Isaiah 56

Isa 56:1

Isa 56: The fulfillment of Isa 55:6,7: “Seek the LORD”: now eunuchs and Gentiles seek the LORD at Jerusalem…

MY SALVATION IS CLOSE AT HAND: The gospel = the power of God unto salvation (Rom 1:16,17) — to Jew AND to Gentile!

Isa 56:3

The “foreigner who has bound himself to the LORD” (Isa 56:3) suggests the Gibeonites, willing to be hewers of wood and drawers of water (Jos 9:27). “There are indications that in Hezekiah’s time the temple staff of such Nethinim — that is, those given or appointed to service of Yahweh — was augmented by the capture of Assyrian and Egyptian prisoners, and also by the gifts of slaves which neighboring countries sent to Hezekiah after the Assyrian overthrow (Isa 14:1-3; 45:14; 18:7; 2Ch 32:23; Psa 76:11)” (WIsa).

THE LORD WILL SURELY EXCLUDE ME FROM HIS PEOPLE: As in Deu 23:3. But cp the eunuch’s question: “What hinders me?” (Act 8:36).

EUNUCH: Christ was a “eunuch” (Isa 53:8)!

I AM ONLY A DRY TREE: But God makes the dry tree to flourish (Eze 17:24; Psa 52:8), while unfruitful Israel is caused to wither away (Mar 11:17,20).

Isa 56:4

PLEASES… HOLD FAST: Heb “chaphets” (as in Hephzibah) and “chazaq” (as in Hezekiah).

Isa 56:5

AN EVERLASTING NAME: Implying resurrection.

Isa 56:6

FOREIGNERS: The Ethiopian eunuch (Act 8) was a foreigner as well as a eunuch.

Isa 56:7

A HOUSE OF PRAYER: Not just a house where prayer is offered — which is true enough — but also a “house” (a spiritual house) built up by and consisting of prayers offered by many individuals. With our prayers we “build” this “house” in which God dwells.

ALL NATIONS: Not just Gentiles along with Jews, but “eunuchs” as well (v 4)!

Isa 56:8

I WILL GATHER STILL OTHERS: “Other sheep, not of this fold” (Joh 10:16).

Isa 56:9

Even in the midst of Hezekiah’s stirring reforms, there is described here the utter corruption of priests and prophets. This carries on into Isa 57, with descriptions of the gross Canaanite idolatries (introduced by Ahaz).

COME, ALL YOU BEASTS OF THE FIELD: One of the consequences of Israel’s rejection of God was the bringing of Gentile “beasts” upon the nation. Cp Jer 12:9.

Isa 56:10

The “watchmen” of Israel: blind, ignorant, dumb, slumbering, drunken.

DOGS: Cp the grievous wolves, not sparing the flock (Act 20:29-31).

Isa 56:11

EACH SEEKS HIS OWN GAIN: “Hirelings” — not shepherds — of the flock (Joh 10:13).

Isaiah 51

Isa 51:1

ROCK… QUARRY: The tomb in which Christ was buried, and from which he arose on the 3rd day — this being the “birth” of the spiritual nation of Israel. From these “stones” God raises up “children” (Mat 3:9)!

Isa 51:2

ABRAHAM… SARAH: Poss // with v 1: Abraham = the rock, and Sarah = the pit. As if the two ends of the tunnel under Zion were named after these two characters, and their joining together was the salvation of Israel (Wordsworth, cited by WIsa 442)! And a ref also to spiritual Israel, the true children of Abraham and Sarah (Gal 3:29).

ONE… MANY: Out of one comes many! The cornerstone of God’s call to Abraham: “I will make you into a great nation” (Gen 12:2). “I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted” (Gen 13:16). “You will be the father of many nations” (Gen 17:4,5). “I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore” (Gen 22:17).

Isa 51:3

ZION: In the symbolism of this ch, Zion is equated with Sarah (as in Gal 4:22-31).

DESERTS… EDEN… WASTELANDS… GARDEN: Re Sarah, a picture of the barren woman becoming fruitful (Isa 54)! Similar also to Isa 40:1; 52:9.

Isa 51:6

HEAVENS WILL VANISH LIKE SMOKE…: The passing away of the old Mosaic system (Psa 102:26; Heb 1:12).

THE EARTH WILL WEAR OUT LIKE A GARMENT: To be replaced by an incomparably better garment — Christ, whom believers may “put on” (Gal 3:27; Eph 4:24; Col 3:10).

Isa 51:9

ARM OF THE LORD: Isa 40:10; cp Isa 53:1; 63:5.

RAHAB: Sig lit “pride” or “boasting”. (1) Egypt, in Psa 87:4; 89:10; Isa 30:7. (2) Apparently, a mythological sea-monster in Isa 51:9; Job 9:13; 26:12. Poss ref to the crocodile of the Nile, sym of proud Egypt and her gods. See Lesson, Rahab (Egypt). Poss ref to the chaos monster at the time of creation, to Egypt at the time of the Exodus, or to a fusion of both.

Isa 51:10

Isa 51:10

WHO MADE A ROAD IN THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA: Ref to the Exodus, and v 11 to the new Exodus, the return of the exiles from Babylon. See also Isa 35:9; 11:15,16.

Isa 51:11

EVERLASTING JOY WILL CROWN THEIR HEADS: Or, poss, their “Great Head”, ie Christ! The Heb plural of greatness and majesty.

“Israel will sing the song of Moses, and the song of the Lamb, who will have given them such a mighty deliverance from all their enemies. Being now ‘the ransomed of the Lord, they shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads.’ The prophet ‘like unto Moses,’ mightier than Joshua, and ‘greater than Solomon’, will conduct them into the Holy Land; and, having delivered to them the New Covenant, will ‘settle them after their old estates.’ Having ‘wrought with them for his own name’s sake,’ and by them as his ‘battle-axe and weapons of war’ subdued the nations, and brought them to his holy mountain, he will ‘accept them there,’ and ‘there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land,’ as one nation and one kingdom under Shiloh ‘serve the Lord God’ ” (Elp 405,406).

Isa 51:13

Do not forget that God — the Creator of all things — is always in control: cp Isa 40:22; 42:5; 44:24; 45:12. Thus all testing situations are put in their proper perspective.

Isa 51:16

I HAVE PUT MY WORDS IN YOUR MOUTH: Spoken of Moses (Deu 18:18), who brought about the first great deliverance from slavery.

HEAVENS… EARTH: The founding, or planting, of a new creation, patterned after Sinai (Exo 19:5,6).

Isa 51:17

AWAKE, AWAKE! RISE UP, O JERUSALEM: The city of Jerusalem awakes from the stupor of drunkenness, brought on by God’s judgments (cp vv 21-23).

Isa 51:19

THESE DOUBLE CALAMITIES: In Hezekiah’s day: Assyrian invasion AND the king’s deadly disease!

RUIN AND DESTRUCTION, FAMINE AND SWORD: “The catalogue of sufferings… is hopelessly irrelevant to those who had had 70 years of settled prosperity in Babylon. And if the ref be to Jerusalem, then only the first of these 4 items was relevant in the time of Cyrus” (WIsa 446,447). But quite appropriate to what befell Israel and Judah in the days of Sennacherib and Hezekiah.

Isa 51:20

YOUR SONS HAVE FAINTED; THEY LIE AT THE HEAD OF EVERY STREET: Tragedy as repeated in Rev (Rev 11:8; cp Psa 79:2,3).

Isa 51:23

The death-warrant of Nineveh is signed by the prophet of the LORD.

Isaiah 52

Isa 52:1

CLOTHE… GARMENTS: New garments indicating a new status, a new covenant (as High Priest, other priests: Exo 28:2,40). Clothing sym way of life, to be kept clean, as a “wedding garment” (Mat 22:11-13). Inner beauty, not as whited sepulchres of Pharisees (Mat 23:25-28; Ecc 3:11). “Let your priests be clothed with righteousness” (Psa 132:9). “I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and diadem” (Job 29:14). “Put on the new man… righteousness, true holiness” (Eph 4:24). “Be clothed with humility” (1Pe 5:5). “Whole armor of God…” (Eph 6). “Righteousness, girdle of loins; faithfulness, girdle of reins” (Isa 11:5). “Clothed with house from heaven” (2Co 5:2,3). “Girt with golden girdle” (Rev 1:13).

