Hosea 9

Hos 9:1

DO NOT BE JUBILANT LIKE THE OTHER NATIONS: The Jews had mistakenly worshipped the gods of nature and fertility — believing that they gave them grain and wine. This involved licentious fertility rites.

YOU LOVE THE WAGES OF A PROSTITUTE AT EVERY THRESHING FLOOR: Israel’s worship of the Canaanite gods was an idolatry as well as a spiritual “adultery” (in fact, it probably involved a more literal immorality as well). For this immorality (as a prostitute), Israel expected to be “paid” with richer harvests!

Hos 9:2

THRESHING FLOORS AND WINEPRESSES WILL NOT FEED THE PEOPLE; THE NEW WINE WILL FAIL THEM: Threshing floors and wine presses were common places where ritual prostitution took place. It was through these rites that the worshippers sought to stimulate the gods to engage in sexual acts and so bestow fruitfulness on them and their land.

Hos 9:3

EPHRAIM WILL RETURN TO EGYPT: Figuratively, a return to sin and darkness: Rom 7:24; Eph 2:11,12.

AND EAT UNCLEAN FOOD IN ASSYRIA: Israel would eat unclean food in an unclean land (cp the prodigal son: Luk 15:16), because her sins had rendered her unclean in God’s sight.

Hos 9:4

THE BREAD OF MOURNERS: Which was ceremonially unclean because of contact with dead bodies (Num 19:14,15,22; Deu 26:14). Such bread might be suitable for human consumption, but it was unacceptable as an offering to God.

THIS FOOD WILL BE FOR THEMSELVES: That is, it will serve a physical purpose, but will have no spiritual significance.

Hos 9:5

WHAT WILL YOU DO ON THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTED FEASTS?: “The solemn day” (AV). The day of affliction, bereavement, death, or judgment. When those days came, they would have nothing to offer their God.

Hos 9:6

EGYPT WILL GATHER THEM, AND MEMPHIS WILL BURY THEM: After the overthrown of the Northern Kingdom, many Jews would flee to Egypt, and some would live their whole lives — and die — there. Memphis (near modern Cairo) was an Egyptian city famous as a burial site because of the pyramid tombs there.

THEIR TREASURES OF SILVER WILL BE TAKEN OVER BY BRIERS, AND THORNS WILL OVERRUN THEIR TENTS: Back in the Land of Israel, weeds would overgrow the Israelites’ abandoned treasures, and thorns would take over their houses.

Hos 9:7

THE DAYS OF PUNISHMENT ARE COMING: “For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written” (Luk 21:22).

THE PROPHET IS CONSIDERED A FOOL: The Israelites had regarded the prophets whom the Lord had sent to them — including Hosea — as demented fools (2Ki 9:11; Jer 29:26,27).

Hos 9:8

This is probably Hosea’s lament for himself, and his treatment at the hands of his fellow Jews.

Hos 9:9

THE DAYS OF GIBEAH: See Jdg 19: the rape and murder of the Levite’s concubine. This sin had resulted in war in Israel and almost the obliteration of the tribe of Benjamin (Jdg 20). War would come again, and God would almost entirely obliterate all the Israelites for their sins.

Cp Gibeah to Gabbatha (John 19:13), the Pavement of the judge’s seat, where Christ was condemned.

Hos 9:10

WHEN I FOUND ISRAEL, IT WAS LIKE FINDING GRAPES IN THE DESERT: At first, Israel was a pleasure to God: cp Isa 28:4; Jer 24:2; Mic 7:1.

WHEN I SAW YOUR FATHERS, IT WAS LIKE SEEING THE EARLY FRUIT ON THE FIG TREE: But contrast Jesus and the fig tree (Mat 21:19), which was cursed because it bore NO fruit.

BAAL PEOR: Where Israel joined with the immoral Moabite women in worshipping idols: Num 25:3.

Hos 9:11

EPHRAIM’S GLORY WILL FLY AWAY LIKE A BIRD: The glory of the Ephraimites, their numerous children, would fly away like a bird, quickly and irretrievably.

NO BIRTH, NO PREGNANCY, NO CONCEPTION: There would be few births, or even pregnancies, or even conceptions. There is a play on the name “Ephraim” here, which sounds somewhat like the Heb word meaning “twice fruitful”. The Ephraimites had looked to Baal for the blessing of human fertility, but Yahweh would withhold it in judgment. Ephraim, the doubly fruitful, would become Ephraim, the completely fruitless.

Hos 9:12

EVEN IF THEY REAR CHILDREN, I WILL BEREAVE THEM OF EVERY ONE: “You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them” (Deu 28:41.

Hos 9:13

I HAVE SEEN EPHRAIM, LIKE TYRE, PLANTED IN A PLEASANT PLACE. BUT EPHRAIM WILL BRING OUT THEIR CHILDREN TO THE SLAYER: Yahweh saw that Ephraim had been fertile in the past, comparable to the prosperity of Tyre. Yet in the future Ephraim’s sons were destined to become prey to the enemy.

Hos 9:14

WOMBS THAT MISCARRY AND BREASTS THAT ARE DRY: Ephraim’s hopes concerning descendants and the inability to sustain their children would be disappointed (ct Gen 49:25). This happened when the Assyrians invaded Israel, and again when the Romans invaded. On his way to the cross, Jesus foresaw this when he said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed’ ” (Luk 23:28,29).

Hos 9:15

BECAUSE OF ALL THEIR WICKEDNESS IN GILGAL: What the Israelites did at Gilgal caused the LORD to hate them. At Gilgal the Israelites practiced the pagan fertility cult (Hos 4:15; 12:11). Gilgal was also the site of the Gibeonites’ deception (Josh 9:14), Saul’s coronation (1Sa 11:15–12:25), and his subsequent rejection (1Sa 15:12-34).

I WILL DRIVE THEM OUT OF MY HOUSE: The Land of Israel, the special place where Yahweh dwells (cp 2Ki 17:18,20).

Hos 9:16

THEIR ROOT IS WITHERED: Cp Mal 4:1. Because the people were not ROOTED in the truth (Eph 3:17; Col 2:7), their natural roots would wither. Likewise, the fig tree which did not yield the promised fruit was cursed by Jesus, and was dried up from the ROOT (Mar 11:20).

Hos 9:17

THEY WILL BE WANDERERS AMONG THE NATIONS: “Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other” (Deu 28:64). Because they had wandered from the Lord, they would wander in the earth, like Cain whom the Lord also cursed (Gen 4:12).

Hosea 4

Hos 4:1

“The first three chapters conclude the personal allegory of Hosea. Hos 4-14 are the more literal and detailed application to the nation of Israel — their sins, the judgments to come upon them, and the ultimate reconciliation” (GVG).

THE LORD HAS A CHARGE TO BRING AGAINST YOU: Called “the LORD’s accusation” in Mic 6:2.

NO ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF GOD IN THE LAND: And where there is no “knowledge”, the people will perish (v 6).

Hos 4:2

Instead of these virtues, He observed swearing (cursing others), deception, murder, stealing, adultery, violence, and continual bloodshed. These were things He had forbidden in His covenant. He identified violations of at least five of the Ten Commandments (numbers 3, 9, 6, 8, and 7). Violent crimes were so common that they seemed to follow one another without interruption.

BLOODSHED FOLLOWS BLOODSHED: The progression of these sins will lead to death: cp Psa 1; Jam 1:13; Eccl 8:11; Gen 11:6. Specifically, this may have reference to the contentions about the throne of Israel: Shallum, Menahem, Pekah, Hoshea, etc (2Ki 21:16; 2Ch 24:20-22).

Hos 4:3

“The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish” (Isa 24:4).

Hos 4:4

LET NO MAN BRING A CHARGE, LET NO MAN ACCUSE ANOTHER: Or, better, “and no man brought a charge, no man accused another”. Basic and fundamental indifference to the sins of others. And thus a lax situation grows only worse.

PRIEST: Apparently, even the priests — who should have been the teachers of the Law — were equally guilty with the other Israelites.

Hos 4:5

Priests (v 4), and even the “prophets” (here) likewise have “stumbled”, and fallen into gross sin.

I WILL DESTROY YOUR MOTHER: Mother here = the capital city (cp Gal 4:26), in this case Samaria.

Hos 4:6

MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FROM LACK OF KNOWLEDGE: Because right knowledge is the prerequisite, although it is not the guarantee, of right actions. “Therefore my people will go into exile for lack of understanding” (Isa 5:13).

Hos 4:7

THEY EXCHANGED GLORY FOR SOMETHING DISGRACEFUL: God had blessed the Israelites by increasing their numbers, but their response to this blessing had been to increase their sinning against Him. Consequently He would change their glory, a large population (or perhaps Yahweh Himself), into shame; He would reduce their numbers (and withdraw from them). Cp Rom 1:23, where “exchanging the Glory” sig to worship idols rather than the One True God.

Hos 4:8

THEY FEED ON THE SINS OF MY PEOPLE AND RELISH THEIR WICKEDNESS: Israel’s priests were feeding on the “sin offerings” that the people brought to their pagan shrines. Yet, since these offerings were to idols, it was as though the priests really fed on the people’s sins. The priests desired these offerings, which meant they desired the people to practice idolatry so they would bring more sacrifices.

