “Repented” in AV. May sig a change of purpose also (ie Exo 32:14; 1Sa 15:11n; Deu 18:7,8; Jon 3:10). “I have decreed to replace man with Noah’s family.”

Usually such an expression means: to have one’s request granted (cp Gen 19:19; 32:5; 33:10,15; 34:11). So what was Noah’s petition? (1) For the salvation of his family; (2) for further time to allow for the repentance of others?

CYPRESS WOOD (GOPHER WOOD): Wood, flesh, cut down in sacrifice (cp crucifixion, tree) to provide a covering (kopher/protection) from the waters of death. Christ, the “root” (Isa 53:2) was “cut off” (Dan 9:26). Christ’s sacrifice: “by which the world is crucified” (Gal 6:14).

ROOMS: “Kinnim”. Heb “nests” (AV mg): cp Psa 84:3,4n.

COAT: “Pitch” (AV). Heb “kepher” or “kopher” = covering, or atonement. Gal 3:26-29.

Gen 6:15

The common Heb cubit = approx 18 inches. Thus, measures as follows: * 300 cubits (AV) = 450 feet * 50 cubits (AV) = 75 feet * 30 cubits (AV) = 45 feet. Approx size = 14,000 tons. Man constructed no larger ship than the ark until the “Eturia” was built in 1884.

Gen 6:16

ROOF: “Window” (AV). An opening for light (NIV mg), covered by some translucent substance. Ct Gen 8:6. Or left open underneath overhead roof, for ventilation — a continuous opening around vessel of a cubit (approx 18 inches) width. Through this roof Noah and his family could look up (Col 3:2)! Cp Joh 8:12 (Christ = light).

DOOR: Repr Christ (Joh 10:7,9; 14:6); there is only one way into the ark of safety (1Pe 3:20,21; Act 4:11,12).

Gen 6:17

UNDER THE HEAVENS: A phrase suggesting the universality of Yahweh’s judgement: Gen 6:17; Exo 17:14; Deu 7:24; 9:14; 25:19; 29:20; 2Ki 14:27. The two NT references (Acts 4:12; Col 1:23) expand the theme to show that the Father is indeed concerned with salvation for all mankind.

BREATH: “Ruach”, ref both man and beast. “Ruach” is translated “wind” in Gen 8:1; Psa 1:4; 104:29,30.

Gen 6:18

COVENANT: “Berith”, first used here. YOU WILL ENTER THE ARK (COME INTO THE ARK): Noah was saved by own ark; Christ was saved by own sacrifice.

BRING: Noah “brought”, or received, into ark what God had gathered (v 20). (All earth then had a similar, temperate climate. Thus all species were perhaps distributed over all earth, and could easily be assembled in one place.)

GO INTO ARK: In AV, “Come!” God was in the Ark: Isa 26:20n; see Gen 7:16. Cp Col 3:3 (“Hid with Christ”); 2 Co 6:17: separated from world. Christ IS the “ark” of salvation. In him, God says, “Come unto me” (Mat 11:28,29; cp Isa 26:20,21).

YOUR WHOLE FAMILY (ALL THY HOUSE): Act 16:31.

BECAUSE I HAVE FOUND YOU RIGHTEOUS IN THIS GENERATION: “You” here is singular: clearly implying that Noah was the ONLY righteous man. In this he was a type of Christ, and his sons and the rest of his family — who were saved thru him — typify the rest of us!

THE LORD: Yahweh. Concerning animals: “Elohim”. Concerning man: “Yahweh”!

THE LORD SHUT HIM IN: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Pro 18:10). A divine selection and protection. But of course others are left out (Mat 25:10).

Open doors: for restored communion (2Ch 29:3); deliverance from prison (Act 5:19); surrender (Rev 3:20); service (1Co 16:9); and opportunity (Rev 3:8). Shut doors: for safety (Gen 7:16); privacy and communion (Mat 6:6); faith and prayer (2Ki 4:5,21,33); self-sufficiency (Rev 3:20); and separation and rejection (Mat 25:10).

FORTY DAYS: The period of probation and/or judgment.

THE WATERS INCREASED: Or, “prevailed” (AV). God’s judgments prevailed (cp Jon 2:5). A contrast between water and earth.

THEY LIFTED (BARE UP) THE ARK: Christ, our “ark of salvation”, was lifted up: Joh 3:14; 8:28. The waters brought both death and life (2Co 2:15; 1Pe 3:20).

Gen 8:1

“Is it about oxen that God is concerned?” (1Co 9:9,10).

GOD REMEMBERED NOAH…: “You couldn’t feel much more isolated than Noah and his family must have felt as they floated about in the ark for a year and ten days. They lived in semi-darkness with only themselves and the animals for company. They had no view of the world outside — except for a small window at the top of the ark. And if they had looked out, most of what they would have seen would have been water. But this isolation, while it must have been unpleasant in many ways, was for the saving of all who were on the ark. Even so, they must have felt alone and forgotten during much of that time.

“But God doesn’t forget. We read that He ‘remembered’ Noah and all who were with him in the ark.

“Sometimes we can feel isolated, alone or forgotten by the world around us. Maybe we feel that we have not been recognised as we should as we worked for the Lord. But we can take comfort in what God said about Noah. God will remember us and the time will come when we will find release from the situation we are in.

“In the meantime we can be sure that our trials are designed to aid in our salvation.

“Have hope.

“God cares” (RP).

Gen 8:8

DOVE: “Yonah”. The form of the Holy Spirit: Mat 3:16n. A clean bird, only one used in sacrifice (Lev 1:14). Harmlessness (Mat 10:16), the multitude of righteous (Son 1:15; 2:14; 4:1…). The “lamb” among bird life.

TO SEE IF THE WATERS HAD RECEDED (ABATED): The dove will settle only in dry and clean places.

Gen 8:9

NO PLACE TO SET ITS FEET: A parable of the righteous, who find no lasting place of rest in this wicked world.

BROUGHT IT BACK… IN THE ARK: “The LORD protects the simplehearted; when I was in great need, he saved me. Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you” (Psa 116:6,7). Tired, and with no place to set its feet or lay its head, the dove found its way back to the Ark of safety, and Noah stretched out his hand to receive it back to himself. The “father” looked for, and then received back to his bosom the “prodigal son”, who — weary with looking for but finding no resting place — returns to its home!

TOGETHER WITH HIS SONS… HIS WIFE… HIS SONS’ WIVES: Family life was important then, now, and in future: Eph 6:1-3; Mic 4:4; Zec 12:12; Psa 68:8; Mat 19:29.

Gen 8:20

Vv 20-22: Divine promise to Noah.

ALL THE CLEAN ANIMALS: That is, all the clean sacrificial animals.

BURNT OFFERINGS: Note: a formal system of worship by sacrifice at this early date (see Lev 1:1-17: requirements of burnt offering).

Gen 8:21

PLEASING AROMA (SWEET SAVOUR): AV mg: “a savour of rest”. The word “rest” is related to “Noah” (cp Gen 5:29).

NEVER AGAIN WILL I CURSE: Or, better, “I will not add to the curse…” — ie of Gen 3:17. The same curse remains, but no worse is imposed.

EVIL: Psa 58:3; Pro 20:9; Ecc 7:20; Jer 10:23; 17:9; Rom 3:20.

NEVER AGAIN WILL I DESTROY ALL: Although the earth will be purged with fire: 2Pe 3. But the earth will not literally be burned up: 2Pe 3:6-13n. Cp Ecc 1:4; Psa 148:6; Isa 45:18.