GARMENTS: Obtained from the shorn sheep (Isa 53:7).

JERUSALEM THE HOLY CITY: Rev 21:2.

THE UNCIRCUMCISED AND DEFILED WILL NOT ENTER YOU AGAIN: A ref to Assyrian soldiers garrisoned in the Temple area: “Ahaz took some of the things from the temple of the LORD and from the royal palace and from the princes and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him” (2Ch 28:21). 2Ch 28:21. Lit, “divided up a portion of the temple” — giving it to the Assyrian soldiers as a place to rest and reside. Cp 2Ki 16:18. (A similar policy was followed by the Assyrians with other vassal nations; cp also the Roman garrison next to the Temple in NT times.) Cp idea, Isa 63:18; 64:11; Psa 74:3-8; 79:1; Isa 7:13; 11:9; 52:1; Mic 5:5.

Isa 52:2

SHAKE OFF YOUR DUST: Sym the curse of Adam (Gen 3:19).

CHAINS ON YOUR NECK: Chains of slavery (ie Act 12:7). Could also ref bondage of laws, rules, etc (Act 15:10).

Isa 52:3

YOU WERE SOLD FOR NOTHING: Sold because of your sins: ie Isa 50:1. Cp Paul: “I am carnal, sold under sin” (Rom 7:14,24).

WITHOUT MONEY YOU WILL BE REDEEMED: “Justified FREELY by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Rom 3:24). Cp Isa 45:13.

Isa 52:6

MY PEOPLE WILL KNOW MY NAME: They will be as slaves happily acknowledging the name of their new Master (cp Rev 14:1).

Isa 52:7

BRING GOOD NEWS: Cp Luk 8:1: “Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.” And Paul appropriates the same words to himself: Rom 10:15 — where “feet of HIM” becomes “feet of THEM”.

YOUR GOD REIGNS!: When a new king was enthroned, his followers would give this shout. Other examples of this enthronement formula: 2Sa 15:10; 1Ki 1:11,13,18; 2Ki 9:13. The LORD is an eternal king, but here he is pictured as a victorious warrior who establishes His rule from Zion: Isa 24:23; Psa 47:7,8; all of Psa 93-100.; Rev 19:6.

Isa 52:8

WATCHMEN: Like Simeon, looking for the Messiah (Luk 2): “My eyes have seen your salvation” (Luk 2:30). The “song” of Isa 52:9,10 here // Luk 2:25-38. [Note: at the time of return from Babylonian captivity, there were no watchmen and no towers!]

LIFT UP THEIR VOICES… SEE IT WITH THEIR OWN EYES: Respectively, the watchmen calling to one another at night, and actually seeing one another in the day.

SEE IT WITH THEIR OWN EYES: Cp Joh 9:1-7: the man born blind, healed by Jesus!

Isa 52:9

YOU RUINS OF JERUSALEM: The countryside around Jerusalem, wasted and ruined by the Assyrian army.

Isa 52:11

VESSELS: One’s own life and /or body: 1Th 4:3-6; 2Ti 2:21,22.

Isa 52:12

YOU WILL NOT LEAVE IN HASTE OR GO IN FLIGHT: The captives returning from Assyria/Babylon did not have to flee for their lives — as did the Jews going out of Egypt (Exo 12:33).

Isa 52:13

Isa 52:13 — Isa 53:12: One complete song: 5 stanzas of 3 vv each: (a) Isa 52:13-15: “Behold my servant” — the twofold aspect of Messiah in sufferings and glory; (b) Isa 53:1-3: “Who has believed our message?” — the appeal of Christ heard by Israel, and rejected; (c) Isa 53:4-6: “He took up our infirmities” — the reason for his sufferings; (d) Isa 53:7-9: “he was oppressed and afflicted” — what his sufferings involved; (e) Isa 53:10-12: “it was the LORD’s will” — the divine purpose behind Messiah’s sufferings.

Isa 52:13 — Isa 53:12: The cross from OUR viewpoint. Psa 22: The cross from Messiah’s viewpoint.

SEE: Or “Behold!”: a trumpet call, demanding careful attention to all the follows.

MY SERVANT: The servant of Exo 21:5,6; Psa 40:6. The plural servant fails, but the singular servant succeeds.

The prophecies relating to Yahweh’s servant are found in Isaiah, from Isa 41 through this section. In these prophecies, Isaiah has been continually contrasting the “national” servant, Israel, with the “individual” servant, the Messiah, much to the discredit of the former. Israel the multitudinous servant has been called to an honorable position of service, but has despised the privilege and failed miserably (Isa41:8; 42:19; 43:10; 44:1,21; 43:4; 43:20). For this they are sharply rebuked (Isa 42:17-20). Meanwhile, Israel is called upon to “behold My Servant” (Isa 42:1); God’s individual “Servant” would accomplish what the national “Servant” could not. Through him the works of the Father, the greatest of which is the redemption and glorification of a portion of mankind, will be accomplished

God’s purpose of redemption requires the suffering and finally the sacrificial death of His obedient servant. See the stages in this second portion of Isaiah: (a) first, there is the merest hint of temporary discouragement (Isa 42:4), (b) secondly, a lament over “failure” (Isa 49:4); (c) third, personal abuse (Isa 50:6); and (4) finally, here, misrepresentation, injustice and a violent death!

Possible progression in 4 verbs here: (1) act wisely: Christ’s ministry; (2) raised: crucifixion; (3) lifted up: resurrection; and (4) highly exalted: ascension.

ACT WISELY: Or “prosper” (AV) or “succeed” (NET); sw Jos 1:7,8; Jer 23:5; 1Sa 18:14 (David in court of Saul). The sw in Heb can also mean “give understanding, or teach”.

RAISED: Heb “rum” = to be high. Lifted up in crucifixion and also in glory — double meanings throughout: cp Joh 12:32 and Isa 6:1, referred in Joh 12:41. Cp also Isa 57:15; Psa 89:27 (sw).

HIGHLY EXALTED: “Nasa”: a banner, or ensign (Exo 17:9,11). Cp “nes” (Isa 11:10). (As Hezekiah was exalted in the eyes of the nations: 2Ch 32:23).

Isa 52:14

MANY: Not only are many “appalled”, but ultimately “many” will be cleansed (v 15).

APPALLED: Or, “astonished” (RSV), “aghast” (NEB).

APPEARANCE: Sw “beauty” in Isa 53:2.

DISFIGURED: Heb “mishchath” — prob derived from a rt meaning “ruin”. Only twice in OT. In Lev 22:25 describes sacrifices that were marred or defective, and thus unacceptable.

BEYOND HUMAN LIKENESS: Crown of thorns (Mat 27:26), bruises on back, black eye, teeth knocked out, scar on cheek (Mat 27:30; Joh 18:22; Mic 5:1).

The “as” beginning this verse is matched by the “so” beginning v 15. As many individuals were astonished at the Messiah, so shall “many” nations be sprinkled (ie, cleansed) by him! Here is the multiplying effect of the work of Christ: what a comparatively few witnessed in person, in the streets of Jerusalem and on the brow of a little hill, will ultimately bring blessing to multitudes scattered from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth! And the marvelous irony is this: that which appalled and repelled those who witnessed it will at last be embraced joyfully and thankfully by humble and obedient believers. That which appeared tragic and senseless will be seen to be lovely and wise. Paul speaks of the rationale of the crucifixion, and this irony of the cross, to the Corinthian brethren: “Hath not God made foolish the things of this world?… We preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling-block and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God” (1Co 1:20,23,24).

That which “the world” saw as scandal and weakness was actually righteousness and power. Paul leads us surely to the conclusion that the salvation of mankind is specifically designed by God to run counter to proud and vain man’s expectations; hence the “astonishment” of Isa 52:14 (and the despite and disesteem of Isa 53:3). His purpose in so doing is undoubtedly to lend man to renounce his “worldly”, materialistic, natural attitudes, and to see salvation on God’s terms, and to see himself in God’s eyes. In the words of Paul again, this was done so “that no flesh should glory in His presence” (1Co 1:29).