Or, alternatively, the priests were feeding on the legitimate “sin offerings” which were brought to Yahweh, and so they were happy to encourage the people in their various sins, knowing that this would result in more sin offerings being brought to Yahweh, and thus more bounty being brought to them, the priests!

With this may be compared the practices of the Roman Catholic “priesthood”, which more or less encourages sin — knowing that priestly “indulgences” and “forgiveness” and “blessings” for a sinful laity will bring more and more money into the Church’s coffers!

Hos 4:9

LIKE PEOPLE, LIKE PRIESTS: “It will be the same for priest as for people” (Isa 24:2).

Hos 4:10

THEY WILL EAT BUT NOT HAVE ENOUGH: Those who serve the flesh and its weaknesses and indulgences are never completely satisfied (cp Lev 26:26).

Hos 4:11

WHICH TAKE AWAY THE UNDERSTANDING: The practice of idolatry (spiritual harlotry), with its emphasis on drinking wine, had turned the heart of the Israelites from Yahweh. Along with their heart for God went their realistic understanding of what was best for them, which He had revealed. Thus it may be seen that sin, indulged in over time, is highly deceitful, or deceptive (Jer 17:9) — the conscience is dulled, or seared, and finally one can no longer discern between good and evil (cp also 1Co 6:16). Cp Pro 6:32; 20:1; 23:27-35; Isa 5:12; 28:7; Luke 21:34; Rom 13:11-13.

Hos 4:12

A WOODEN IDOL… A STICK OF WOOD: Contemptuous descriptions of the idols: cp Isa 44:9-20.

Hos 4:13

THEY SACRIFICE ON THE MOUNTAINTOPS AND BURN OFFERINGS OF THE HILLS, UNDER OAK, POPLAR, AND TEREBINTH: They worshipped their idols on the tops of hills and under trees because they enjoyed worshipping at their convenience (cf 2KI 17:10,11). This was as bad as the daughters of the Israelites practicing harlotry and adultery with male cult prostitutes (cf Deu 23:17,18; 1KI 14:24).

WHERE THE SHADE IS PLEASANT: Where the shadows of the thick groves provide a measure of privacy, and protection, to commit their abominable acts. “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed” (John 3:19,20). “This is the way of an adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong’ ” (Pro 30:20).

Cp Amo 7:17: “our wife will become a prostitute.”

Hos 4:14

I WILL NOT PUNISH YOUR DAUGHTERS…: Does this mean that they have grown so vile that no amount of chastening (Heb 12:6-12; Pro 3:11) can have any hope of saving them?

Or, alternatively, I will “not ONLY” punish the women, but I will ALSO punish the men!

Hos 4:15

THOUGH YOU COMMIT ADULTERY, O ISRAEL, LET NOT JUDAH BECOME GUILTY: Though all hope seems to be lost for Israel (the Northern Kingdom), there is still some hope that Judah (the Southern Kingdom) will see her terrible example and be led to repentance and right actions.

GILGAL: Gilgal and Beth-aven were scenes of abominable pagan rites and sacrifices (cf Hos 9:15; 12:11; Amos 4:4; 5:5).

BETH AVEN: Lit, “the house of wickedness”, a name changed by the prophet from “Beth-el”, which means “the house of God”.

Hos 4:16

A STUBBORN HEIFER: Israel worshiped a heifer as though it were their god. But they were, themselves, the “heifer” — stubborn and rebellious.

Hos 4:17

EPHRAIM IS JOINED TO IDOLS; LEAVE HIM ALONE!: Since Ephraim, the largest tribe in the Northern Kingdom that stood for the whole nation, had abandoned her Shepherd for idols, He called others to leave her alone also. He would abandon her to the judgment that would come inevitably from pursuing sin (cp Rom 1:18-32). Ephraim had become incorrigible.

Hos 4:18

EVEN WHEN THEIR DRINKS ARE GONE, THEY CONTINUE THEIR PROSTITUTION: Even when the Israelites were not under the influence of liquor (v 11), they still played the harlot continually.

THEIR RULERS DEARLY LOVE SHAMEFUL WAYS: The rulers of the people, who were to be as shields protecting the general populace, also loved the sins that brought shame on the nation. Cp Mic 7:3: “The ruler demands gifts, the judge accepts bribes, the powerful dictate what they desire — they all conspire together.”

Hos 4:19

A WHIRLWIND WILL SWEEP THEM AWAY: Sym violence, and speed, of their conquerors (cp Psa 18:10).

THEIR SACRIFICES WILL BRING THEM SHAME: They will discover how inadequate their idols really are (Hos 10:6). “You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen” (Isa 1:29).

Hosea 5

Hos 5:1

Hos 5: “This appears in a section dealing with Israel’s intolerable wantonness, and the holiness of Yahweh (Hos 4-7). After Yahweh’s formal charge against Israel (Hos 4), the prophet now bears Yahweh’s indictment against the people and priests of the nation (Hos 5). The Deity will not associate with sin in any sense. Therefore the prophet declares: (1) God withdrew from the adulterous people: vv 1-7. (2) They would be abandoned to their fate: vv 8-14. (3) Yet the door of reconciliation would be left open: v 15. The prophecy is dramatic, for it was delivered to Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II in the north, and the line of four kings of Judah (Hos 1:1), including the faithful Hezekiah. But sin was a festering sore in the nation, waiting for the opportunity to burst forth in its degrading depravity. Yet the mercy of Yahweh waited in the days of Hosea, and would return when they would ‘seek Him early’ (Hos 5:15). This was typically seen in the days of Hezekiah, but will be fulfilled in ‘the third day’ (Hos 6:2)” (GEM).

MIZPAH… TABOR: There was an Israelite Mizpah in Gilead (Jdg 10:17; 11:29), and a mount Tabor which stood in the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel. These were eminent sites for hunting.

Hos 5:2

THE REBELS ARE DEEP IN SLAUGHTER: “They have made deep the pit” (RSV) — as though to trap men!

Hos 5:3

EPHRAIM: Ephraim had played the harlot against her husband, the Lord, and had defiled herself by doing so (cf Lev 18:20,24; Num 5:20,27,28). Ephraim was the largest tribe in Israel and so frequently was a synonym for the Northern Kingdom (eg, Hos 4:17). Hosea may have referred to Ephraim here because this tribe was foremost in idolatry.

Hos 5:4

THEIR DEEDS DO NOT PERMIT THEM TO RETURN TO THEIR GOD. A SPIRIT OF PROSTITUTION IS IN THEIR HEART: The idolatrous practices of the Israelites — together with the accompanying immoralities — had ensnared them so they could not return to their real God. The spirit of a harlot had taken them over; they had become “sin-addicts”. Consequently they did not acknowledge Yahweh.

Hos 5:5

ISRAEL’S ARROGANCE TESTIFIES AGAINST THEM: They sin proudly, openly (cp Isa 3:9).

THE ISRAELITES, EVEN EPHRAIM, STUMBLE IN THEIR SIN: With their proud noses high in the air, they frequently stumbled as they walked: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Pro 16:18).

JUDAH ALSO STUMBLES WITH THEM: We are responsible for others, who may follow our bad example.

Hos 5:6

WHEN THEY GO WITH THEIR FLOCKS AND HERDS TO SEEK THE LORD, THEY WILL NOT FIND HIM; HE HAS WITHDRAWN HIMSELF FROM THEM: The guilty might seek Yahweh, bringing their animal sacrifices to Him, but they would not find Him because He had withdrawn from them. Whereas holiness makes fellowship with God possible, sin and hypocrisy rule it out. He would withdraw His help and blessing from them. He would not accept superficial, or hypocritical worship: Psa 51:17; Jer 29:13; John 4:21,22; 2Ti 3:5.

Cp Mic 3:4: “Then they will cry out to the LORD, but he will not answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them because of the evil they have done.”

Hos 5:7

THEY ARE UNFAITHFUL TO THE LORD; THEY GIVE BIRTH TO ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN: They had dealt treacherously against Yahweh by being unfaithful to their natural and covenant responsibilities to Him. In this they were like an unfaithful wife who had given birth to illegitimate children (as Gomer: see Hos 1:6,8n), the natural result of unfaithfulness. Probably many illegitimate children — the products of unions between Israelites and temple prostitutes — populated the Northern Kingdom.

NOW THEIR NEW MOON FESTIVALS WILL DEVOUR THEM AND THEIR FIELDS: Participation in apostate religious festivals would only hasten their destruction. Prob “new moon” relates to the stargazers and monthly prognosticators that led Israel astray (ie, Isa 47:13).

Perhaps sexually transmitted diseases were also taking their toll on the Israelites.

Furthermore, their lands would experience destruction when enemy invaders overran Israel (this may refer to the Assyrian invaders).

Hos 5:8

SOUND THE TRUMPET: Announcing the coming of an invader (cp Eze 33:1-6). Throughout Israel’s towns the sentries would blow alarms, at the approach of the Assyrian armies.

GIBEAH… RAMAH… BETH AVEN: “”This verse describes an invasion of the territory of Benjamin from the south, i.e., from Judah. The enemy is portrayed as advancing along the main mountain road from Jerusalem through Bethel and thereafter into the heart of Ephraim. Gibeah, only three miles north of Jerusalem, is the first to be attacked; then Ramah, five miles north of Jerusalem; and finally Bethel, eleven miles north of Jerusalem, on the northern border of Benjamin” (Stuart, cited in Const).

Hos 5:9

I PROCLAIM WHAT IS CERTAIN: No longer is this punishment conditional; it has become an absolute guarantee! It would surely happen: cp Lev 26:32-35.

Hos 5:10

JUDAH’S LEADERS ARE LIKE THOSE WHO MOVE BOUNDARY STONES: The removal of property markers, to defraud one’s brethren (Deu 19:14; 27:17; Job 24:2; Pro 22:28; 23:10), symbolizes also the removal of spiritual landmarks and traditions. the leaders of Judah had moved the boundaries between right and wrong, true and false religion, and the true God and idols.

Hos 5:11

INTENT ON PURSUING IDOLS: Ephraim would experience crushing judgment by an enemy invader because he determined to follow false gods rather than divine commands (Deu 4:3; 6:14; 8:19; 28:14,33; Jer 2:5; Mic 6:16). The human command in view is probably Jeroboam I’s institution of calf worship at altars in Bethel and Dan (1Ki 12:27-30).

Hos 5:12

I AM LIKE A MOTH TO EPHRAIM: Yahweh would consume the Northern Kingdom as a moth eats cloth — silently and slowly, but surely (Isa 50:9; 51:8; Job 13:28). The moth is a symbol of destruction of things much larger and stronger than itself (cp Job 4:19; 27:18; Mat 6:19,20; Luk 12:33).

LIKE ROT: Long duration, and inward decay, as in the eating away of a great tree — until it topples, all at once, with a great crash.

Cp Pro 12:4: “A disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.”

Hos 5:13

EPHRAIM TURNED TO ASSYRIA, AND SENT TO THE GREAT KING FOR HELP: Both Israel and Judah appealed to the king of Assyria for help, but he was unable to save them. King Ahab of Judah did this (2Ki 16:5-9), and so did King Menahem of Israel (2Ki 15:19,20) and King Hoshea of Israel (cf 2Ki 17:3). Rather than assisting, the Assyrians attacked both nations.

Hos 5:14

I WILL BE LIKE A LION TO EPHRAIM: In ct the moth and the rot (v 12), the lion’s judgment is swift — destroying and carrying away and devouring in a moment! And it was so: 2Ki 17:6,20.

Hos 5:15

THEN I WILL GO BACK TO MY PLACE UNTIL THEY ADMIT THEIR GUILT: God would withdraw Himself from them, until they repented.

IN THEIR MISERY THEY WILL EARNESTLY SEEK ME: “Earnestly” is “early” in AV. The “early” or “earnest” seeking of Yahweh is discerned in the next chapter. This last statement provides a transition, from the messages of judgment in Hos 4; 5 to the promises of restoration in Hos 6:1-3.

“Losses and adversities are frequently the means which the great Shepherd uses to fetch home His wandering sheep; like fierce dogs they worry the wanderers back to the fold. There is no making lions tame if they are too well fed; they must be brought down from their great strength, and their stomachs must be lowered, and then they will submit to the tamer’s hand; and often have we seen the believer rendered obedient to the Lord’s will by scarcity of bread and hard labour. When rich and increased in goods many believers carry their heads much too loftily, and speak exceeding boastfully. Like David, they flatter themselves, ‘My mountain standeth fast; I shall never be moved.’ When the believer groweth wealthy, is in good repute, hath good health, and a happy family, he too often admits Mr Fleshly Security to feast at his table, and then if he be a true child of God there is a rod preparing for him. Wait awhile, and it may be you will see his substance melt away as a dream. There goes a portion of his estate — how soon the acres change hands. That debt, that dishonoured bill — how fast his losses roll in, where will they end? It is a blessed sign of divine life if — when these embarrassments occur one after another — he begins to be distressed about his backslidings, and betakes himself to his God. Blessed are the waves that wash the mariner upon the rock of salvation! Losses in business are often sanctified to our soul’s enriching. If the chosen soul will not come to the Lord full-handed, it shall come empty. If God, in His grace, findeth no other means of making us honour Him among men, He will cast us into the deep; if we fail to honour Him on the pinnacle of riches, He will bring us into the valley of poverty. Yet faint not, heir of sorrow, when thou art thus rebuked, rather recognize the loving hand which chastens, and say, ‘I will arise, and go unto my Father’ [Luk 15:18]” (CHS).

Hosea 6

Hos 6:1

COME, LET US RETURN TO THE LORD: God’s chief purpose in inflicting punishment is to induce repentance. The first condition for salvation is true repentance (cp prodigal son in Luk 15:18). See, generally, Lam 3:40; Isa 55:6,7.

HE HAS TORN US TO PIECES BUT HE WILL HEAL US: He would heal them (as a shepherd, cf Hos 5:13) even though He had torn and wounded them (as a lion, cf Hos 5:14). They would recognize that their punishment had come from Him, not just from a foreign enemy (Deu 32:39).

Hos 6:2

AFTER TWO DAYS: Two: the number of separation and division. Two periods of scattering: Israel in 721 BC, and Judah in 589 BC. Two thousand years of Israel being scattered — with no national identity, no conscience.

Or, two days = a relatively brief period of judgment.

THE THIRD DAY: Number of solidity, reality; the first cubic (3-dimensional) number (cp 3 kinds of matter). Sig the resurrection of Christ.

WE MAY LIVE IN HIS PRESENCE: A return to the Land of Promise, where God’s presence may be felt. “It is a land the LORD your God cares for; the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end” (Deu 11:12).

Hos 6:3

LET US PRESS ON TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIM: In the Last Days, the Jews will recognize that the Jesus whom they crucified is their Messiah and Lord: Zec 12:10; 13:6.

AS SURELY AS THE SUN RISES, HE WILL APPEAR: Christ is the rising sun of a new day: cp Mal 4:1,2; Psa 19:1-6; Rev 16:12.

HE WILL COME TO US LIKE THE… RAINS: The rain of God’s teaching, to give life: Psa 72:6; Deu 32:2; Isa 55:10.

WINTER RAINS… SPRING RAINS: “Latter and former rains” (KJV). Cp Joel 2:23,24.

Hos 6:4

YOUR LOVE IS LIKE THE MORNING MIST, LIKE THE EARLY DEW THAT DISAPPEARS: Short-lived, disappearing quickly in the hot Palestinian summer mornings. Cp idea: seed sown in shallow soil (Mat 13:19-22), clouds without rain (Pro 25:14; Jud 1:12), wandering stars (Jud 1:13), wadis in the desert (Job 6:15-17).

Hos 6:5

MY JUDGMENTS FLASHED LIKE LIGHTNING UPON YOU: These messages had been as destructive as lightning bolts (cf Amos 4:6-11).

Hos 6:6

Cited Mat 9:13; 12:7. Obedience and mercy are equated with sacrifice: 1Sa 15:22; Psa 50:7-14; Isa 1:10-20. See also: praise and song are equated with sacrifice: Psa 50:13,14r.

Sacrifices were meaningless, even offensive, unless offered out of a heart of love that demonstrated obedience to God’s Word (cf 1Sa 15:22; Isa 1:11-17; Amos 5:21-24; Mic 6:6-8; Pro 21;3; Ecc 5:1).

“God is not setting up mercy and sacrifice as opposites. He is not condemning the offering of sacrifices, but He is exposing their attitude of mind in the offering thereof. Their worship was hollow, without heart. They were, as Malachi so clearly stated, guilty of robbing God whilst in the very act of offering sacrifices to him (Mal 3:7-12). They were going through the motions of seeking forgiveness, for God had given them the blood of animals ‘upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls’ (Lev 17:11), but there was no appreciation of His mercy and consequently no spilling over of that mercy from their own lives. There was no knowledge of God, no fear of His presence; their lives were filled with self.

“This is a searching exhortation: to be exposed to the possibility of incurring condemnation whilst in the act of performing that which was designed to save. Is this not the Old Testament counterpart of, ‘Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body’ (1Co 11:27-29). How important it is, then, that we should have a ‘knowledge’ of God, a knowledge of His redeeming mercy and of His searching truth, and that these should be discerned along with the Lord’s body in the emblems given for that purpose” (THos 47,48).

Hos 6:7

LIKE ADAM, THEY HAVE BROKEN THE COVENANT: Like Adam, the first and typical man in an endless stream of human beings, the Israelites had violated God’s loving directions even though His blessings had been abundant. The covenant that Adam transgressed was not the Mosaic Covenant, which the Israelites and Judahites had violated. It was the arrangement with Adam that God had specified for life within the Garden of Eden, the Adamic Covenant (Gen 2:16,17).

Hos 6:8

GILEAD IS A CITY OF WICKED MEN, STAINED WITH FOOTPRINTS OF BLOOD: The Lord viewed Gilead, the region of Israel east of the Jordan River, as a city. Perhaps He meant that the whole area was similar to a city in which violence and murder were so widespread that one could see bloody footprints in the streets. He may have been referring to a particular city named Gilead (Ramoth-Gilead?) in Gilead where those conditions prevailed (cf Gen 31:47,48; Jdg 10:17). In any case, the point is clear. Evidence of gross violence against one’s neighbors demonstrated lack of love for Yahweh and lack of respect for His covenant.

Hos 6:9

AS MARAUDERS LIE IN AMBUSH FOR A MAN, SO DO BANDS OF PRIESTS; THEY MURDER ON THE ROAD TO SHECHEM: Gangs of priests acted like thugs, who plagued travelers, and extorted “gifts” and other money. Shechem and Ramoth-Gilead were cities of refuge where people could supposedly flee for safety (Jos 20:1,2, 7,8). Shechem stood on the route between Samaria and Bethel, so many pilgrims traveled through Shechem.