Isa 52:15

SPRINKLE: “Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?… that no flesh should glory in his presence” (1Co 1:20-29). One who is made to appear leprous — ie an outcast and criminal — becomes the “priest” to cleanse “leprous” Gentiles. Cp Num 19:18,21. “Blood of sprinkling” (Heb 11:28; 1Pe 1:2). Ashes of heifer (Num 19; Heb 9:13). Blood of Passover lamb on doorposts (Exo 12:7,22; Psa 51:7).

The RSV has “startle”, but the Hebrew word (“nazah”) occurs elsewhere 19 times, always in the sense of sprinkling for ceremonial purification (ie, Lev 4:6; 16:14,19; Num 19:18,21). It is difficult to see why modern translators should replace the AV rendering.

MANY NATIONS: The blessing of all nations through the special seed promised to Abraham (Gen 12:3) will involve the forgiveness of sins. Cp Isa 42:1-4; 49:1-6.

KINGS SHUT THEIR MOUTHS BECAUSE OF HIM: Awe and astonishment (cp Job 29:9; 40:4). The LXX of this expression is used to describe the “marveling” of Pilate (Mat 27:14; Mar 15:5) at the patient silence of Jesus in the face of accusations (cp Isa 53:7).

Another “servant song” has this same idea: Isa 49:7 (cp v 23 there).

FOR WHAT THEY WERE NOT TOLD, THEY WILL SEE, AND WHAT THEY HAVE NOT HEARD, THEY WILL UNDERSTAND: Cited by Paul in Rom 15:21: prophetic of gospel being preached to Gentiles.

Isaiah 53

Isa 53:1

See Lesson, Fellowship of his suffering.

“He came to his own, and his own received him not” (Joh 1:11). “He saved others; himself he cannot save” (Mat 27:41,42; Mar 15:31). “Behold the lamb of God” (Joh 1:29). “Have any of the rulers believed on him?” (Joh 7:48).

OUR MESSAGE: Not the message “we” brought; but the message “we” received! Cp John 7:48: “Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?”

“What message? That of Isa 52:7-10: that God reigns, and that He has made bare His holy arm!

TO WHOM: The “al-mi” here is answered by the “alma” (virgin) of Isa 7:14!

THE ARM OF THE LORD: Cp Isa 52:10. As Moses’ arm (cp also Isa 63:5,11,12; 51:9,10) was leprous, and then healed (Exo 4:6), so was Christ! The “arm of the LORD” is a metaphor of military power; it pictures the LORD as a warrior who bares his arm, takes up his weapon, and crushes his enemies. But here the “enemy” is something very different: it is sin and human nature; and therefore, the LORD’s “warrior” must fight a very different battle!

“Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?… in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him… God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things — and the things that are not — to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him” (1Co 1:20-29).

Isa 53:2

HE GREW UP BEFORE HIM: That is, before God, and not (really) before man. In other words, in seclusion, away from the pressures of the world and the public eye. Nazareth, his childhood home, was a city of meager reputation, a despised place (John 1:46).

TENDER SHOOT… ROOT: Prob ref back to Isa 11:1. Cp Rev 22:16: the two seemingly paradoxical ideas “root” and “offspring” are taken from Isaiah’s “root” and “plant” here.

DRY GROUND: Heb “tsiyah” — reminiscent of Zion.

HE HAD NO BEAUTY… TO ATTRACT US TO HIM: Even before his last trials, Jesus was a man whom labor and persecution had rendered prematurely aged — although only 33, he was mistaken for a man nearly 50 years old (Joh 8:57).

TO ATTRACT US TO HIM: The AV has “when we shall see him”, and is echoed in Luke 20:13 — the parable of the vineyard. The lord at last sends his beloved son to the disobedient husbandmen. “It may be they will reverence him when they see him!” Sure enough, Isaiah’s prophecy foretells how the beloved son would not be reverenced, but rejected at his coming.

“It is still painfully true that the world sees nothing either in Christ or His Words. The beauty and harmony of the scriptures is overlooked, and that which tastes as sweet as wafers of honey, and is like fresh oil to those that love Christ, is distasteful and unpalatable indeed to those who reject Him (Num 11:8). They of the world still enquire: ‘What is it?’ And still to the incredulous Jew ‘there is no form nor comeliness’; but in the approaching dawn, the Branch of the Lord’s planting will be glorious in their eyes (Isa 4:1-3). Neither Christ or His brethren have any of that beauty which the vulgar eye admires, nor any of that external glory which ambition courts; and we look forward to the time when man’s renovated taste will recognise what true beauty is, for the regenerated heart will see that it is not looks, nor outward appearance, but thoughts, desires and deeds, that are beautiful in the sight of God. It is moral beauty that is real beauty: external and material beauty is only a transient type, an evanescent shadow of that which is real and enduring forever, therefore, to us, Christ even in His humiliation is altogether lovely, and our All in All. True beauty is all from within and not from without, for under a very fine form there may lurk a very bad heart. It is the inner work that is beautiful. It is the light, radiance and warmth of the inner man shining from the countenance that constitutes true beauty. May the Lord grant us the beauty of holiness and the adorning of a meek and quiet spirit” (Alice Hopkins, Lessons from Nature).

Isa 53:3

DESPISED AND REJECTED BY MEN: Particularly, here, by his countrymen, the Jews (cp Isa 49:7). “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him” (Joh 1:11). “He saved others, but he can’t save himself!” (Mat 27:41,42; Mar 15:31). Jesus came from Nazareth, a town and a district– Galilee — which was despised by other Jews (Joh 1:46; 7:41; 1Ki 9:11-13; Isa 9:1).

A MAN OF SORROWS: With an unsettled, transient existence (Luk 9:58); he was opposed and menaced (Luk 4:29); he suffered the indifference and the maligning of his own kindred (John 7:5; Mar 3:21). He often worked himself to exhaustion (Luk 8:46; John 4:6; Mar 4:36). While others slept, he spent whole nights in agonizing prayer.

FAMILIAR WITH SUFFERING: Lit “caused to know sickness”: sw as of Hezekiah (Isa 38:9), David (Psa 41:3), Asa (2Ch 16:12), Jehoram (2Ch 21:15,19). Sufferers with leprosy, as was Uzziah (2Ch 26:21). “It looks as though the sin of David started a streak of rottenness in the royal family (note esp the details in Psa 38 and Psa 51:7)” (WIsa 457).

FROM WHOM MEN HIDE THEIR FACES: Possibly, “he hid his face from us” (as the leper hid his face and cried, “Unclean!”: cp Lev 13:45). Either way, “the servant is likened to a seriously ill person who is shunned by others because of his horrible disease” (NET notes).

Isa 53:4

The Servant of Yahweh suffers for the sins of others. This is mentioned 12 times in this chapter: vv 4,4,5,5,5,5,6,8,10,11,12,12.

Allusions to the plague of leprosy (Lev 13; 14).

STRICKEN: The Heb word is used 57 times in Lev 13; 14 re leprosy. This then was the Jewish estimation of the man who was their Messiah: an unclean man to be shunned, lest they also become “defiled” by contact with him.

AFFLICTED: A state of deep and lasting humiliation, the sw as in Exo 1:11,12.

Isa 53:5

HE WAS PIERCED… CRUSHED: “It was not just the death of Jesus which made atonement, but his dying, “the suffering of (pertaining to) death” (Heb 2:9). He was very much a “LIVING sacrifice” (Rom 12:1,2).

CRUSHED: Sw Gen 3:15. Cp types of Law: lampstand of beaten gold (Exo 25:310; the beaten oil of daily sacrifice (Exo 29:40: the 2 cherubim of gold beaten out of one piece (Exo 37:7); the grain of firstfruits beaten out (Lev 2:1,14); pure olive oil beaten for light (Lev 24:2); etc. Lesson: necessity of tribulation (Act 14:22; Phi 3:10).

THAT BROUGHT US PEACE: Or, “that made us whole” (RSV) (cp Eph 2:14-18).

WOUNDS: The sw as Psa 38:5 and Isa 1:6, describing the “leprous” nation.

HEALED: Sw used re the cured leper (Lev 13:18,37; 14:3,48) and also of Hezekiah (2Ki 20:8; 2Ch 30:20); see also Num 12:13; Deu 28:27.