It was at Shechem that Levi killed innocent men (Gen 34:25-30; 49:5-7), and now history was repeating itself.

COMMITTING SHAMEFUL CRIMES: The Hebrew word “zimmah” refers to the most abominable sexual sins (eg, Lev 18:17; 19:29; Jdg 20:5,6; Job 31:9-11). Such behavior by priests, who should have been serving the people by leading them to Yahweh, was vile to God.

Hos 6:11

A HARVEST IS APPOINTED: Presumably a “harvest” of judgment: reaping what has been sown (Gal 6:7,8; cp Hos 8:7; ct Hos 10:12). See also Jer 51:33; Joel 3:13; Rev 14:15.

Hosea 3

Hos 3:1

GO, SHOW YOUR LOVE TO YOUR WIFE AGAIN: “We are brought back to the current relationship of both husbands to their wives, and as far as Hosea is concerned the outcome is a happy one. The first verse reveals the profound spirit of love, pity and forgiveness that is so characteristic of God. It made Him send the prophet to do what He Himself had done throughout history: to love and to seek the sinner in order to restore her to favour. It was not an easy task for Hosea, even though it may have been in his heart, because Gomer had destroyed his happiness and ruined his marriage. Nevertheless he obeyed the divine command… There is a consistent divine logic behind this command: I love the sinner, therefore you must love your wife who has sinned; I pity the wayward, hence you must pity your wife who has betrayed you; I forgive the disobedient, so you must forgive your wife who disobeyed the marriage covenant; I am compassionate to the weak, thus you must show compassion to the wife who yielded to temptation. This is the divine way of Life” (JM, Xd 117:6).

THE LORD SAID TO ME, “GO, SHOW YOUR LOVE TO YOUR WIFE AGAIN…”: “Whilst it is easy [and true] to say that Hosea and his relationship with Gomer is a pattern of God’s relationship with wayward Israel we should not forget the suffering of the prophet in all this.

“Hosea had emotion, needs and feelings. If we could put ourselves in the place of Hosea and share his feelings about his wife we would be better able to appreciate the effect that our waywardness has on the Father.

“As a general point, we should not minimise the trauma of events in the lives of God’s servants just because we are able to say they were types. We have an advantage over them when looking at the record. We know the end of the matter and we can read the details in a few minutes, but the actions spoken of can often spread over 50 years or more” (PF).

Daniel 9

Dan 9:1

Dan 9: Daniel’s vision of the 70 sevens: (1) Jeremiah’s prophecy of Jerusalem’s restoration and Daniel’s response (vv 1-3); (2) Daniel’s prayer of confession (vv 4-14); (3) Daniel’s petition for restoration (vv 15-19); (4) God’s response to Daniel’s prayer (vv 20-23); (5) The revelation of Israel’s future in 70 sevens (vv 24-27).

THE FIRST YEAR OF DARIUS: Approx 538 BC, the first year of the rule of Darius (or Cyrus) over the former Babylonian Empire (cp Ezra 1:1). This means that Belshazzar’s feast (Dan 5) occurred between Dan 8 and Dan 9. Daniel’s experience in the lions’ den (Dan 6) happened either shortly before or not long after the events recorded here.

Dan 9:2

THE SCRIPTURES: Daniel’s “Bible” consisted of Jeremiah, of course (vv 15,18), as well as Leviticus (v 7), Deuteronomy (v 4), Psalms (vv 9,16), Isaiah (v 11), and Ezekiel, a contemporary (v 12).

THE DESOLATION OF JERUSALEM WOULD LAST 70 YEARS: The time period was revealed in Jer 36:23,28. This “desolation” had begun 606 BC with the first Babylonian capture of Jerusalem, but the Temple had not been destroyed until 586 BC. Daniel received this current vision about 67 years after Nebuchadnezzar had deported the first group of exiles including himself, in 605 BC. So it looked as though the 70-year period was drawing to an end — within the next few years.

Notice that Daniel interpreted the 70 years of Jeremiah’s prediction as LITERAL years. His understanding of a literal fulfillment of prophetic numbers gives an inspired direction as to how other such prophetic time periods (eg, 42 months; 3 1/2 years; 1,260 days; 1,290 days; and 1,335 days) ought to be interpreted.

See Lesson, 70 years captivity.

Overview: Daniel’s attention was fixed on the period of 70 years which was coming to an end with the recent overthrow of the Babylonian empire. Surely, he must have thought, this would be the beginning of the reestablishment of the Kingdom of God, and perhaps even the time for the appearance of Israel’s Messiah.

But, in response to his prayer, Gabriel speaks not of these 70 years but of 70 “sevens” (vv 24-27). Would Daniel and others think that, when the 70 years were finished, the kingdom would come very quickly, if not immediately? If so, then the answer was a loud “No!” The kingdom would not come after 70 years, but only after (at least!) 490 years. And if 490 years must pass before some of the promises pertaining to the kingdom were fulfilled, then no one should confuse Israel’s soon return to their land with the commencement of the kingdom. (At best, it was only a typical, and very imperfect, fulfillment.)

The timing of the kingdom needed clarification, but so did the nature of the kingdom. The kingdom of God would indeed begin, but not with the return to the land of the people of Israel, nor with the rebuilding of the temple. It would not even begin with the repentance of the nation of Israel. Before the kingdom of God could come to the earth, there must be first a solution to the great human dilemma of sin. This was the subject of the prophecy of vv 24-27. And even that fulfillment (the atoning work of the Messiah), great though it would be, would be merely the “first step” on the road to the true Kingdom of God — which was in fact to be considerably AFTER even the 490 years. All this is implied in Gabriel’s answer to Daniel’s prayer.

No wonder that, as Daniel began to comprehend the great period of time in front of him, before the fulfillment of all his hopes, he experienced distress and depression and agitation.

However, God reminded Daniel that he would miss none of the glories of that Kingdom — even though it would commence long after he died. The very last words of the prophecy of Daniel contain God’s final reassurance to His faithful servant: “As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance” (Dan 12:13). Like a loving father to an eager child, anxious for a special day to come, God speaks to Daniel: ‘Don’t worry. Go to sleep. I’ll wake you up in plenty of time. You won’t miss anything.’

Dan 9:3

SO I TURNED TO THE LORD GOD AND PLEADED WITH HIM IN PRAYER AND PETITION, IN FASTING, AND IN SACKCLOTH AND ASHES: Jeremiah had revealed that God would restore His people to their land when they prayed to Him wholeheartedly (Jer 29:12-14). This revelation prompted Daniel to pray the prayer that follows (vv 3-19). Daniel did not regard prayer as unnecessary in view of the certainty of the prophecy’s fulfillment. He viewed prayer properly as one means that God uses to accomplish His will in human history (cp Dan 6:10). Through prayer we become partners with God in bringing His will to fruition in the world. Daniel’s behavior as well as his words expressed the genuineness of his contrition.

Dan 9:4

I PRAYED TO THE LORD: “Daniel knew by reading the prophecies of Jeremiah that the time of the Jerusalem captivity was about finished. As a result of his knowledge Daniel began a very fervent and heartfelt prayer asking for the forgiveness and restoration of his people. In time, Daniel’s prayer was answered and many Jews returned with Zerrubbabel and Ezra to rebuild the temple and the city of Jerusalem during the reign of Cyrus…

“There is not much time left before Jesus Christ returns. That means that it must be time for us to start praying. We must pray earnestly and fervently with all our hearts for the return of Jesus Christ. It is our time now to confess our sins, to repent and to plead for the restoration of God’s people. It is time to pray for Israel, that God will take away their blindness and restore them. It is time now to pray for God’s will to be done and for the earth to be filled with his glory for ever and ever.

“So let us pray with all our hearts, as Daniel did. May God answer our prayers and send Jesus back to make the earth a new and wonderful place again” (RP).

Dan 9:5

Vv 5-14: in contrast to Yahweh’s faithfulness to Israel, Israel had been unfaithful to Him. The prophet identified with his people. Personally he had been faithful to God. Yet since he was an Israelite he partook of the blessings and curses that God sent Israel for her obedience and disobedience (Deut 28:48-57,64-68).

When the prophets of Israel witnessed against the spiritual abuses among their contemporaries, they did so while still continuing full fellowship with those whom they denounced. More than this, the examples of Moses (Exo 32:30-33), Daniel (Dan 9:5-14), Nehemiah (Neh 1:6,7), Jeremiah (Jer 3:25; 9:1), and Ezra (Ezr 9:6,7,13) show these men intimately associated with the people whom they reprimanded, even so far as confessing the sins of the nation as though they were their own. Here is the spirit of true fellowship, or sharing, by which those most exercised against error bear the burdens of their brethren, and strive with them as partners — not outsiders — to defeat the enervating effects of sin.

Dan 9:15

Vv 15-19: Having laid a foundation for appeal in his confession (vv 4-14), Daniel now proceeded to petition God to restore His people to the Promised Land.

Dan 9:17

FOR YOUR SAKE, O LORD…: As God had righteously brought discipline on Israel for her past sins, Daniel asked Him righteously to bring restoration since He had promised it too. The answer would primarily glorify God and secondarily bless His people.