The “healing” reminds us of the experiences of Israel in the wilderness, when they cane to the bitter waters of Mara (Exo 15). The Lord showed Moses a tree and commanded him to cast it into the waters (v 25) He did so, and the waters were healed or made sweet. Thus by this miracle God declared His name to be “Yahweh Ropheka” — “I will heal thee” (v 26)!

This healing was only the pattern of that greater “healing” to come in the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ. During his ministry, every act of healing served to identify him with his Father’s character and purpose: “They that be whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:31,32).

The only logical conclusion of such an undertaking was the cross. And Peter, reflecting in later years upon that dread but wonderful day, could write that Christ “bare our sins in his own body on the tree… by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1Pe 2:24). By his reference to the tree he was linking together the miracle at the waters of Mara, the prophecy of Isaiah, and the cross of Calvary.

Isa 53:6

// Zec 13:7; Mat 26:31,56; Psa 119:176.

WE ALL, LIKE SHEEP, HAVE GONE ASTRAY, EACH OF US HAS TURNED TO HIS OWN WAY: The prophet Zechariah declared: “Smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered” (Zec 13:7). To this Jesus alluded when he told the disciples on the night of his arrest: “All ye shall be offended because of me this night” (Mat 26:31).

And so it was that they all forsook him and fled (v 56). Peter, recalling those same events, quoted Isa 53:6: “For ye were as sheep going astray” — but added the final thought that, after the resurrection, “(Ye) are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls” (1Pe 2:25).

Let us, as we view the cross, remember that even the apostles, who accompanied Jesus for more than three years, were weak and fearful as sheep in the time of their testing. Let us, therefore, not be unduly cast down by our failures; but let us return to our Shepherd to be healed: “I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Thy servant; for I do not forget Thy commandments” (Psa 119:176).

“There is a peculiar sinfulness about every one of the individuals; all are sinful, but each one with some special aggravation not found in his fellow. It is the mark of genuine repentance that while it naturally associates itself with other penitents, it also takes up a position of loneliness. ‘We have turned every one to his own way,’ is a confession that each man had sinned against light peculiar to himself, or sinned with an aggravation which he could not perceive in others. This confession is unreserved; there is not a word to detract from its force, nor a syllable by way of excuse. The confession is a giving up of all pleas of self-righteousness. It is the declaration of men who are consciously guilty — guilty without aggravations, guilty without excuse: they stand with their weapons of rebellion broken in pieces” (CHS).

“That night in Gethsemane, the disciples, like a panic-stricken stampeding flock of sheep, ‘deserted him and fled’ (Mat 26:56)” (WIsa 470).

THE LORD HAS LAID ON HIM THE INIQUITY OF US ALL: “Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha)” (Joh 19:17). An evident allusion to the ritual of the scapegoat, who bore or carried away the iniquities of Israel to a “land not inhabited” (Lev 16:21,22), that is, “outside the camp” (Heb 13:13). “Made to be sin for us, who (personally) knew no sin” (2Co 5:21).

Isa 53:7

HE WAS OPPRESSED AND AFFLICTED: The parallelism of this phrase is incomplete, and it has been suggested by textual critics that since the word “anah” means both “answer” and “afflict”, it originally occurred twice, in both senses, but that one “anah” has been dropped in transmission. If this is correct, though it essentially adds nothing to the message of the whole, then the phrase would have originally read: “He was oppressed, and he answered not; and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.”

YET HE DID NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH: Jesus was silent before the Sanhedrin (Mat 26:63); before Herod (Luk 23:9); and before Pilate (Mat 27:12-14; Joh 19:9). Cp Jer 11:19.

“What was the single most amazing thing that Jesus did? Was it the overcoming of the tempter in the wilderness? Was it acts of healing? Of raising the dead to life? Was it even hanging on the cross?

“I submit that the single most amazing thing that our Lord did, was to be silent.

“Jesus was on trial. He was set upon by a band of none-too-gentle soldiers, under orders to whisk him away to a night-time court. False witnesses accused him. Malicious council members conspired against him. Falsely pious leaders plotted with evil intent against him. And all the while, Jesus knew that he was right, and they were wrong.

“Before them was a loved Son. The accused was the only one who was truly blameless. The only one who really cared in his heart for the nation that these brutish elders thought they were saving from the Romans. Before them was someone who had only and always given of himself for others. The only one who had the power to truly do good. The only one who had the power to throw off the true yoke. Jesus was silent.

“Jesus was not powerless. He could have confuted the lies. He could have shouted down the insinuations as well as the blunt accusations. He could have put them in their place. He could have annihilated their arguments. He could have used his power to hurt them, or destroy them, and escape. He was right, and they were all wrong. Jesus was silent.

“How do we react, I wonder, to words spoken against us? Do we consider that they may be justified? Most times they probably are, and we are blind to our own failings.

“More often, perhaps, we are blinded by our sense of justice. We are quick to excuse ourselves, and even quicker to attack supposed injustice against ourselves. We may lash out most often against those closest to us. When we are tempted to react in such a way, let us think on the mind of Christ. ‘Let this mind be in you…’ ” (Mike Bull).

LED: See Mat 26:57; 27:2,31; Mar 15:16; Joh 18:13,28; 19:16. Jesus being LED to his crucifixion seems to be a point considerably stressed by the gospel writers. Is it to stress the lamb led to sacrifice, and the passivity of Jesus?

LAMB: Heb “seh” — the general word for sheep, often used of a lamb, as Exo 12:3-5. Can be used for male or female.

TO THE SLAUGHTER: The comparison to a sheep does not necessarily suggest a sacrificial metaphor. Sheep were slaughtered for food as well as for sacrificial rituals, and the word here need not refer to sacrificial slaughter (see Gen 43:16; Pro 7:22; 9:2; Jer 50:27; note also the use of the related verb in Exo 22:1; Deu 28:31; 1Sa 25:11.

SHEEP: Heb “rachel” = “ewe”.

SHEARERS: Heb “gahzaz”. Cp 4 men in OT who employed “shearers”: Judah (Gen 38:12,13), Laban (Gen 31:19), Nabal (1Sa 25:,2,4,7,11), and Absalom (2Sa 13:23,24). In each case the man who employed shearers was acting with evil motives toward another (respectively, Tamar, Jacob, David, and Amnon), but in unusual, unexpected ways God’s purpose was furthered. (Sheep-shearing was done in spring, the same time as Passover, and a time of great rejoicing.)

Isa 53:8

BY OPPRESSION: Or, poss, by the “assembly”, ref to Sanhedrin?

AND JUDGMENT: Poss, Pilate’s judgment room. The two phrases together: a perfect // with Psa 22:16: “Dogs (Gentiles) have surrounded me; a band (assembly = Sanhedrin) of evil men has encircled me.”

“He was led away after an unjust trial” (NET). Possibly, “coercion and legal decision”, or “coercive legal decision.”

WHO CAN SPEAK OF HIS DESCENDANTS?: Hezekiah had no son at the time of his disease (cp Isa 38:5 with 2Ch 33:1: cp also his own words in Isa 38:12,19). When a man dies childless, not only is his life cut off, but his “name” also perishes. Cp Psa 41:9. But Christ’s death was the making and not the perishing of his name (cp vv 10,11; Psa 22:30,31). See Ethiopian eunuch (Act 8:26-40): “What hinders me?” (cp Isa 56:4,5).

CUT OFF: A violent death (Dan 9:26). “Cut in two” lit — a covenant-victim (ie, 1Ki 3:25; Psa 136:13; cp Isa 49:8 with Gen 15:10). Adam was “cut in two”, and the “child”/”bride” Eve was made by God: Gen 2:21-24; Eph 5:31,32.

CUT OFF FROM THE LAND OF THE LIVING: // “cutting off of his days” (Isa 38:10), and “the land of the living” in Isa 38:11.

Isa 53:9

“He (Pilate) appointed that he would be buried with the (2) wicked, BUT (God appointed) that when he died he would be (buried) with the (one) rich.” An extraordinary fulfillment of a prophecy, in the most unlikely circumstances! What man would have so logically done — left on his own — was completely overturned by God’s providence!

Isa 53:10

Vv 10-12: The final section of this prophecy shows the death of Christ to have been the will of God, because it was essential to the producing of a righteous seed. The reward of Christ is pictured; it is twofold: the inheritance of a “spoil”, and the everlasting joy of fellowship with those whose salvation he made possible (Act 2:23; 4:28; Joh 3:14).

CAUSE HIM TO SUFFER: A malady of weakness. “Crucified through weakness” (2Co 13:4)… “put to death in the flesh” (1Pe 3:18).

THOUGH THE LORD MAKES: Heb is actually, “though you make”: Isaiah’s exhortation: ‘When YOU make this man an offering for YOUR sins, then…’

It is only when one accepts Christ in faith that he can become a part of Christ’s seed. We are the ones who must reach out and grasp the hope offered us in the completed sacrifice of Jesus. As he was “led” like a lamb to the slaughter (v 7), so we must be “led” by his “spirit”, or his teachings, to become through him sons of God (Rom 8:14)! We have an example of how Isaiah’s appeal to the reader fell upon the eyes, and the heart, of one listener, when the Ethiopian eunuch asked, in effect, “Am I allowed to make this man’s life an offering for my sin?” And the response came from Philip, “Only one thing is necessary. If you believe with all your heart, you may be baptized” (Acts 8:26-40).

Each time there is this positive response when Jesus is preached, the prophecy of Isaiah finds a further fulfillment; and Jesus sees yet another one who is the fruit of the travail of his soul. GUILT OFFERING: As in RV mg. Not simply “offering for sin” (as KJV). But, instead, “ashan” = trespass-offering (Lev 6:2-6; 7:1; Num 6:12; etc.). Offering for violence and deceit (Act 3:13-15).

HE WILL SEE HIS OFFSPRING: In “Second Isaiah”, the word “servant” only occurs in the singular up to Isa 53 (Isa 41:8,9; 42:1,19; 43:10; 44:1,2,21,26; 45:4; 48:20; 49:3,5,6,7; 50:10; 52:13; 53:11), and only occurs in the plural after Isa 53 (Isa 54:17; 56:6; 63:17; 65:8,9,13,13,14,15; 66:14). So Christ does see his seed, and they are servants, just like he!

PROLONG HIS DAYS: Hezekiah’s 15 extra years.

THE WILL OF THE LORD: Translated “purpose” in AV of Ecc 3:1,17; 8:6, and “pleasure’ in AV: those things which “please” God are those things which fulfill His purpose. He has no “pleasure” in the death of the wicked (Eze 18:32); but, marvelously, He finds “pleasure” in the death of a perfectly righteous Son, because that death brings salvation to others!

PROSPER: Hezekiah “prospered in all his works” (2Ch 32:30).

Isa 53:11

THE SUFFERING OF HIS SOUL: “The travail of his soul” (AV). “The fruit of the travail of his soul” (RSV). It was decreed of man by the Adamic curse that only by the sweat of his brow, only by sore travail, would he wrest bread from the soil. By the travail of his soul, and the sweat of Gethsemane, Jesus persevered under the curse and finally produced the “fruit”, the “bread” of eternal life. We are that “one bread”, that “one body”, the fruit of his travail.

BY HIS KNOWLEDGE: “By knowledge of him” (NIV mg; ASV): ie, Joh 17:3; Phi 3:10; Col 2:3; ct Hos 4:1,6. An instance of justification by faith (through knowledge). This translation suits the context: Isa 52:15; 53:1 (Who has believed? imp few or none!); Isa 53:3 (we esteemed him not); but… Isa 53:6 (the great realization: it was for us!); so… now we see, and understand!

MY RIGHTEOUS SERVANT: The last of 20 refs to the singular “servant” in Isa 40-53. From this point on, Isa 54-66 has 11 refs to the plural “servants”.

WILL JUSTIFY MANY: “He shall see his seed” (Isa 53:10).

JUSTIFY: Heb “tsadaq”: used at least six times in the sense of “make righteous” in a legal sense, ie, “pronounce innocent, acquit” (Exo 23:7; Deu 25:1; 1Ki 8:32 = 2Ch 6:23; Pro 17:15; Isa 5:23). It can also mean “render justice” (as a royal function: 2Sa 15:4; Psa 82:3), “concede” (Job 27:5), “vindicate” (Isa 50:8), and “lead to righteousness” (by teaching and example, Dan 12:3).

JUSTIFY (v 11): A pointer to Paul’s letter to the Romans: Rom 3:21-31. Cp v 12n.

This is the last of 20 references in Isa 40-53 to the “Servant” (singular). This marks the transition; the work of God’s singular Servant has now climaxed in the justification of “many”. Isa 54-66 has no more references to the “Servant” but eleven references to “servants” plural!

Isa 53:12

The servant is compared here to a warrior who will be richly rewarded for his effort and success in battle.

A PORTION: The feast of Isa 25:6-8. Cp Psa 22:25.

DIVIDE THE SPOILS WITH THE STRONG: Binding the “strong man” death (Mat 12:29).

HE BORE THE SIN OF MANY: Mat 26:28: “shed for many for the remission of sins.” Also, Heb 9:28.

MADE INTERCESSION FOR THE TRANSGRESSORS: Cp 2Ch 30:18-20, re Hezekiah.

INTERCESSION: A pointer to the letter to the Hebrews: Heb 4:15,16; 7:26; 10:11-22. Cp v 11n.

The one who died for us has been raised from the dead for our justification (Rom 4:25). As a high priest at the right hand of God in heaven, he intercedes for us. The one who, while in the flesh, experienced every weakness and sorrow, yet without sinning (Heb 4:15,16), is able now to save “to the uttermost” those who come to God through him, since he lives always (7:25,26). All his life fitted him expressly for this task, to be merciful and sympathetic of us his brethren.

The picture we see of Christ is different now. It is the same face as portrayed by Isaiah, the same strong character, the same compassion, the same tenderness. But the lines of sorrow and grief are gone. The visage that was so marred has now taken on a beauty surpassing all the sons of Adam, a radiant joy unknown to mortals. He is the firstborn of the family of God, and we have been called to be his brothers and sisters.

Isaiah 50

Isa 50:1

BECAUSE OF YOUR SINS YOU WERE SOLD: “Ye have sold yourselves” (AV): it was their doing, not God’s. (Cp figure, Rom 7:14,15). Israel has separated herself from God by her iniquities; it is her fault, not His! The 200,000 Jewish captives, “sold” into slavery at the hand of the Assyrians.

WHERE: “Of what kind” (LXX), ie “from where”. What is the reason?

YOUR MOTHER’S: Mother = Jerusalem (Isa 1; Eze 16:23).

CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE: May be given when some uncleanness has been found (Deu 24:1). Backsliding Israel had committed adultery (Jer 3:8), as had Hosea’s wife (Hos 2:2).

TO WHICH OF MY CREDITORS DID I SELL YOU?: Under LM, children or oneself could be sold into slavery as a judicial sentence or payment of debt (Exo 21:7; Neh 5:5), but they would be freed at Jubilee (Lev 25:39).

BECAUSE OF YOUR SINS… TRANSGRESSIONS: ‘I did not divorce you; you divorced yourself!’

Isa 50:2

Vv 2-4: Allusions to 10 plagues upon Egypt.

WHY WAS THERE NO ONE?: That is, to redeem his brother: Psa 49:7-9; 143:2.

WHY WAS THERE NO ONE TO ANSWER?: That is, none to answer His call: Isa 66:4; cp Pro 1:24,28; Joh 5:43.

WAS MY ARM TOO SHORT TO RANSOM YOU?: The role of the near-kinsman/goel/redeemer: to buy Israel out of slavery.

DO I LACK THE STRENGTH TO RESCUE YOU?: God can deliver, through Christ, a “ransom” (Rom 3:24). Cp Joh 3:16; Rom 8:3; 2Co 5:19.

I DRY UP THE SEA: Exodus imagery: drying up Red Sea; waters turned to blood; plague of darkness (v 3).

Isa 50:3

SACKCLOTH: Mourning, by Gentiles, at eclipse of their rulers: cp Rev 6:12.

Isa 50:4

AN INSTRUCTED TONGUE: “My doctrine is not mine, but His that sent me” (Joh 7:16; cp Joh 6:63; 8:47; 12:49; 14:24; 17:3).