Dan 9:18

WE DO NOT MAKE REQUESTS OF YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE RIGHTEOUS, BUT BECAUSE OF YOUR GREAT MERCY: Daniel appealed repeatedly for God to hear and answer his prayer, not because the Israelites deserved it but because God is compassionate (cp Exo 32:12,13). It is interesting that Daniel did not tell God what to do. Instead he asked God to hear, to see, and to act. This is a humble approach that does not dictate to God but leaves the answering up to Him.

Dan 9:21

GABRIEL, THE MAN I HAD SEEN IN THE EARLIER VISION: Daniel again saw Gabriel, whom he had met previously (Dan 8:16). He was obviously an angel. The description “the man Gabriel” is a play on words and probably means “the servant, the strong one of the strong God.” The Hebrew word “ish” (man) often appears as a description of a servant (Leupold).

“Note that the term ‘ha ‘is’ (‘the man’) does not signify ‘man’ in contradistinction to angels… in heaven; that would have been ‘adam’ or ‘enos’ in Hebrew. It rather indicates that this mighty archangel had appeared in a humanlike form and had spoken to Daniel intelligibly as one man speaks to another [cf Luke 24:4; Acts 1:10]” (Archer).

ABOUT THE TIME OF THE EVENING SACRIFICE: Jesus kneels in the evening shadows of Gethsemane; there he was “touched” by Gabriel at the time of the evening sacrifice (Dan 9:21; Psa 141:2; Luk 22:43). See the prayer of John 17.

Dan 9:24

SEVENTY ‘SEVENS’: See Lesson, Seventy “sevens”.

Seventy seven-year periods totals 490 years. As Jerusalem was suffering under the hand of Gentiles for 70 years (v 2), so the Jews and Jerusalem would suffer under the hand of Gentiles for 490 years. “Your people” and “your holy city” are obvious references to the Jews and Jerusalem (cf vv 7,11,20). They have nothing to do with the church, which is a distinct entity from Israel (ie, 1Co 10:32). However as the following verses clarify, these will not be uninterrupted years.

God had decreed these years. He had ordained them, and they are as certain to come as anything else that God has foreordained. The purpose for God decreeing this period is six-fold: (1) It will end rebellion (“transgression”) against Him. (2) It will end human failure to obey God (“sin”). (3) It will provide time for atonement that will cover human wickedness. (4) It will inaugurate a new society in which righteousness prevails. (5) It will bring in the fulfillment of the vision that God has for the earth (“vision and prophecy”). (6) It will result in the anointing of the most holy, probably a reference to a new and more glorious “temple” — whether literal or spiritual.

God has already achieved some of these goals, specifically the third one (with the death and resurrection of Christ), and to some extent the first two (through the mediatorial work of the resurrected Christ). However, the other goals have not yet seen fulfillment. Therefore it is reasonable to look for a future fulfillment from our perspective in history. And this will surely be fulfilled in the very near future, with the last great tribulations, leading on the return of Christ to redeem His people Israel.

Dan 9:25

THE ISSUING OF THE DECREE TO RESTORE AND REBUILD JERUSALEM: There are four decrees concerning the rebuilding of Jerusalem that Scripture records: (1) Cyrus’ decree to rebuild the temple in 538 BC (2Ch 36:22,23; Ezra 1:1-4; 6:1-5). (2) Darius I’s decree in 512 BC confirming Cyrus’ earlier one (Ezra 6:1,6-12). (3) Artaxerxes’ decree in 457 BC (Ezra 7:11-26). (4) Artaxerxes’ decree authorizing Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem in 444 BC (Neh 2:1-8). The first two authorized the rebuilding of the temple, and the third provided for animal sacrifices in the temple. The fourth one gave the Jews permission to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, and it seems to be the one in view here. If true, then the date 444 BC marks the beginning of this 490 year period.

UNTIL THE ANOINTED ONE, THE RULER, COMES, THERE WILL BE SEVEN ‘SEVENS’, AND SIXTY-TWO ‘SEVENS’: Seven sevens plus sixty-two sevens equals 483 years. Gabriel predicted that after 483 years [though not necessarily IMMEDIATELY after! — see the “middle” of the “seven” in v 27] Messiah would be cut off.

What happened after 49 years that justifies breaking this period into two parts? Perhaps it was the end of the OT revelation through the writing prophets. Another more probable view is that it took that long to clear out all the debris from Jerusalem and to restore it fully as a thriving and defensible city.

IT WILL BE REBUILT WITH STREETS AND A TRENCH, BUT IN TIMES OF TROUBLE: In fulfillment of the 4th decree, approx 444 BC, the Jews encountered stern opposition — from the Arabs and Samaritans — as they sought to rebuild and refortify their ancient capital.

Dan 9:26

AFTER THE SIXTY-TWO ‘SEVENS’: That is, after (though not necessarily IMMEDIATELY after!) 69 weeks, or 483 years — since the 70 “sevens” are divided into, first, 7 “sevens”, and then, 62 “sevens”.

THE ANOINTED ONE WILL BE CUT OFF AND WILL HAVE NOTHING: Or, “not for himself” — ie, not for his own sins! The sacrifice of the Messiah, for the sins of Israel.

THE PEOPLE OF THE RULER WHO WILL COME WILL DESTROY THE CITY AND THE SANCTUARY. THE END WILL COME LIKE A FLOOD: WAR… DESOLATIONS: The resultant destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, by Titus and the Roman legions (and their Arab auxiliaries).

Dan 9:27

HE WILL CONFIRM A COVENANT WITH MANY FOR ONE ‘SEVEN’: Who is this “he”? If it refers to “the Anointed One” of v 26, then this would signify that, in the “middle of the [70th] seven” — ie, after 3 1/2 years of the final 7 — Jesus would offer the sacrifice that would “confirm” God’s covenant with man. This would “put an end to sacrifice”, because of the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ (cp Heb 10:4,10, etc).

If, however, the “he” refers to “the ruler” of v 26, then this would signify the Roman destruction of the Temple in 70 AD, thus putting an end to sacrifice and offering in a very literal sense.

ON A WING OF THE TEMPLE HE WILL SET UP AN ABOMINATION THAT CAUSES DESOLATION: It does not appear that this could be Christ at all. Assuming it refers to the “ruler” of v 26, then the “abomination”, in the first instance, would be the continuing Roman presence in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount.

Secondly, a continuing “abomination” would be the Dome of the Rock, and the Muslim presence on the Temple Mount to this very day.

Thirdly, a final Last Days “abomination” would be the final, 3 1/2-year “desolation” of Jerusalem by its Arab conquerors, immediately before the return of Christ in glory.

Possibly, some combination of all these three would fit the picture.

UNTIL THE END THAT IS DECREED IS POURED OUT ON HIM [OR IT]: This ought to be the final “end”, involving the Second Coming — which would make the second and third suggestions above the more likely.

Daniel 10

Dan 10:1

Dan 10 — 12: Daniel’s most detailed vision of the future: (1) Daniel’s preparation to receive the vision (Dan 10:1 through Dan 11:1); (2) The near future (Dan 11:2-45); (3) The distant future (Dan 12:1-4); and (4) The end of Israel’s trials (Dan 12:5-13).

THE THIRD YEAR OF CYRUS KING OF PERSIA: The third year of Cyrus’ rule as king over Babylon was 536 BC. Cyrus had issued his decree allowing the Jews to return to their land and to rebuild their temple in 538 BC. Some of them had departed that same year under Zerubbabel’s leadership. They had reinstituted the sacrifices by 537 BC (Ezra 3:6), and by 536 BC they had begun to rebuild the temple (Ezra 3:8). Daniel would have been in his 80s by this time, and his age may account for his not returning to the Promised Land. Daniel remained in government service until the first year of Cyrus (538 BC, Dan 1:21), but he remained in Babylon for several additional years, apparently in retirement.

WHO WAS CALLED BELTESHAZZAR: Perhaps Daniel’s Babylonian name appears again here to assure the reader that this was the same Daniel whom we met in preceding chapters (cf Dan 1:7). He was the Daniel who had unusual skill in understanding visions and dreams (Dan 1:17).

Dan 10:2

I MOURNED FOR THREE WEEKS: And surely during this time he prayed exceedingly as well (cp Dan 9:2-14). Evidently the previous revelations from God and the welfare of the Jews who had returned to Palestine but were encountering opposition were the reasons for Daniel’s grave concern (Ezra 4:1-5,24). Even though many Israelites were returning to Palestine, God had already revealed that they would experience trouble there.

Dan 10:4

THE TWENTY-FOURTH DAY OF THE FIRST MONTH: Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread fell on the fourteenth through the twenty-first days of the first month. The Jews did not observe these festivals in captivity as they had formerly in their own land. Three days after these important memorial days God gave Daniel a vision that he alone saw (cp Dan 12:5).

Dan 10:5

A MAN: Almost certainly an angel. (“Man” is “ish”, as in Dan 9:21; see note there.) The similarities between this man and the one Ezekiel and John saw argue for his being an angel (cp Eze 1:26-28; Rev 1:13-16), as does his message (v 13).

DRESSED IN LINEN: Expensive linen dress is what the priests in Israel wore (Lev 6:10; 16:32; 1Sa 22:18), and it set them off as God’s special servants.

A BELT OF THE FINEST GOLD AROUND HIS WAIST: Likewise, the sash around this angel’s waist, evidently embroidered with the best gold, would also have identified him as a special person.