SUSTAINS THE WEARY: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Mat 11:28). Cp Heb 12:12; Isa 35:3; Mal 3:16.

MORNING BY MORNING: Morning devotions of Christ: Mar 1:35; Luk 4:42.

WAKENS MY EAR: Ct deaf Israel: Isa 43:8! Cp Rev 2:7,11, etc.

Isa 50:5

OPENED MY EARS: As spoken by Christ in Psa 40:6,7 (cit Heb 10:5-7).

AND I HAVE NOT BEEN REBELLIOUS: “Not as I will” (Mat 26:39; Joh 14:31; Phi 2:7,8; Heb 5:8; 10:5).

“In this trial and preparation of the heart man must be responsive. There is a profound meaning in the words, ‘The Lord God hath opened my ears, and I was not rebellious.’ [Isa 50:5] Some men are rebellious even to the extent of making void the word of God. God gave to Saul a new heart so that he began his reign well, but he became rebellious and his heart turned to evil. His fall furnishes an excellent illustration of the proverb, ‘A sound heart is the life of the flesh, but envy is the rottenness of the bones’ [Pro 14:30]” (PrPr).

Isa 50:6

Hezekiah: the prospect of such vicious treatment at the hand of victorious Assyrians.

I OFFERED… MY CHEEKS TO THOSE WHO PULLED OUT MY BEARD: “Turn other cheek” (Mat 5:39; Isa 53:5; Mic 5:1). Cp Mt 26:67; 27:26.

SPITTING: Luk 18:32; Mar 14:65; 15:9.

Isa 50:7

I WILL NOT BE DISGRACED: “Deterred by insults” (Roth).

I SET MY FACE LIKE FLINT: To go to Jerusalem (Luk 9:51; Mar 10:32). Cp the flinty rock that poured forth water to redeemed slaves (Deu 8:15). Flint suggests supreme hardness: cp Eze 3:8,9.

Isa 50:8

The court of law again! — Isa 41:1,21-29; 43:8-13,26; 44:7; 45:20-25. Cp Rom 8:31-34: “If God be for us… justifies… condemns.. .makes intercession..”

VINDICATES: Or “justifieth” (AV). Sig “acquittal”, proven righteous — as Christ only (as to actual deeds), and/or forgiveness by faith, as all others (Isa 53:11; Rom 4:24,25; Psa 32:1,2).

WHO THEN WILL BRING CHARGES AGAINST ME?: Or “contend with me” (AV).

WHO IS MY ACCUSER?: Or “adversary” (AV), or “the master of my cause” (AV mg). Evidently a legal term, meaning “prosecutor”.

Isa 50:9

WHO IS HE THAT WILL CONDEMN ME?: Cp Rom 8:33,34: No one may condemn us but God, and He is on our side. Esp applies to Christ: “Who of you can convict me of sin?” (Joh 8:46). He was “without sin” (1Pe 2:22; Heb 4:15).

WEAR OUT LIKE A GARMENT: Ct Deu 8:4: wilderness wandering: “Your raiment waxed not old.” Suggestive of sinful human nature: cp Zec 3:3; Isa 64:6: filthy rags! Those who trust in the LM and the keeping of it will be thoroughly disappointed — for it will vanish away: Heb 8:13; cp Psa 102:26.

THE MOTHS WILL EAT THEM UP: Sym corruption (Luk 12:33; Mat 6:19,20).

Isa 50:10

WHO HAS NO LIGHT: Mystified and bewildered by present evil circumstances.

Isa 50:11

The campfires of Assyrians encircling the city. It was Passover time (Isa 30:29; 31:5) and nights were cold (Joh 18:18,25). Cp Peter by fire (Luk 22:55).

YOUR FIRE… YOU HAVE KINDLED: The Jewish trust in salvation by their own works was a fire of their own kindling, which would not be adequate.

Isaiah 49

Isa 49:1

Isa 49:1-7: Messiah’s “failure” and success.

Similarities with Isa 42: my servant (Isa 42:1 with Isa 49:3); isles (Isa 42:4 with Isa 49:1); keep thee (Isa 42:6 with Isa 49:8); covenant of people (Isa 42:6 with Isa 49:8); light of Gentiles (Isa 42:6 with Isa 49:8); prisoners (Isa 42:7 with Isa 49:9); sit in darkness (Isa 42:7 with Isa 49:9); and a song (Isa 42:10 with Isa 49:13).

Cp with Peter in temple: “My servant, in whom I will be glorified” (Isa 49:1 / Act 3:13); “my God shall be my strength” (Isa 49:5 / Act 3:16); “to raise up tribes of Jacob” (Isa 49:6 / Act 3:6); a covenant of people (Isa 49:8 / Act 3:25); salvation to ends of earth (Isa 49:6 / Act 3:25); pastures, springs (Isa 49:9,10,13 / Act 3:19); all gather together, and come to thee (Isa 49:1 8/ Act 3:11).

DISTANT NATIONS: Gentiles (vv 5,6).

BEFORE I WAS BORN…: Virgin birth (Isa 7:14). Other Isa prophecies of the virgin birth: Isa 41:9; 43:1; 44:2,24; 45:4; 46:3.

MY NAME: Immanuel (Isa 7:14; 8:8).

Isa 49:2

A preaching mission which ends in suffering!

POLISHED ARROW: Or “cleansed”, ie of his grievous illness.

AND CONCEALED ME IN HIS QUIVER: The figurative language emphasizes the servant’s importance as the LORD’s effective instrument. The servant’s mouth, which stands metonymically for his words, is compared to a sharp sword because he will be an effective spokesman on God’s behalf (see Isa 50:4). The LORD holds his hand on the servant, ready to draw and use him at the appropriate time. The servant is like a sharpened arrow reserved in a quiver for just the right moment.

Isa 49:3

“This v identifies the servant as Israel. This seems to refer to the exiled nation (cf Isa 41:8,9; 44:1-2,21;45:4; 48:20), but in vv 5,6 this servant says he has been commissioned to reconcile Israel to God, so he must be distinct from the exiled nation. This servant is an ideal ‘Israel’ who, like Moses of old, mediates a covenant for the nation (v 8), leads them out of bondage (v 9), and carries out God’s original plan for Israel by positively impacting the pagan nations (v 6). By living according to God’s law, Israel was to be a model of God’s standards of justice to the surrounding nations (Deu 4:6-8). The sinful nation failed, but the servant, the ideal ‘Israel’, will succeed by establishing justice throughout the earth” (NET notes).

IN WHOM I WILL DISPLAY MY SPLENDOR: Even after death, a yet greater glorification.

Isa 49:4

I HAVE LABORED TO NO PURPOSE: The discouragement of disease and apostasy (2Ch 30:3,6,9,10; 32:6-8). The Egyptian alliance (Isa 30:1-5; 19:11-15).

WHAT IS DUE ME IS IN THE LORD’S HAND: He committed righteous judgment to God (Christ’s prayer in Gethsemane).

Isa 49:5

HONORED: “Glorious” (AV). Cp Isa 60:21; 61:3.

Isa 49:6

A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES: The overthrow of Assyrians caused many to bring gifts… all nations to glorify God of Israel (2Ch 32:23). Salvation to Gentiles: appropriated to himself by Paul (Act 13:46-48). Cp Gal 1:15 with v 1 here; Phi 2:16 with v 4 here; and 2Co 6:2 with v 8a here.

Isa 49:7

DESPISED AND ABHORRED: Hezekiah, the one despised and abhorred by the nation of Israel because of his dread affliction (Isa 53:3-5).

Isa 49:8

Isa 49:8-26: Return of captives; Zion’s new family.

A TIME OF MY FAVOR: “An acceptable time” (AV); ref some special or feast day. Perhaps Passover: Isa 30:29; 31:5; 33:20; 26:20).

A COVENANT FOR THE PEOPLE: Hezekiah’s recovery marked the renewal of God’s covenant with Judah. For Christ, a paradox: a covenant-victim must die, or there is no covenant!

Isa 49:9

Cp Zec 9:9-11: Peace to Gentiles, inheritance for Israel, the blood of covenant bringing forth prisoners. Cp Heb 13:20: God of peace, shepherd of sheep (v 9 here).

Isa 49:12

ASWAN: “Sinim” = the wilderness of Sin (Exo 16:1; Num 33:11,15).

Isa 49:14

A flashback to the grim days of despair.

THE LORD HAS FORGOTTEN ME: “Hath God cast away His people?” (Rom 11:1,2).

Isa 49:15

Figure of mother and children in Isaiah: Isa 8:3,4; 11:8; 26:17,18; 28:9; 45:10,11; 46:3,4; 49:15,20-23; 54:1; 60:16; 66:11-13.

Isa 49:16

PALMS OF MY HANDS: A slave is tattooed on his hand with his master’s mark (cp Rev 13:16; Exo 13:9; Isa 44:5). Thus, in this figure, God makes himself the “slave” of Israel. By contrast, the ten commandments were engraved in stone — 2Co 3:7 — which could be smashed — and it was. But God’s hands can never come to any harm, and on them our names are written… forever!

And then there are the hands of God’s SON! “Then he said to Thomas… ‘See my hands’ ” (John 20:27).

An orphaned boy was living with his grandmother when their house caught fire. The grandmother, trying to get upstairs to rescue the boy, perished in the flames. The boy’s cries for help were finally answered by a man who climbed an iron drainpipe and came back down with the boy hanging tightly to his neck.

Several weeks later, a public hearing was held to determine who would receive custody of the child. A farmer, a teacher, and the town’s wealthiest citizen all gave the reasons they felt they should be chosen to give the boy a home. But as they talked, the lad’s eyes remained focused on the floor. Then a stranger walked to the front and slowly took his hands from his pockets, revealing severe scars on them. As the crowd gasped, the boy cried out in recognition. This was the man who had saved his life. His hands had been burned when he climbed the hot pipe. With a leap the boy threw his arms around the man’s neck and held on for dear life. The other men silently walked away, leaving the boy and his rescuer alone. Those marred hands had settled the issue.

Many voices are calling for our attention. Among them is the One whose nail-pierced hands remind us that He has rescued us from sin and its deadly consequences. To him belongs our love and devotion.

Isa 49:17

YOUR SONS HASTEN BACK: “Thy children shall make haste” (AV), fleeing from captivity.

Isa 49:23

Gentile rulers assist in the Jews’ return from captivity — which resembles a new “birth” (hence nursing parents).

Isa 49:25

God reclaims the “plunder” taken by the Assyrian army: the vast numbers of slaves carried out of Israel into Babylon. “How can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man?” (Mat 12:29).

Isaiah 45

Isa 45:1

HIS ANOINTED: “All through the OT this exalted title is used only of Messiah or a king reigning in Jerusalem. It is almost impossible to believe that a prophet of the LORD would give this high dignity to a pagan monarch” (WIsa 395).

TO CYRUS: See Lesson, Isaiah’s “Cyrus”.

WHOSE RIGHT HAND I TAKE HOLD OF: A play on name of Hezekiah. The 2nd Moses (Isa 44:28; Num 12:7) is also a 2nd David (Isa 45:1; 2Sa 7:18-20).

TO STRIP KINGS OF THEIR ARMOR: The KJV has “to loose the loins of kings”, but this has no verbal connection with Dan 5:6 (KJV: “joints of his loins were loosed”, but NIV: “his legs gave way”), where very different Heb words are used. The idea here is plainly: swords unbuckled and laid aside.

TO OPEN DOORS…: The temple doors could now be safely opened. And the gates of the city could be flung open to receive the released captives, coming home: cp Isa 26:1,2; 40:4.

Isa 45:2

I WILL GO BEFORE YOU AND WILL LEVEL THE MOUNTAINS: Cp Isa 40:4: captives returning from Babylon/Assyria.

BREAK DOWN GATES: “Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies” (Gen 22:17): First, Hezekiah with the Assyrians; and then, Christ with death and the grave (Rev 1:18).

Isa 45:3

TREASURES OF DARKNESS: Treasures which had been hidden in subterranean passages under the Temple, etc — in anticipation of the Assyrian conquest of Jerusalem — were now brought out to public display again.

(NT) “All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col 2:3). God, “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4).

THE GOD OF ISRAEL, WHO SUMMONS YOU BY NAME: The same thing is said of Jacob-Israel in Isa 49:1,3.

Isa 45:4

THOUGH YOU DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE ME: Or, simply, “when you did not know me”.

Isa 45:5

I AM THE LORD, AND THERE IS NO OTHER: Repeated in vv 6,14,18,21,22; 42:8; 43:3,11; 44:8; 46:9. In ct v 1.

THOUGH YOU HAVE NOT ACKNOWLEDGED ME: A ref, not to the religion of this Anointed (“Cyrus”?), but to his birth. Sb idea: “when you were too young to acknowledge Me!” // refs: Isa 7:14; 49:1.

Isa 45:6

FROM THE RISING OF THE SUN TO THE PLACE OF ITS SETTING: From east to west throughout the region, kings and nations now knew that the God of Israel was the One true God, and capable of vindicating and protecting His special people (2Ch 32:23).

I AM THE LORD, AND THERE IS NO OTHER: To apply or speak such words to an idolater like Cyrus (v 1; Isa 45:28) would be ridiculous.

Isa 45:7

// Gen 1:3-5. Spiritual relevance: light/dark = good/evil; firmament = righteousness coming upon the earth; herbs/grass/trees = salvation springing up out of the earth (resurrection!).

See Lesson, Angels of evil?

By parallel, light = prosperity, and darkness = disaster.

DARKNESS: That is, lies in the mouth of prophets: 2Ch 18:22.

Isa 45:8

Vv 8-17: Righteousness — for Jews and Gentiles. // Isa 55:9-11. The marvelous Year of Jubilee in Hezekiah’s reign, when God sent copious rains and a great natural fruitfulness to Judah (2Ki 19:29,30).

By parallel, rain = righteousness, and earth = people.

SALVATION SPRING UP: Holy Spirit conception.

RIGHTEOUSNESS GROW WITH IT: Holy Spirit resurrection.

GROW: Heb “tzamach” — related to the Messiah, the Branch (tzamach) in Isa 4:2; Jer 23:5; 33:15; Zec 3:8; 6:12. As also in Isa 44:4.

Isa 45:9

WHAT ARE YOU MAKING?: Jewish challenge to God’s right to fashion Gentiles in their mold (cp Rom 9:20,21).

‘HE HAS NO HANDS’: That is, ‘He is a god who does nothing.’

To this Paul comments: “But who are you, O man [the Jew], to talk back to God? ‘Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?” ‘ [Isa 45:9] Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay [the same kind of human nature, no better in Jews than in Gentiles] some pottery [even Gentiles!] for noble purposes and some [even Jews!] for common use?”

Isa 45:10

Figure of mother and children in Isaiah: Isa 8:3,4; 11:8; 26:17,18; 28:9; 45:10,11; 46:3,4; 49:15,20-23; 54:1; 60:16; 66:11-13.

Isa 45:13

Not about Cyrus at all. In Isa 48:15 this is applied to “Jacob-Israel” (cp Isa 48:12).

RAISE UP: “Awaken” = resurrection. (Note: “Cyrus” = simply “him” in text!)

CYRUS: This name is not in original at all, but is presupposed from elsewhere.

IN MY RIGHTEOUSNESS: Cp the same words in Isa 41:12.

I WILL MAKE ALL HIS WAYS STRAIGHT: Cp Isa 40:3: “Make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.” (Could this reasonably be applied to the pagan Cyrus?)

AND SET MY EXILES FREE: Those who fled to Egypt to escape the Assyrians (Isa 18-20) may now return in peace. A new “exodus”.

(NT) The fullest realization in Christ — the true “heir” — releasing the captives of death (Act 2:24; Eph 4:8; Zec 9:11).

BUT NOT FOR A PRICE OR REWARD: A redemption without price (Rom 3:24,25; cp Psa 44:12).