THE FINEST GOLD: KJV has “fine gold of Uphaz”. Uphaz may be equivalent to Ophir.

Dan 10:6

// Eze 1:14-16; Rev 1:13-16.

CHRYSOLITE: Or “beryl” (AV). Beryl was one of the stones set into the breastpiece of judgment (Exo 28:20). The mysterious “wheels” of Ezekiel’s vision were, in appearance, like beryl (Eze 1:16).

Dan 10:7

Daniel’s companions, sensing that something awesome was happening (cf Acts 9:7; 22:9), hid themselves while Daniel viewed what God showed him.

Dan 10:8

Daniel’s personal reaction to this vision was also similar to John’s (Rev 1:17; cp Dan 8:27).

Dan 10:11

HIGHLY ESTEEMED: The Heb “ish hemudot” literally mean “man of preciousness”. Daniel was precious to God not only because he was one of God’s chosen people but also because God had been precious to him.

Dan 10:12

“This verse constitutes a great encouragement to those whose prayers are not answered immediately. The cause of the delay may be something totally unknown to us; yet although the answer may be delayed, the prayer is always heard immediately” (Feinberg).

Dan 10:13

Evidently the angel who spoke to Daniel had had some duty in Persia that involved the kings or rulers of that land. However, having received a commission from God to visit Daniel he was not able to break away to deliver it because of the work he had to do in Persia. But the angel Michael visited this other angel and helped him accomplish his task, so that could get away to visit Daniel.

“The angels, although immortal sinless servants of God, are limited in their physical and intellectual powers. A great number of Scriptures state or imply these truths: Mat 24:36; 1Pe 1:12; Exo 23:20…; 31:17; Gen 32:24,26; 22:12; 18:21” (WDan).

THE PRINCE OF THE PERSIAN KINGDOM RESISTED ME…: “Men, whose actions the angels have to guide, are allowed the unfettered exercise of their wills, and the angels have to influence them to exercise those wills in a given direction, by regulating the circumstances around them. If you set fire to a house, you cause all its inmates to leave, without interfering with their free wills. It is the exercise of their free wills that leads them to endeavour to escape the fire. So the angels, by disposing circumstances, can influence men to act in a certain way without interfering with their volitions. Such a mode of carrying out the work entrusted to them makes their work a delicate and interesting one, and provides scope for the possibility of that kind of human antagonism which requires careful and persistent arrangement to overcome, as in the case of the Persian emperor, who unwittingly was fighting against an angel in the particular policy he pursued” (WP 230).

Dan 10:14

The angel had come to explain to Daniel what would happen to the Jews in the latter days yet future. Daniel had already received some revelation about what lay ahead for the Jews (Dan 8:23-26; 9:24-27). It was evidently this revelation that puzzled him and led to his requesting clarification in prayer (v 2). What follows in Dan 11:2 — 12:4 (and ESPECIALLY Dan 12!) is more information on this subject. As in Dan 8:23-26 and Dan 9:24-27, so also Dan 11:2 — 12:4 contains information about Israel’s fate relative to Antiochus Epiphanes in the near future, and information about Israel’s fate relative to the tribulations of the distant future, just prior to the Second Coming.

Dan 10:21

THE BOOK OF TRUTH: The “writing of truth” seems to refer to all that God has recorded as truth. This includes Scripture, but it also includes all that is true that God has not revealed. The angel would make part of what God had established as truth known to Daniel. The angel intended this fact to encourage Daniel in view of his having to leave the prophet to return to his other work. Likewise, the fact that Michael stood with this angel in his continuing work would have encouraged Daniel, even though Michael was apparently his only other angelic comrade in this struggle.

This verse may not introduce Dan 11 so much as it does Dan 12: the true “time of the end” prophecy.

YOUR PRINCE: This links Michael with Daniel as a special angel whom God had commissioned to help him and his Jewish brethren (Dan 12:1; cp Rev 12:7; 20:2).

Daniel 12

Dan 12:1

AT THAT TIME MICHAEL, THE GREAT PRINCE WHO PROTECTS YOUR PEOPLE, WILL ARISE: Michael is the angel responsible for overseeing and protecting Israel (Dan 10:13,14,21); he will arise in defense of this nation. The presence of Michael defines the scope and location of this prophecy: plainly, it has to do with Israel and the Land of Israel!

“The Michael who had earlier joined forces with the angel Gabriel (Dan 10:20,21) to ensure a prompt response to Daniel’s pleading, appears in a dramatic scene in the Last Days going into action (behind the scenes, as formerly) on behalf of Israel. The Scriptures which associate him as specially concerned with the Ministry of Israelitish Affairs are few but impressive (Exo 23:20…; Jos 5:14; Zech 3:1 with Jud 1:9; Rev 12:7). The reasons for equating this Michael with the Lord Jesus are quite inadequate, and (in Dan 10:21) would involve a strange concept of personal pre-existence” (WDan).

A TIME OF DISTRESS: “For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now — and never to be equaled again” (Mat 24:21). “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken” (Luk 21:25,26). This distress will most directly affect Israel (cp Deu 4:30; Jer 30:7): the repetition of “your people” in this verse clearly identifies the Jews, not all believers; they will be the focus of intense persecution, and their land will become an international battlefield (cp Mat 24:22 in context). But those who believe will be delivered from their enemies (Zec 12:10; 13:8,9; Rom 11:26).

“This prophecy speaks of a time when the powers of heaven are shaken, so that it needs the strong action of this archangel of God to save His people in their final crisis (1Th 4:16,17). This, it may be fairly safely surmised, will be when the final ‘overturning’ of the nation takes place. It will be ‘a time of trouble such as never was.’ ‘Alas, for that day is great, so that there is none like it — it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it’ (Jer. 30:7). Daniel has the same explicit detail: ‘a time of trouble such as never was since there was a Gentile (goi — in the Land, adds LXX) even to that same time.’ This is surely Zech 13:9; ‘I will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call upon my name, and I will hear them.’ — ‘Thy people shall be delivered, every one that is found written in the book’ (v 1; cp Rev 5:4 and Eur 1:12). So also Joel 2:2,3 and the sad ominous words of Jesus in Mat 24:21” (WDan).

WRITTEN IN THE BOOK: “The idea of a heavenly roll of honour, the Lamb’s Book of Life, is constantly before the mind of the observant reader of Holy Scripture: Exo 32:32; Psa 56:8; 69:28; Isa 4:3; Eze 13:9; Luk 10:20; Phi 4:3; Rev 3:5; 13:8)” (WDan).

Dan 12:2

MULTITUDES: “Many” (KJV), but not all. Only those who are responsible by knowledge. The resurrection will take place after the time periods of Daniel, after the Kingdom of Men is destroyed, in the latter days during a time of trouble: v 1; Hos 13:14; cp Rom 11:15. Jesus claims the resurrection is an OT doctrine: Mat 22:31,32.

MULTITUDES WHO SLEEP… WILL AWAKE: Resurrection as an awakening from sleep: Psa 17:15; Isa 26:19; Job 14:15. Some will sleep a “perpetual” sleep, and now awake: Jer 51:39,40.

IN THE DUST OF THE EARTH: Emphasizing — so there will be no doubt — that this is a physical and literal resurrection, not some spiritual renewal or regeneration.

SOME TO EVERLASTING LIFE: The first instance of this phrase in the Bible.

Dan 12:3

THOSE WHO ARE WISE WILL SHINE LIKE THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE HEAVENS, AND THOSE WHO LEAD MANY TO RIGHTEOUSNESS, LIKE THE STARS FOR EVER AND EVER: Cp Mat 13:43: “Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” Their glory will involve the privilege of reigning with Jesus Christ during his millennial kingdom (Mat 25:14-30; Luke 19:11-27; Rev 5:9,10; 20:4). The reward of the righteous in ETERNITY is directly linked to their faithfulness to the task they were given to fulfill in TIME.

LIKE THE STARS FOR EVER AND EVER: ” ‘As the stars’ perhaps echoes the great Promise to Abraham (Gen 22:17) of an earthly seed ‘as the sand of the seashore,’ and a spiritual seed ‘as the stars of heaven.’ The context here mentions only the latter. Cp also the force of 1Co 15:41,42″ (WDan).

Dan 12:4

CLOSE UP AND SEAL THE WORDS OF THE SCROLL UNTIL THE TIME OF THE END: In conclusion the angel instructed Daniel to close the record of this revelation. In the ANE, people wrote official documents and then, after making a copy for reference, deposited the original in a safe place. The phrase “conceal these words” does not mean that Daniel should keep them to himself but that he should preserve this revelation because it was important (cp Dan 8:26). Also, it was customary for the scribe who recorded important documents such as contractual promises to run his cylinder-seal across the bottom to guarantee authenticity. That is what the angel instructed Daniel to do with this contractual promise. By sealing it, Daniel would certify that what stood written was exactly what God had revealed to him (cp Rev 22:18,19).

Daniel was to preserve this revelation until the end of time because much of what God had revealed to him concerned the far distant future.

There’s a suggestion here that, as we get closer and closer to the “time of the end”, we may expect — individually and/or collectively — to understand better and better the visions that previously have been — in some measure — “sealed up”. It’s like a traveler on a long journey… in the distance he may see a range of mountains, but he sees them as a whole range — the details cannot be discerned. But as he gets closer and closer, each mountain may become more and more differentiated from its neighbor, and features on the mountainsides may become clearer. Closer still, and he may be able to tell even the order of the mountains, ie, which are closest and which are furthest away. He may even discover that he must pass through a valley or two, on the way to the mountains, valleys that he didn’t even know existed when he stood further away.

It may be that, only when the events in question actually happen, will we truly appreciate certain features of the Divine program! Will it be too late then? Why should it be? Although it was the subject of prophecy, and spoken of several times by Jesus himself, the greatest event in history — the resurrection of Jesus Christ — was still not understood by his closest disciples (at least, not nearly in its fullness) until after it happened.

UNTIL THE TIME OF THE END: “A declaration difficult to reconcile with the view that the visions seen by Daniel present a conspectus of continuously unfolding history from Daniel’s time right through to the day of resurrection” (WDan).

MANY WILL GO HERE AND THERE TO INCREASE KNOWLEDGE: “The tendencies to isolate these words, and treat them as a vivid anticipation of the ease and rapidity of modern travel borders on the grotesque” (WDan). Instead, this seems to refer to the Last Days activity of preaching the Truth. To “run” was an idiomatic way of describing how a prophet was to convey the message of God (cp 1Ki 18:46; Jer 23:21; Hab 2:2; Isa 52:7). To “run” was also to search for knowledge (Amo 8:12; Jer 5:1). The eyes of Yahweh, symbolizing the saints, “run” through earth (2Ch 16:9; Zec 4:10). Also, God’s word itself “runs swiftly” (Psa 147:15; 2Th 3:1, NIV mg; cp Psa 19:4; Rom 10:16-18).

“Knowledge shall increase” indicates growth in understanding as a result of hearing the message; this is the reversal of the famine of hearing the prophetic word described in Amos 8:11,12. The context definitely points to Bible preaching and knowledge, and to the carrying of the message to all the earth (Mat 24:14) — not merely to some more generalized global travel and technological growth. This point is confirmed by Dan 12:3 — where the NIV margin reads: “Those who IMPART KNOWLEDGE will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who LEAD MANY TO RIGHTEOUSNESS, like the stars for ever and ever.”

GO YOUR WAY: Cp Mat 28:20: “Go into all the world.”

TILL THE END: “Then shall the end come”, when the Gospel has been preached to all the world (Mat 24:14).

AT THE END OF THE DAYS…: Or, as LXX, “For still there will be days to the end of the world” // “I am with you all the days to the end of the world” (Mat 28:20). Thus connecting the Great Commission, to preach the Gospel, to the Last Days of 3 1/2 years.

Daniel was of course anxious to learn WHEN these things would all transpire — implying that he hoped to see the culmination before he died. But God reminded the elderly Daniel that he would miss none of the glories of that Kingdom — even though it would commence long after he died. The very last words of the prophecy of Daniel contain God’s final reassurance to His faithful servant: “You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance” (Dan 12:13). Like a loving father to an eager child, anxious for a special day to come, God speaks to Daniel: ‘Don’t worry. Go to sleep. I’ll wake you up in plenty of time. You won’t miss anything.’

Hosea Overview

The name Hosea means, in Heb, “Yah is help” or “Salvation”. He was contemporary with the more famous Isaiah, whose name is very similar. The name finds an echo in Hos 13:4: “I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt; you know no God but me, and besides me there is no SAVIOR.”

Theme

The most prominent symbolism in Hosea’s prophecy is the marriage relationship as a parable of God’s relationship with His covenant people; this reflects an aspect of the help God gives to His people. Because of her unfaithfulness, God had “divorced” Israel; He had previously regarded her as His wife, but He now repudiates her. The prophets repeatedly refer to this symbolic relationship between Israel and God (Jer 3:8,20; Isa 50:1; Eze 16:32,38; cp also Eph 5:23; Rev 17:4,5; 19:7; 21:9), but nowhere else than in Hosea is it acted out so dramatically.

God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, and even the hundredth straying lamb is carefully searched out. The children of Israel are the seed of Abraham; therefore they are the kernel of God’s purpose and “the apple of His eye”, so that despite their rebelliousness and faithlessness He continues to watch over them, and will never make a full end of them. He says to Hosea, “Go again, love a woman who is beloved of a paramour and is an adulteress; even as the LORD loves the people of Israel, though they turn to other gods” (Hos 3:1). The displeasure which God feels at Israel’s sin in departing from her Master to worship Baal takes the form of a loving husband’s feelings toward a grossly adulterous wife: feelings which are perhaps at once the most mixed, and the most harrowing, which it is possible for a man to experience. How strong must have been His yearning desire to go forth and accept the least sign of repentance on her part. Yet at the same time, how intense His feelings of loathing toward her abominations!

In the naming of Gomer’s children (of which some seem not to have been fathered by Hosea) there is found this mingled compassion and loathing: The second child was named “Lo-ruhamah”, which means “without compassion”, or “without pity” (Hos 1:6,7).

God contrasts His great compassion toward the Southern Kingdom of Judah with His lack of compassion toward the Northern Kingdom of Israel. And so God allows the overthrow of Israel by the kings of Assyria, but He saves Jerusalem and Judah from the same Gentile power by a miraculous destruction of Sennacherib’s great army. The third child was “Lo-ammi”, which means “not my people” (v 8)… “for you are not my people, and I am not your God” (v 9).

Yet, because of His own covenants of promise to Abraham, God cannot allow this to be the permanent condition of His people Israel. The apostle Paul takes up these words from Hosea in Rom 9:25,26. Paul points out that the breaking off of Israelite branches has made room for the grafting of the Gentiles into the true olive tree, and then also speaks of God grafting natural Israel back in again. And he speaks of those who previously had not obtained the mercy of God, at last obtaining His mercy again (Rom 11, esp vv 30,31).

In the purpose of God concerning a final restoration of Israel, a reunited kingdom is envisioned, so that as the northern kingdom has no future separate existence, only the return of Judah from captivity is referred to. In Hosea’s day the faithful ones in Israel went over to support the kingdom of Judah (Hos 6:1; 2Ch 11:13,16,17; cp Eze 37:16-20). To indicate the Messianic application in the future, the meaning of the names are reversed; the negative (“Lo-“) is removed from “Ruhamah” and “Ammi” (Hos 1:10,11) — so that the names now signify “MY compassion” and “MY people”. After continuing “many days without a king” and all the things that make for a divine nation (Hos 3:4), Israel will finally “return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and they shall come in fear to the LORD and to his goodness in the latter days” (v 5). (Here is indicated a Last Days application of the prophetic parable.)

“They shall go after the LORD, he will roar like a lion; yea, he will roar, and his sons shall come trembling from the west; they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the LORD” (Hos 11:10,11).

“Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from Death? O Death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your destruction?” (Hos 13:14).

“They shall return and dwell beneath my shadow, they shall flourish as a garden; they shall blossom as the vine, their fragrance shall be like the wine of Lebanon” (Hos 14:7).

Throughout the book of Hosea Israel and Judah are accused of relying upon Egypt, Assyria, and their own fenced cities, and of worshiping idols and the calves of Samaria. These evils brought appropriate recompense upon them. In the meantime, therefore, captivity in Egypt and Assyria will be their lot, and their king will be dethroned (Hos 7:11; 8:14; 13:1,2; 9:3,6; 10:3).

Israel having ignored the word of God revealed in His commandments, their faithfulness is described as “whoredom”, or “adultery” (Hos 1:2; 4:2,10-14; 5:3,4; 6:10; 7:4; 8:1; 9:11-14; 13:13). Yet, in spite of all, God would reinstate them (Hos 11:8-11). As he originally called Israel out of Egypt, so He would do so again. They would return from their false worship to the recognition of the one true God whom their fathers had worshiped.

What happened in a limited sense in OT times (with the return of Israel from Babylon to their land under the leadership of Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel, Haggai, and Zechariah) will happen once again in the Last Days. Indeed, it has begun to happen already, with the return of millions of Jews from Europe (and now from the former USSR); but this return is only a preliminary — for there is no real acknowledgment of the hand of God in modern Israel’s affairs.

However, this state of affairs can change rapidly, when the children of Israel realize that they can no longer rely on their peace treaties with surrounding nations (like Egypt), nor the support of their former ally the United States, nor even their own military might. Age-old enemies will finally find the means to defeat them in battle. Then, like an adulterous wife who knows at last that there is neither comfort nor security in the arms of another, Israel will turn back to her God. “And I will have pity on Not pitied, and I will say to Not my people, ‘You are my people’; and he shall say ‘Thou art my God’ ” (Hos 2:23). The history of Israel, a pattern for the future?

“Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the LORD are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them” (Hos 14:9).

Hosea 1

Hos 1:1

See Lesson, Minor prophets, and their messages.

See Lesson, Prophet, the.

“Hosea’s period of ministry was about forty years — the last forty years of the northern ten-tribed Kingdom of Israel, just as Jeremiah prophesied during the last, sad forty years of the Kingdom of Judah.

“Hosea began his prophecy in a time of prosperity for Israel. The land had been in great distress before Jeroboam began his reign, but God in His pity for the sad condition of Israel, even though they were wicked, greatly strengthened and helped Jeroboam and enabled him to recover Israel’s lost territory and defeat her enemies and even extend his rule over Syria to the north.