Isa 45:14

EGYPT… CUSH… SABEANS…: The nations bring tribute to Israel (Isa 18:7; 23:18; 60:5-14; 61;6) because Jehovah has exalted Israel (Isa 49:7; 60:10; 61:9); and this proves Him to be the true God (Isa 40:5; 44:3-5; 48:20; 49:7; 52:10; 59:17; 61:9). These words were never true of Cyrus in any way, but they are clearly applicable to God’s glorifying of Israel (Isa 49:23; 60:9-16). It is easy to apply these words to Israel in the time of Hezekiah, but not at all to the restoration from the later Babylonian captivity.

SURELY GOD IS WITH YOU, AND THERE IS NO OTHER, THERE IS NO OTHER GOD: Not only do the Gentiles bring their wealth, but they also bring their devotion and worship!

Isa 45:18

Vv 18-25: Unto God every knee shall bow. The earth intended as eternal habitation of the righteous. Behind creation was intelligence, purpose, form, and planning!

TO BE EMPTY: “Tohu”, without form, sw Gen 1:2.

Isa 45:20

A new courtroom scene. The witnesses this time: enlightened Gentiles (not blind Jews!). Ct Isa 43:8,10.

Isa 45:22

TURN TO ME AND BE SAVED: ‘Turn and look at me… and be saved’: Num 21:8; Heb 12:2; Joh 3:14-16.

Isaiah 46

Isa 46:1

Vv 1-13: “Bel, bow down!” The great ct between Yahweh and the gods of Assyria. (Note: Cyrus prayed to the same gods as did the Babylonians!).

BEL: A Babylonian god (cp Baal), usually identified with Marduk or Merodach, the chief deity of the Babylonians (ISBE).

NEBO: “The name of a Babylonian deity mentioned only in Isa 46:1… Nebo was the tutelary deity of the ancient city of Borsippa, some 15 miles ssw of Babylon. He achieved great popularity throughout Mesopotamia and the surrounding regions during the 1st millennium BC. The name of this god appears as an element in at least three Babylonian names mentioned in the OT: the great king Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian official Nebushazban, and the military commander Nebuzaradan” (ABD).

STOOPS LOW: Nebo, always pictured as straight as an arrow, is caused by God to “stoop”: cp fate of Dagon in 1Sa 5:3,4.

THE IMAGES THAT ARE CARRIED ABOUT: Cp v 7. These idols have to be carried by their devotees; but — by ct — Yahweh carries His people (Isa 46:3; Deu 1:31; 32:11) — not the other way around!

Isa 46:3

Figure of mother and children in Isaiah: Isa 8:3,4; 11:8; 26:17,18; 28:9; 45:10,11; 46:3,4; 49:15,20-23; 54:1; 60:16; 66:11-13.

Isa 46:6

GOLD… SILVER: “Sin” is always a costly enterprise!

Isa 46:10

MY PURPOSE WILL STAND, AND I WILL DO ALL THAT I PLEASE: The irresistible Assyrian invasion (Isa 8:7,8; 10:5,6), the futility of all statecraft to cope with the situation (Isa 8:9,11,12; 30:1-5), the catastrophic overthrow and sensational deliverance (Isa 14:25; 17:11-14; 30:30,31; etc). And, furthermore, the “pleasure” of the LORD in rendering salvation through Christ (Isa 53:10,11).

Isa 46:11

A BIRD OF PREY… FROM A FAR-OFF LAND: Sennacherib himself: Since God “called” him, God could also defeat him.

Isa 46:13

MY SALVATION WILL NOT BE DELAYED: “Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay” (Hab 2:3), a contemporary.

Isaiah 47

Isa 47:1

Isa 47: See Lesson, Babylon = Assyria. Judgments promised upon Assyria, in days of Isaiah. (But did it come? Perhaps it was deferred, as by the repentance of Nineveh in the days of Jonah: cp Jon 3:9,10. Did Sennacherib learn from this?)

TENDER OR DELICATE: Terms used ironically?

Isa 47:2

TAKE MILLSTONES AND GRIND FLOUR: Degrading duty of a female slave (LB 427). Cp Samson in Jdg 15:21.

TAKE OFF YOUR VEIL: Removal of covering of modesty (1Co 11:15).

LIFT UP YOUR SKIRTS… (through v 3)…: Successive steps involved in going into captivity, or fleeing from capture.

Isa 47:4

Or, “A man is our redeemer; the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel” (WIsa 420).

Isa 47:5

SIT IN SILENCE: Posture of mourning: Job 2:13; Lam 2:10.

GO INTO DARKNESS: “And his kingdom was plunged into darkness” (Rev 16:10).

Isa 47:6

“Terribly true of the cruel Assyrians… but not at all true of the Babylonian captivity, when Judaean captives were able to build houses, plant gardens, and have families (Jer 29:5,6)” (WIsa 417).

Isa 47:8

THERE IS NONE BESIDES ME: The ultimate blasphemy (cp Isa 46:9).

I WILL NEVER BE A WIDOW: “I sit as queen; I am not a widow, and I will never mourn” (Rev 18:7).

Isa 47:11

DISASTER WILL COME UPON YOU, AND YOU WILL NOT KNOW…: “While people are saying, ‘Peace and safety,’ destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape” (1Th 5:3).

Isa 47:12

Vv 12,13: Pretentious, man-made, man-glorifying religions.

Isa 47:15

AND TRAFFICKED WITH… NOT ONE THAT CAN SAVE YOU: “The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more” (Rev 18:11).

Isaiah 48

Isa 48:1

A hypocritical righteousness, characteristic of the time of Hezekiah’s reformation. A false confidence in “father” Abraham: Joh 8:33; Rom 2:17-19.

Isa 48:2

An almost superstitious reliance on the holiness of Jerusalem: cp Mic 3:11.

Isa 48:3

Vv 3,5-7: God makes the same argument to Israel (here) that He has made against the Assyrians (Isa 41:22; 42:9; 44:7,8; 45:21; 46:9,10).

THEN SUDDENLY I ACTED, AND THEY CAME TO PASS: The “sudden” destruction of Sennacherib’s host (Isa 37:33-37).

Isa 48:4

The image is that of a person who has tensed the muscles of the face and neck as a sign of resolute refusal.

IRON: Unbending, stiff.

FOREHEAD… BRONZE: Instead of gold (Exo 28:38; cp Jer 31:33).

Isa 48:5

The prophet Isaiah’s tirades against the folly of idolatry was not directly only at the Assyrians! Cp 2Ki 18:4.

Isa 48:6

HIDDEN THINGS UNKNOWN TO YOU: A dramatic new development still in the future: ie, the final and absolute fulfillment of these prophecies, in the days of the Messiah. Esp the idea (the mystery to be revealed) that salvation would be extended to the Gentiles (Rom 16:25; Eph 3:9).

Isa 48:11

The God of Israel is a God in control of events (Isa 41:22; 42:9; 44:7,8; 45:9,10).

Isa 48:15

The “him” = Hezekiah, whose birth and character and achievements had all been foretold in earlier days (Isa 7:14; 9:6,7; 11:1-12).

Isa 48:16

I HAVE NOT SPOKEN IN SECRET: As Jesus told Annas (Joh 18:20).

AND NOW THE SOVEREIGN LORD HAS SENT ME, WITH HIS SPIRIT: Cp Isa 61:1; 11:2. “For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit” (Joh 3:34; cp Joh 7:33,37-39).

Isa 48:20

LEAVE BABYLON… THE LORD HAS REDEEMED HIS SERVANT JACOB: Return from Babylonian captivity of 200,000 or so Jews.

Isa 48:21

WATER… FROM THE ROCK: Exo 17:6 (cp Isa 41:17,18). In Hezekiah’s day, the Siloam conduit (2Ch 32:30; 2Ki 18:17; Isa 8:6). Jesus in Joh 7:37-39.

Isa 48:22

THERE IS NO PEACE… FOR THE WICKED: Compare Isa 57:20,21. These two similar references to the wicked divide the last portion of Isaiah (40-66) into three equal divisions of 9 chapters each (40-48; 49-57; 58-66).

Contrast with Isa 66:24: “the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me”. Thus the three-fold division of this section of Isaiah: ending with wicked… wicked again… and finally, NO wicked! — for they have all perished.

Thus, there is no peace for the wicked (Isa 48:22), and still no peace for the wicked (Isa 57:20,21)… until, finally, they all perish. Then, at last, they find “peace”: the peace of death!