“It was one more opportunity for Israel to recognize and appreciate God’s goodness and love, and the wisdom of drawing nigh unto Him in faithfulness. But Israel did not respond. Because of their apparent strength and stability, they could not believe the end was so near. In spite of God’s help, they and their king intensified their wickedness and idolatry. God often blesses, as a last invitation to repentance and reform, before pouring out His judgments on sin.

“Such was the background of Hosea’s prophecy, as the powerful but evil reign of Jeroboam II drew to its close. Israel did not realize it, but this reign was to mark the end of any real security or stability for the nation. In the remaining twenty-five years of the Kingdom, six kings were to rise and fall, and the dark shadow of Assyria, to whom they had first turned as an ally, was to grow swiftly and terribly until it completely destroyed and blotted out their nation, and carried them away” (GVG).

HOSEA: Another form of Joshua/Jesus: sig “the salvation of Yahweh”.

Hos 1:2

GO, TAKE TO YOURSELF AN ADULTEROUS WIFE…: “For us, so many centuries later, not the least of its {Hosea’s] values is its astonishing revelation of the tender love of God towards those who are His, His yearning desire that they ‘might not perish’ but might turn unto Him and be saved. This love is expressed in Hosea with such earnestness, that if we had not had this sanction of the word of the prophet himself, we might well not have dared to presume that it could be so great. In the light of Hosea we may enter a little better into the convictions of the apostle Paul that nothing, literally nothing, can ‘separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord’ [Rom 8:38,39]” (FP, Xd 113:99).

AN ADULTEROUS WIFE: Not that Gomer was necessary an immoral woman, or a prostitute, BEFORE her marriage. But rather that she turned out to be so later. (Consider that v 2 also speaks as though the “children of unfaithfulness” were already there — when of course they were not born as yet!: vv 3,6,8.)

The Hosea story is all about redemption. But the whole of the OT is about redemption: Israel was a slave in Egypt, and a “harlot” and an “idolator”… but she was redeemed (ie, bought out of slavery) by the blood of the Passover lamb. And we can surely see ourselves, as you say, in Gomer: we are all “slaves” to sin, and we are unfaithful in our allegiance to the world, and worshipers of many false “gods” — yet we have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, the Passover Lamb, which is priceless beyond our feeble words to describe.

The question is: do WE really see ourselves in Gomer? And what does that say about us?

AN ADULTEROUS WIFE: ” ‘A wife of harlotries.’ The noun means ‘prostitute; harlot’ (HAL 1:275). The term does not refer to mere adultery which is expressed by a different root (HAL 2:658). The plural noun (lit ‘harlotries’) is an example of the plural of character or plural of repeated behavior. The phrase ‘wife of harlotries’ prob refers to a prostitute, poss a temple prostitute serving at a Baal temple” (NET notes).

Gomer was possibly a Gentile, and a prostitute at a pagan temple.

Cp God taking Israel to wife, as described in Exo 34:15; Deu 31:16; Jdg 2:17; Isa 54:4-6; Jer 3:14; 31:32; Eze 16:17; 23:5; Rev 17:1,2.

THE VILEST ADULTERY: “Israel was guilty of gross spiritual prostitution by apostatizing away from Yahweh. The verb is used in a concrete sense to refer to a spouse being unfaithful in a marriage relationship (HAL 1:275.1), and figuratively ‘to be unfaithful’ in a relationship with God by prostituting themselves with other gods and worshiping idols” (Exo 34:15; Lev 17:7; 20:5,6; Deu 31:16; Jdg 8:27,33; 21:17; 1Ch 5:25; Ezek 6:9; 20:30; 23:30; Hos 4:15; Psa 106:39) (HAL 1:275.2)” (NET notes).

Hos 1:3

Vv 3-9: “Following God’s instruction, Hosea married an adulterous wife and was given three children by her. Each of his children were named by God and their names were designed to be parables of the state and future of the nation of Israel. The message of Jezreel was that Israel would soon be punished and destroyed. The message of Lo-Ruhama was that Israel was no longer loved or forgiven by God. And the message of Lo-Ammi’s name was that God disowned his people: ‘You are not my people and I am not your God.’

“God through Hosea had given three devastating prophecies that were fulfilled not long after they were given. However, in God’s destruction of Israel He still remembered his promises to Abraham and David; still, in His warnings, He gave the hope of redemption. He did not leave Israel totally without hope despite their desperate situation. He told them that they would again be His people and be a numerous as the sand on the seashore.

“In the same way He has offered hope to every sinner that turns to Him. In the midst of the wages of sin, death, there is always the hope of the gift of God — eternal life, if we turn to God. Turn to Him today!” (RP).

BORE HIM A SON: Notice the “him” here: in contrast, Gomer has two other children, but the “him” is absent: suggesting the last two children (vv 6,8) were not fathered by her husband.

Hos 1:4

“Hosea’s message sheds much light on the relationship between God’s love for His people and their necessary chastening and disciplining.

“While it manifests the great beauty and the transforming, appealing power of His infinite patience and affection, it clearly speaks in the strongest terms of the sorrows and bitternesses and hardships that must inevitably arise from disobedience and wickedness.

“Its basic message is the great tragedy of Israel’s blindness and unnecessary, self-caused miseries in the face of God’s choice of them as the special recipients of His love — a choice not as a matter of respect of persons, but as a witness and example to all the world of the beauties of His character and the glories of His purpose.

“Even in judgment, its tone is sorrow rather than anger, and the severest condemnations always look forward to eventual reconciliation.

“The book of Hosea contains many deep lessons on the subject of marriage and divorce — deep spiritual principles of patience and kindness and hope, and faithfulness, and a love that bears and endures all things, and never fails” (GVG).

I WILL PUNISH THE HOUSE OF JEHU FOR THE MASSACRE AT JEZREEL: “Jezreel is one of the fortresses commanding the valley of Megiddo, or Esdraelon. It is on the slopes of Mt Gilboa, where Saul died, and it controls the gateway between the mountains down to the Jordan valley, the main entrance to Israel from the east. This is Israel’s historic battleground, right back to the days of Gideon.

“The ‘blood of Jezreel’ that was soon to be avenged began with the treacherous murder of the faithful Naboth by Jezebel (1Ki 21; cp 2Ki 9:7). Jehu was raised up to destroy the house of Ahab for this wickedness, which he did at Jezreel, but because of his own subsequent wickedness and following in the ways of Ahab, all the bloodshed associated with Jezreel is held against him and his house, including his killing of Ahab’s family.

“Jehu had boasted, ‘Come and see my zeal for the Lord.’ He manifested a great zeal for vengeance and destruction, and condemnation of others, but such a zeal — if it is not accompanied by righteousness and gentleness and mercy and tenderness toward the weaknesses of others — is merely an ugly, hypocritical, Pharisaical manifestation of the evil of the flesh.

“Jezreel (cp Hos 2:22) has a double meaning, which comprehends both Israel’s judgment and her redemption. Basically it means, ‘God will sow.’ It is the name of God combined with the root word related to seed, planting, and conception — both animal and vegetable. It also comprehends the meaning of the ‘seed or offspring of God’ — the Fatherhood of God — the family relationship. ‘We also are His offspring,’ as Paul told the Athenians — both naturally, and also potentially in a spiritual sense, as John expresses it — ‘Beloved, now are we the sons of God.’

“Jezreel also means ‘God will scatter’ — as seed is scattered, but with the idea of an eventual reaping and gathering — ‘He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd doth his flock’ (Jer 31:10)” (GVG).

Hos 1:6

Vv 6-9: “And so the basis of the allegory is laid in Hosea’s wife and three children. The three names represent three successively increasing stages of divine abandonment — Jezreel, Lo- Ruhamah, Lo-Ammi — Scattered, Unloved, Rejected” (GVG).

LO-RUHAMAH: “Not loved”. Ct with Peter’s words: “Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy” (1Pe 2:10). “LORD Almighty, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah, which you have been angry with these seventy years?” (Zech 1:12).

AND GAVE BIRTH: Ct v 3n.

Hos 1:7

YET I WILL SHOW LOVE TO THE HOUSE OF JUDAH: Judah will be spared as an independent kingdom even after Israel is destroyed.

I WILL SAVE THEM — NOT BY BOW, SWORD OR BATTLE, OR BY HORSES AND HORSEMEN, BUT BY THE LORD THEIR GOD: The defeat of Sennacherib’s invading force (2Ki 19:35). (Cp other examples: Gideon in Jdg 7; Deborah and Barak in Jdg 4.)

Hos 1:8

GOMER HAD ANOTHER SON: Ct v 3n. Gomer seems to revert to her previous life as a prostitute. “Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of my creditors did I sell you? Because of your sins you were sold; because of your transgressions your mother was sent away” (Isa 50:1).

Hos 1:9

LO-AMMI: “Not my people”. Ct with Peter’s words again: “Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God” (1Pe 2:10).

Hos 1:10

LIKE THE SAND ON THE SEASHORE: Gen 13:16; 32:12; Isa 48:19; Rom 9:27,28.

Hos 1:11

REUNITED… ONE LEADER: Subsequent returns to the Land, under Zerubbabel, then Ezra, and then Nehemiah. But, of course, the last great Return of the End Times, under Christ: Eze 37:21-28; Zec 14:8,9; 12:6-10. God scattered Israel among the nations, but in the Last Days He will reap an increase (Jer 31:10), under Jesus Christ, the true “Jezreel” (Seed of God).
